There are a few things I wuld like yu t knw befre yu get started n yur summer wrk. - Making art shuld be fun nt wrk - Being creative is nt always easy - Hard wrk pays ff in the end - Nthing is wrth ding if yu aren t willing t take risks! - Nt every piece f art will be successful but it WILL be a valuable learning experience. - Never trash anything yu make, keep everything because yu never knw when yu might be able t use it. - Take lts f pictures this summer Snap away n thse phnes but keep in mind an artistic eye! - Hld n tight t yur survival guide it will help yu!!! - I am always here fr yu, t supprt yu, encurage yu, and guide yu. The requirements fr IB Visual Arts are as fllws: HL students Cmparative Study Prcess Prtfli Exhibitin Cmpare at least 3 different artwrks, by at least 2 different artists, with cmmentary ver 10 t 15 screens. An additinal 3 t 5 screens reflecting n yur wn persnal wrk and hw the art/artists yu examined have influenced yur practices and wrk 13 t 25 screens f selected materials, pages frm yur arts jurnal, which depict evidence f yur experimentatin, explratin, manipulatin and refinement f yur visual arts activities ver the 2 years. Submitted wrk must be in at least 3 different art-making frms. 8 t 11 pieces with exhibitin text fr each alng with a curatrial ratinale (700 wrds). The submitted reslved artwrk shuld shw evidence f yur technical accmplishments during this curse and an understanding f the use f materials, ideas and practices. IB Visual Arts Summer Wrk Year 1 (HL & SL) Please cmplete the fllwing assignments. These will be due n the first day f class. Materials Needed fr Summer Wrk: (Yu will use these items als thrughut the year) Visual Arts Jurnal This can take any frm but may I suggest a hard cver sketchbk that is bund n the side. I wuld suggest rdering the Cansn Basic frm Blick Art Supplies item # 10350-1011. Please get a flder/ binder t keep lse sketches, pictures, and ther items in. Yu may even chse t get an accrdin file flder. Since yu will be wrking at hme, as well as schl, yu will need sme drawing pencils, clred pencils, maybe a small waterclr palette as well as any ther supplies yu might want t have n hand t wrk in yur Arts Jurnal with. Nte*** Yu will need the text Living with Art; 10 editin by Mark Getlein, fr this curse (but yu will nt need it fr yur summer wrk). Assignment 1: What did I sign up fr??? Take a few days and READ the survival guide I have prvided yu. It has a wealth f infrmatin in it and will be a valuable resurce ver the next 2 years. Assignment 2: Art Vcabulary Elements f Art COLOR, VALUE, LINE, SHAPE, FORM, TEXTURE, SPACE Principles f Design BALANCE, EMPHASIS, UNITY, CONTRAST, MOVEMENT, PATTERN, RHYTHM Please d the fllwing fr each f abve art terms: 1. Define each term in yur wn wrds, use a separate page f yur arts jurnal per wrd (frnt and back cunts as 2 pages) 2. Find a piece f wrk that depicts the term clearly in the piece and tell me hw ( make sure yu cite all yur images this is a must! 3. Create a small sketch with yur wn interpretatin f this this can be in any art frm yu wuld like including phtgraphy explain hw the term is present Knwing these art terms will help yu with yur summer wrk and will be imprtant fr yu t have a strng understanding as yu prgress thrugh this IB curse. Please cmplete these in the first few pages f yur arts jurnal.

