2 12 th European Workshop on Advanced Control and Diagnosis The 12th European Workshop on Advanced Control and Diagnosis (ACD 2015) took place at the Research Centre NTIS - New Technologies for the Information Society, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic, on November 19 20, The annual European Workshop on Advanced Control and Diagnosis has been organized since 2003 by Control Engineering departments of several European universities in Germany, France, the UK, Poland, Italy, Hungary, and Denmark to bring together senior and junior academics and engineers from diverse fields of automatic control, fault detection, and signal processing. The workshop provides an opportunity for researchers and developers to present their recent theoretical developments, practical applications, or even open problems. It also offers a great opportunity for industrial partners to express their needs and priorities and to review the current activities in the fields. A total of 74 papers have been submitted for ACD Based on the peer reviews 48 papers were accepted for the oral presentation and 10 papers for the poster presentation. The accepted papers covered areas of control theory and applications, identification, estimation, signal processing, and fault detection. In addition, four excellent plenary lectures were delivered by Prof. Fredrik Gustafsson (Automotive Sensor Mining for Tire Pressure Monitoring), Prof. Vladimír Havlena (Advanced Process Control for Energy Efficiency), Prof. Silvio Simani (Advanced Issues on Wind Turbine Modelling and Control), and Prof. Robert Babuška (Learning Control in Robotics). The ACD 2015 was for the first time in the workshop history co-sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). On behalf of the ACD 2015 organising committee, we would like to thank all those who prepared and submitted papers, participated in the peer review process, supported, and attended the workshop. 5 Plenary Lectures Fredrik Gustafsson (Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden) Title: Automotive Sensor Mining for Tire Pressure Monitoring Abstract: The wheel speed sensor provides a rich source of information for monitoring the state of the car, in particular the driveline, as well as the road condition. The presentation gives examples of how wheel speed and other on-board sensors can be used to detect and grade different faults in the car, as well as changes in the road surface. Particular attention is given to a tire pressure monitoring system, today deployed in more than 10 million cars, that is based on extensive sensor fusion and diagnosis algorithms. Biography: Fredrik Gustafsson is professor in Sensor Informatics at Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University. His research interests are in stochastic signal processing, adaptive filtering and change detection, with applications to communication, vehicular, airborne, and audio systems. He is a co-founder of the companies NIRA Dynamics (automotive safety systems), Softube (audio effects) and SenionLab (indoor positioning systems). He was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions of Signal Processing , IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems , and EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing He was awarded the Arnberg prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science (KVA) 2004, elected member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) 2007, and elevated to IEEE Fellow He is the author of the Wiley textbook Adaptive Filtering and Change Detection. He was awarded the Harry Rowe Mimno Award 2011 for the tutorial "Particle Filter Theory and Practice with Positioning Applications", which was published in the AESS Magazine in July 2010, and was co-author of "Smoothed state estimates under abrupt changes using sum-of-norms regularization" that received the Automatica paper prize in

6 Vladimír Havlena (Honeywell ACS Global Laboratory Prague, Czech Republic) Title: Advanced Process Control for Energy Efficiency Abstract: Improved energy efficiency is a global trend and a motivation for many advanced process control and optimization projects. In energy intensive process industries, energy creates up to 70% of production costs. Application of standard advanced control packages may not cover all aspects of the problem. More holistic approach spanning better responsiveness of the plant to the varying demands, adaptation to process ageing and varying economic environment like real-time electricity/gas pricing, and environmental constraints, requires further development of advanced process control and real time optimization technology. The talk will cover the state-of-the-art of advanced process control technology as well as several application examples from processing industries. Biography: Prof. Vladimir Havlena graduated from the Faculty of electrical engineering of the Czech Technical University of Prague, in He spent over 30 years in academic and research positions in control theory and process control applications. Currently, he is a professor at the Faculty of electrical engineering, CTU, lecturing Estimation, filtering and detection MSc course and supervising a number of PhD students, and also a Senior Fellow and Technology manager of Process Control and Optimization group in Honeywell ACS Global laboratory in Prague. His areas of interest cover model predictive control, real time optimization, system identification, Kalman filtering and inferential sensing. 5

