18 Excellent people: Excellent science CSIR chief researcher Prof Suprakas Sinha Ray will receive the prestigious Morand Lambla Award from the International Polymer Processing Society in America in July - Most prestigious award in the field of polymer processing One of most highly cited authors (>7900 times), rated one of the world s top 50 high impact chemists (Feb 2011) 2 single author and 3 edited books, 140 articles in international journals and holder of several patents Articles in most prestigious chemistry journal - Accounts in Chemical Research 18

19 Excellent people: Excellent science Dr Belinda Reyers Biodiversity Fellow of the Zoological Society of London; associate professor at Stellenbosch University; editor of several international journals. Supervised more than 10 Master s and PhDs. Work in Eden Municipality internationally acclaimed. 19 Dr Makobetsa Khati Biosciences Supervised 6 PhD and 4 MSc students in last five years. Five presentations by students won best presentation awards at conferences. Dr Angela Dudley Laser technology Emerging scientist with nine awards from national and international bodies. Invited to spend time in top overseas laboratories.

20 Excellent people: Excellent science Dr James Maina Transport infrastructure engineering Uses mathematical modelling in building of roads and runways. Developed software to determine road stress; used locally and in Japan. 20 Dr Kenneth Ozoemena Materials science He has 95 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited more than 1700 times. An associate professor at the Universities of Pretoria and Western Cape. Guest professor at universities in Japan, Belgium and the UK. Darryl Naidoo Laser technology Emerging scientist with MSc in Physics summa cum laude. Four national awards, leading CSIR experiments in laser resonator research.

69 Massive roll-out of CSIR invention: Mouthpiece licensed to Afrox The CSIR patented rubber mouthpiece is a component used in self-contained selfrescue breathing apparatus Used by underground mine workers during emergencies for oxygen supply Prescribed by Mine Health and Safety regulations for coal mines (and best practice in hard rock mines) Old mouthpiece caused irritation that could block flow of air and make talking impossible The CSIR granted Afrox a licence to manufacture and distribute Licensing resulted in a supplier of safety products to SA mines placing a R70m order on Afrox Product includes two CSIR inventions: mouthpiece and noseclip.