Assignment 3: Museum/Gallery Visit and Critique - - This is a must d DC is full f art Museums but just as gd is a lcal gallery. Lk fr galleries while yu are n vacatin. Be inspired by smething yu find! - In yur many travels this summer please visit a Museum r a Gallery. Find a piece that yu cannt seem t mve pass. One that says smething t yu. Critique the wrk and recrd yur findings in yur arts jurnal. Make sure yu give the artist s name, medium, and style r perid f wrk Als include the name f the gallery r museum Include a picture f the piece r sketch ne in yur jurnal. Refer t Hw t Critique Art fr help writing a critique abut a piece f art yur artist has created. Assignment 4: Wh am I and What I Like? - In yur art jurnal I wuld like yu t create 5 pages f images f wh yu are and what things interest yu. These things culd be assciated with yur family, hbbies, places yu like t travel etc... - Each page shuld be different and fcus n ne theme, s yu will have 5 different themed pages. Yu can include pictures and drawings but all pages need t include yur thughts in writing. - Be creative but they shuldn t lk like scrap bk pages. - Once yu have finished the 5 pages I want yu t cme up with a prject idea that incrprates ne r mre f yur pages. This culd be a self-prtrait, landscape, cllage, etc... Think abut what medium yu wuld use t cmplete this piece Sketch ut ideas fr a final piece in yur jurnal include yur thughts and ideas in written frm als. *** Remember yu are just beginning yur jurney in IB Studi Art. Yu are nt limited t these entries and yu may want t d mre. Yur summer wrk will help get us started the first few weeks f schl. Analyzing artwrks: a step by step guide Fllw these steps, answer all questins and yu can t g wrng! Remember that yur wn drawings/ cpies f the artwrk shuld accmpany all written analysis. 1: First Reactin Write dwn yur first respnse t the artwrk. D yu like it? Hw des it make yu feel? Des it remind yu f anything yu have seen befre? 2: Descriptin List what yu can see in this artwrk Figures, clrs, shapes, backgrunds etc... Imagine yu are describing it t a blind persn. D this in as much detail as pssible. 3: Frmal Analysis Write dwn yur bservatins in mre detail, lking at these specific aspects f the artwrk: - Clr: Which type f palette has the artist used: is it bright r dull, strng r weak? Are the clrs mstly cmplementary, primary, secndary, r tertiary? Which clrs are used the mst in this artwrk? Which clrs are used the least in the artwrk? Are the clrs used in different ways in different parts f the artwrk? Have the clrs been applied flay, straight frm the tube, r have different clrs been mixed? - Tnes Is there a use f light/ shadw in this artwrk? Where is the light cming frm? Where are the shadws? Are the frms in the artwrk realistically mdelled (des it lk 3D)? Is there a wide range f tnal cntrast (very light highlights and very dark shadws) r is the tnal range quite narrw (ie mstly similar tnes)? - Use f Media: What medium has been used? Hw has the artist used the medium ie is the paint applied thick r thin? Hw can yu tell? Can yu see brushstrkes, markmaking r texture? Describe the shape and directin f the brushstrkes/ marks. Was it painted, drawn, sculpted, quickly, r slwly and painstakingly? What makes yu think this? - Cmpsitin (rganizatin f shapes) What types f shapes are used in this artwrk Is there a mixture f different types f shapes r are all the shapes similar?

Are sme parts f the cmpsitin full f shapes and sme parts empty, r are the shapes spread evenly acrss the artwrk? Des the whle cmpsitin full f energy and mvement, r des it lk still and peaceful? Hw did the artist create this mvement/ stillness? What is the center f interest in the cmpsitin? Hw des the artist draw yur attentin t it? - Md/ Emtin: What d yu think the artist wanted yu t feel when yu lk at this artwrk? What has he/she used t create a md (think abut clr, shape, tne etc... ) Hw has he/she succeeded in creating this md? (fr example strng vivid clrs might be used t create jy r angry md in an artwrk, depending upn hw the artist has used them). Culd the same md have been created in a different way? Hw culd yu change this? 5: Evaluatin: 4: Interpretatin Nw write dwn yur persnal thughts abut the wrk: there are n right r wrng answers here. What d yu think the artist is trying t say in this artwrk? What des it mean? What is the main theme r idea behind this space? If yu were inside this artwrk, what wuld be feeling/thinking? Des the artwrk have a narrative (tell a stry)? Is it a religius artwrk? Is it abstract? Is it realistic? Why? Hw wuld yu explain this artwrk t smene else? Based n what yu have bserved already, give yur pinin f the artwrk. Yu must give reasns t supprt yu pinin. Reference all wrks using apprpriate citatin line: - Artist s name (Cuntry, DOB- DOD) - Artwrk Title (Date f executin/ cmpletin) - Frm and / r medium - Dimensins - Owner/ Cllectin/ Gallery A visual Art Critical Analysis shuld be visual: Make multiple cpies f the wrk/s yu are critiquing, enlarging interesting details that yu will mentin in the analysis and / r interpretatin. Draw arrws, lines and shapes ver the images t draw attentin t details r demnstrate cmpsitin elements. Use subject specific terminlgy as much as pssible and as apprpriate, but give particular attentin t the spelling f the terms (and the name f the artist and the title f the wrk!)
