We make Artificial Intelligence tangible for you. The German edition of the MIT Technology Review has been reporting on new developments in this field for years. In 2013 we have already launched the question: Computers do the work, what do we do? Now at our Innovators Summit AI, we bring together relevant experts from business and science to explore the real potential of this new technology in comprehensive lectures, real case studies and inspiring workshops. We believe that AI will change almost every business field - from automotive industry to medical industry to logistics. But we also know that their true potential is still overestimated while underestimated at the same time. Overrated because technology is reaching its limits. Underestimated, because the existing AI systems already mean major changes for individual companies and whole industries.the key questions are: Where is technology moving to? What about the relevant business model? How far is the competition? Good answers seem rare. For this reason, the Technology Review editorial team has launched the Innovators Summit AI. THE INNOVATORS SUMMIT AI OFFERS Overview and outlook: Top-class scientists present the current state of AI research, explain the important technologies in the field of artificial intelligence including their advantages and disadvantages and answer the question: For which application is which technology suitable? Which further developments are to be expected where? Applications and business models: With AlphaGo s victory over the world s best Go player at the latest, it is clear what potential Artificial Intelligence theoretically has. However, it is much less clear which applications result from this. In concrete case studies, startups and established companies explain how to use AI profitably, what implementation means for an organization, where the pitfalls and opportunities are waiting. Cross-innovation and inspiration: Learn from other industries. Because with artificial intelligence in particular, the similarities between the different markets are greater than the differences. The combination of lectures and workshops gives you excellent opportunities to network and exchange ideas.
THE PARTICIPANTS CAN EXPECT Openness: Discuss your challenges, solution ideas and strategic considerations with like-minded people and experts of your professional level. So they come up with ideas and approaches that will help you. Commitment: We bring together people who care about Artificial Intelligence, working with great energy on applications for tomorrow. Professional moderators lead the workshops and lead the discussions to a meaningful result. Target Audience Strategy decision-makers from all industries, especially from the C-level sector (CEOs, CTOs, CIOs) business development managers innovation managers, start-up founders scientists venture capitalists, human resource managers, managing directors, entrepreneurs Expected participants 150 VENUE smartvillage Ganghoferstraße 66b Munich
PROGRAM Day 1 (20 November 2018) Session 1: From Natural to Artificial Intelligence 9:00 am Registration 10:00 am Keynote speech The future of AI in Europe: How Artificial Intelligence changes the economic landscape and how Europe can keep up with the US and China // Prof. Dr. Antonio Krüger, Scientific Director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence GmbH (DFKI) 10:20 am Talk Advancing AI: What current brain research teaches us // Prof. Dr. Moritz Helmstaedter, Managing Director, Max Planck Institute for Brain Research Current machine learning techniques like Deep Learning are based on brain research done in the 60ies of the last century. Now, new research is well on the way to bringing AI to the next level. Especially revealing the connectome, how brain cells are connected to each other, will bring fundamental new insights. Moritz Helmstaedter is at the forefront of this research and will talk about the road to a much more human like AI. 10:50 am Coffee break Session 2: From Analytics to automated Decisions 11:10 am Talk Are AI systems ready for automated decisions? // Prof.Damian Borth, Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning, University of St.Gallen (HSG) Computers can easily be misled into making mistakes: They recognize gibbons in pictures showing a panda, or they classify a turtle as a gun. Researchers succeed in doing this by inserting tiny changes into the images that are invisible to the human eye - so-called adversarial attacks. What is with panda s gimmick can become deadly serious in autonomous driving. Moreover, these errors are by no means limited to image recognition. They can occur in almost any machine learning application, from production data analysis to speech recognition. This can turn automatically made decisions into serious misconclusions. The lecture shows how today s AI systems make decisions, which problems arise from them - and how they can be avoided. 11:30 am Case studies Automated decision systems Decision making in Health care: Towards an AI-enhanced system // Peter Gocke, Chief Digital Officer, University Hospital Charité Nearly nowhere has the adoption of AI been more slowly than in the health care sector. The reasons are a complex human body, and a system nearly as complex, with multiple stakeholders and fragmented responsibilities. Nevertheless, Charité, one of the biggest university hospitals in europe, is moving forward. In 10 years time, 80 percent of all medical decisions shall be AI-enabled. An algorithm to predict kidney failure is already in place. Peter Gocke, a radiologist by training, will tell what comes next, how this transformation can happen in a diverse and complex organisation - and what prospect it holds.
