4. The sewn quilt top should measure approximately 42 ½" x 51" (1.08m x 1.30m) between the seam intersections around the outside edges. Trim all four sides 1" (2.54cm) inside the seam intersections for a finished size of 40 ½" x 49" (1.08m x 1.25m) as shown in Diagram C. Tip: Use 1" (2.54cm) painter's tape to provide a straight cutting edge and to keep the bias edges from stretching. Dia. C Trim 1" 40 ½" x 49" (1.03m x 1.24m) 42 ½" x 51" (1.08m x 1.30m) 40 ½" x 49" (1.03m x 1.24m) 5. The backing yardage is sufficient to cover the length and width of the top. If using a long arm to quilt, extra fabric basted onto backing edges might be necessary. Quilting 6. Press finished quilt top and backing fabric. Tape the backing wrong side up to a firm surface. Layer batting and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together with safety pins. Refer to quilting (Diagram D) for a simple yet creative quilting design. Quilt in the ditch (next to each seam), between the rows to anchor the quilt top to the backing. Quilt diagonal lines through the center of each row to complement the argyle look of this quilt. Use a removable marker (test first) or masking tape to mark lines for a stitching guide or a guide attachment for the presser foot. Tip: Sewing with an even-feed foot is helpful when quilting through layers. This feeds the fabric more evenly and prevents wrinkles on the back of the quilt. Once quilting is complete, square up corners and edges, trimming excess backing and batting even with the quilt top. Dia. D page 4
Finishing 7. To make the binding, remove selvages and sew the short ends of the 2 ½" x 42" (6.35cm x 1.07m) strips RST end to end at a 45 angle to make one continuous strip; press seams open. Press one short end ¼" (6.35mm) to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. Leaving a 2" (5.08cm) tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded binding even with the edge of the quilt top and sew, mitering the corners. Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the binding. Fold binding over to back and hand stitch. Finished Care Instructions Machine wash in cold water; gentle cycle. Tip: Before drying, check for fabric dyes that may have run. If fabric dyes run, rewash and rinse using Shout Color Catcher. Lay flat to dry or tumble dry low. page 5