7 Silvio Simani (Department of Engineering, University of Ferrara, Italy) Title: Advanced Issues on Wind Turbine Modelling and Control Abstract: The motivation for this talk comes from a real need to have an overview about the challenges of modelling and control for very demanding systems, such as wind turbine systems, which require reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety over power conversion efficiency. These issues have begun to stimulate research and development in the wide control community particularly for these installations that need a high degree of sustainability. Note that this topic represents a key point for offshore wind turbines, since they are characterised by expensive and/or safety critical maintenance work. In this case, a clear conflict exists between ensuring a high degree of availability and reducing maintenance times, which affect the final energy cost. On the other hand, wind turbines have highly nonlinear dynamics, with a stochastic and uncontrollable driving force as input in the form of wind speed, thus representing an interesting challenge also from the modelling point of view. Suitable control methods can provide a sustainable optimisation of the energy conversion efficiency over wider than normally expected working conditions. Moreover, a proper mathematical description of the wind turbine system should be able to capture the complete behaviour of the process under monitoring, thus providing an important impact on the control design itself. In this way, the control scheme could guarantee prescribed performance, whilst also giving a degree of tolerance to possible deviation of characteristic properties or system parameters from standard conditions, if properly included in the wind turbine model itself. The most important developments in advanced controllers for wind turbines are addressed, and open problems in the areas of modelling of wind turbines are also outlined. Biography: Silvio Simani received the Laurea degree (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering in 1996, and the Ph.D. in Information Science (Automatic Control) in Since 2006 Dr. Simani has been an IEEE Senior Member, and from 2000 a member of the SAFEPROCESS Technical Committee. Since 2002 Dr. Simani has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering of the University of Ferrara. Dr. Simani s research interests include fault diagnosis, fault tolerant control, and system identification, on which he published about 160 refereed journal and conference papers, as well as three books and chapters. In 2010 Dr. Simani was the general chair of the 1st EACD European Workshop on Advanced Control and Diagnosis held in Ferrara. Since 2009, Dr. Simani has been member of the SysTol and EACD Steering Committees, as well as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Sciences. 6

8 Robert Babuška (DCSC, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands) Title: Learning Control in Robotics Abstract: Developments in robotics are coming at an accelerated rate and robots are quickly being adopted for tasks in unstructured environments. In such settings, there is a need for effective learning control methods that can deal with the uncertainty in the robot s environment, handle new situations and perform robustly under changing conditions. In addition, learning is essential for effective interaction with humans, so that robots can be trained by means of demonstration, become more responsive and cooperative with humans. There is a variety of learning control approaches, ranging from the acquisition of initial skills via teaching by a human, through transfer learning methods that enable the reuse of previously learned skills and behaviors, to learning from experience, which aims at continual improvement of performance. The talk will focus on the last category of methods, addressing mainly techniques based on reinforcement learning, which is a form of datadriven optimal control. We will cover sample-efficient algorithms suitable for real-time learning in continuous state and action spaces and show examples of applications in robot motion control. We will also address recently introduced learning methods based on deep neural networks and discuss their potential for robot control. Biography: Robert Babuška received the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) in control engineering from the Czech Technical University in Prague, in 1990, and the Ph.D. degree (cum laude) from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, in He has had faculty appointments at Czech Technical University Prague and at the Delft University of Technology. Currently, he is a Professor of Intelligent Control and Robotics and the scientific director of the TU Delft Robotics Institute. His research interests include reinforcement learning, neural and fuzzy systems, identification and state-estimation, nonlinear model-based and adaptive control and dynamic multi-agent systems. He has been working on applications of these techniques in the fields of robotics, mechatronics, and aerospace. 7