PROGRAM 12:30 pm Lunch break Overcoming the savant-syndrome // Tom Krause, CTO of Cargonexx Logistics are a paramount field to be disrupted by AI: Around 25 percent of all trucks on european roads are empty because of complicated matchmaking and difficult route planning. Automation could increase efficiency dramatically. But there is no single AI technology good enough to solve the problem. So Cargonexx combines different methods, among them machine learning and rule based systems. The startup currently connects 5000 truckage companies with trucks under management, and its approach allows it to come up with guaranteed price and availiability within seconds after an order was placed. Tom Krause, CTO of Cargonexx and formerly Director of Logistic at Delivery Hero will explain how hybrid AI is working. Session 3: From Man to Machine 2:00 pm Talk The bridge between natural and artificial intelligence // Prof. Sami Haddadin, founding Director of the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence, founder Franka Emika GmbH, winner of the German Future Prize 2017 Man and machine are moving closer together than ever before, artificial and natural intelligence are increasingly forming a system. Examples range from soft robotics in industrial production to chat bots, automated decisions and autonomous cars. The great danger is therefore not the fight between man and machine - but that of man and machine. Poorly thought-out interfaces between artificial and natural intelligence can lead in the harmless case to misunderstandings, in the worst case to serious wrong decisions and accidents. Anyone who knows the limits of current AI systems and the fundamental differences between machine and human intelligence can evade them - and develop systems that really help people. 2:20 pm Case Studies - Interface Solutions Magazino: How the Interaction between Robots and Humans will really look like // Moritz Tenorth, CTO Magazino Magazino develops autonomous mobile pick-and-place robots for warehouses, a notoriously difficult area of automation with its complex environment and close encounters with humans. The startup secured investments from Zalando and Siemens among others, its first robots are in live operation, and Magazino is in a good position to revolutionize warehouse logistics - but maybe in a different way than most people think. Moritz Tenorth will talk about how AI and machine learning can help solving this problem, and which potentials and challenges are caused by human-machine interaction. Disappearing User Interfaces? Advancing the Transition from Traditional to Truly Conversational Human-Machine-Interaction // Dr. Norbert Pfleger, CEO SemVox Modern machines are getting more and more complex to interact with, and cars are a prominent example. From navigating to entertainment, simple buttons to control functions are becoming increasingly confusing. SemVox propagates a unique way to talk with machines and technology in a natural way, thereby advancing the transition from traditional to conversational user interfaces. To make the interaction efficient, its technology can learn the pereferences of the driver, anticipate next steps and make suggestions. Among SemVox s clients are several big European car OEMs and First Tiers. Norbert Pfleger explains how the SemVox technology was implemented in the new Audi A8, A7, A6 and Q8 and gives an outline of his learnings for the future of human-machine-interaction.
