For this reason, it is vital that the public has a better understanding of research and takes a full and active role in debating the direction of scientific progress. Society needs greater knowledge of research results and processes, and of the methods used to communicate these findings. Researchers also need knowledge from society. The questions people ask, their interests and concerns give researchers insights into what is important to the public, and how society as a whole views their work.