PROGRAM Decoding our inner life: When AI learns to read a person s personality from communication // Peter Klingspor, CEO Precire Our language contains far more information than we might think. Precire combines AI with years of psychological research to decode patterns in written and spoken language. The technology provides fascinating insights into the interaction of personality, communication and behavior. Application fields are wide. For example at the insurance group talanx and at temporary employance agency randstad, the technology is used to assess internal job candidates. A mobile service provider is testing it to optimize persona-based tariff offers. Other companies are using it as a starting point for personal and communicational development of their leadership team. Peter Klingspor, former Head of Digital Investments at Talanx and CEO of Precire, will share his vision of this type of man-machine interaction. 3:20 pm Open Discussion AI changes the economy. Will AI change us? Peter Klingspor, CEO Precire Sami Haddadin, Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (requested) Volker Wittpahl, Director of the Institute for Innovation and Technology, VDI/VDE-IT Moderation: Robert Thielicke, Editor in Chief Technology Review 3:50 pm Coffee break Session 4: From Technology to Strategy 4:20 pm Talk A strategic view on AI // Andreas Liebl, Managing Director of applied AI, UnternehmerTUM Artificial intelligence as the final goal of machine learning is a remarkable technological advancement. It s implementation and capabilities however have strategic implications for companies. Business models will change and the challenges companies face on their path to AI adoption are unique. Andreas Liebl and his team have developed and tested a strategy framework to take the challenges on our way into the AI age. In his talk he moves from the technological argument towards an economic view and strategic questions. 4:40 pm Case Studies Strategy AI is not a product, it is a feature // Jackson Bond, Co-Founder, Chief Industry Evangelist, New Business relayr Becoming an AI-powered company is useless - unless you know exactly, what AI should do to your business outcomes. Implementing it means focussing on the results and not on the technology itself, and understanding that AI is just one part of a larger package. Jackson Bond will highlight cases from engineering companies, showing what it means to implement AI enabled solutions in industrial processes - and how you know if you need it. Why AI is much more than IT // Jens Ottnad, Manager Advance Development Networked Systems, TRUMPF Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH There is no plug and play solution: To make Artificial Intelligence work, you need deep knowledge about the product or process where it shall be applied. Be it autonomous cars or factory automation, classical engineering is as important as algorithmic excellence and data acquisition.
PROGRAM Two former completely seperate fields have to work neatly together. Trumpf is an excellent example of an engineering driven company who managed to build this bridge, for example using AI to make one of their newest laser cutting machines more autonomous. Jens Ottnad talks about the approach Trumpf takes in AI - and what potential the company sees in this technology. Should AI be a legal entity? // Jürgen Weichert, Head of Global Product Development Liability, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE Machine Learning changes the nature of a product fundamentally: It has no longer exactly defined specifications, but can learn and adapt as the environment changes. This will pose new legal questions: What does this mean for liability and accountability? Who is responsible if an AI-System damages assets or even worse risks human lives? Should an AI be a legal entity? Allianz as a leading global insurance company has to be prepared, and Jürgen Weichert will present several theses on how to deal with these challenges. 5:40 pm Talk What s next? How Machine Learning on Quantum Computers will power the future // Sheir Yarkoni, D-Wave Systems Inc. Quantum computers hold the promise of solving fundamentally difficult problems like optimization, quantum simulations, and machine learning. In this talk, D-Wave Systems, the first quantum computing company, will show how they are using their quantum processors in the field of AI. Examples from companies like Volkswagen and Siemens will show how to use quantum computers for tasks such as deep learning, genetic algorithms, and reinforcement learning. Next-generation machine learning algorithms will also be discussed. 6:00 pm Networking & Winter BBQ PROGRAM Day 2 (21 November 2018) 9:00 am - Workshop series in Cooperation with appliedai 3:00 pm We transform the sometimes theoretical and hard to grasp domain of AI into a hands-on exploration of technological capabilities and business models. Together with experts from industry and academia you will explore the building blocks of AI and discuss their implications. There are 3 different workshops, each organized in 4 parallel groups, so you won t miss anything. Session 1: Hands-on 9:00 am Machine vision applications / Machine vision hands-on (4 Groups) 10:30 am Language applications / Language hands-on (4 Groups) 12:00 pm Coffee Break with Snacks Session 2: Strategy 1:00 pm AI value chain and vision / AI positioning and prioritization (4 Groups) 3:00 pm Ending notes, Snacks & Networking
