Rae-Bon Sew & Quilt Shop SPOOLS OF NEWS November 2018 for the sewist in the know IS THERE REALLY A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHAIN STORE FABRIC AND FABRIC FROM A QUILT SHOP? We hear all the time that fabric purchased from a quilt shop is a better quality than fabric you would purchase from a chain store. But what really makes it better? This month, we explore what really makes the fabric sold in a quilt shop premium quilting fabric compared to what is sold in a chain store. Premium quilt fabric starts with a higher quality of grey goods with a minimum thread count of 60 by 60 thread count (most are higher than 60 by 60). A higher thread count produces a silkier hand, less bearding when quilted, longer fabric life, and better printing definition. Chain store fabric has a much lower thread count. The diameter of the cotton filaments is smaller and the length of the cotton staple is longer in premium quilting fabric. There is also a difference in the printing of premium quilting fabric versus chain store fabric. Chain store fabric can be printed on high speed rotary presses because their screens are not as complex. Premium quilting fabric is printed using a slower, more precise flat bed press. This allows the screens to be more complex and the printing to be more accurate. Premium quilting fabric also tends to use more colors and thus a larger number of screens. Once the printing is complete, chemical baths are used to set the design. The process used for setting premium fabrics is a lengthy more expensive process. This means premium fabrics are more colorfast and less likely to bleed. The fabrics are also left with a better silkier texture. Store Hours: Monday-Friday: 10am-5:30 pm Saturday: 10am-4pm Sunday: Closed Rae-Bon will be closed November 22 for Thanksgiving 3060 25th St SW Fargo, ND 701-433-7203 www.rae-bon.com reddoor@rae-bon.com

VIKING/PFAFF CONVENTION This month my travels took me to New Orleans, home of this year's Viking/Pfaff Dealer convention. New Orleans is a very eclectic city. I had a little time to explore Saturday afternoon and enjoy the 80 degree weather. Queork is a great little shop that sells only items made of cork. I also stopped in several shops and watched a parade in front of my hotel. Sunday morning it was down to business with the opening of Viking convention. Several new machines were introduced: the Designer Brilliance 80 which replaces the Designer Diamond and Ruby Royale and the Brilliance 75Q which replaces the Sapphire 965Q. Brand new to the Viking family is the Platinum MN 1000 which is a 10 needle embroidery machine. In the quilting world, the Designer Fabric Frame was introduced. The next 2 ½ days were filled with classes on the Viking machines. I had a great session working with various feet on the Viking Epic 980Q. I love how you can do pop up, sequin, and applique stitches that are exclusive to the Viking machines. You'll have to check this out in the shop. I worked on the Designer Brilliance 80 to create a beautifully embossed leather notebook cover. The embossing was actually an embroidery design that was stitched on vinyl and then a decorative wax was rubbed over it. Watch for this as a class in 2019. Have you heard about MySewnet? I was glad to be able to get more information on this. If you google MySewnet it says "is designed to give you easy and convenient access to information needed to enhance your sewing and embroidery experience". There are videos on machine operation, blogger posts, and storage for your embroidery designs to be sent wirelessly to your wifi enabled Viking and Pfaff machines. One Sewnet account works for both brands. You can even be alerted when your embroidery machine needs a thread change. We entered the convention hall Wednesday morning to a celebration! Pfaff is celebrating 50 years of IDT! The stage had a gold backdrop and gold balloons were released. If you are not familiar with IDT, come and see what it's all about. New machines were introduced during the opening ceremonies for Pfaff convention. There are four new sewing machines shown: Quilt Expression 720, Expression 710, Ambition 620, and Ambition 610. The Pfaff 10 needle Creative Stylist MN 110 embroidery only machine and the Creative Fabric Frame were also highlighted. Classes followed through Thursday afternoon. I had a great class on the Pfaff Creative Icon. Not only does it have the coveted IDT, but it also has the exclusive floating, stacking, and ribbon stitches. There was a sample dress made with ribbon stitches that was outstanding. The built in embroidery designs are beautiful. If embroidery is not for you, but you want all the other outstanding features check out the Pfaff Performance Icon. After five days of classes it was time to travel home. Machines and products are arriving, so be sure to check them out. 2

3. Rough cut the squares apart. Keeping the square flat, open the strip and press. Be sure that the tips of the square are covered when you press the strip open. 4. Flip the unit over and use a straight edge to trim the fabric even with the original square. CREATIVE GRIDS STRIPPY STARS The Creative Grids Strippy Stars tool allows you to quickly and easily make star point units in eight sizes from squares and strips. The tool ensures your points will be aligned right so they won t be cut off. To use the tool: 1. Mark the wrong side of the star point fabric square with the Creative Grids Strippy Stars Tool. 2. Place the marked square and the strip right side together with the marked square on top. Position the drawn line on the square ¼ away from the edge of the fabric strip. Leave roughly ¼ between the squares as you place them on the strip. 5. Repeat the previous process to complete the star point. This time the tip should be facing away from you. 6. Rough cut the squares apart. Keeping the square flat, open the strip and press. Be sure that the tips of the square are covered when you press open. 7. Use a straight edge to trim the fabric even with the original square to complete the star point. THE RULER OF THE MONTH IS 15% OFF! 3

Explore the features and stitches of your new sewing machine. You will stitch samples, learn the functions of your machine, and basic cleaning. Open to Baby Lock, Pfaff, and Viking owners. No charge for machines purchased at Rae-Bon; $50.00 for others. Bring your machine, accessory feet, foot control, power cord, spool of thread, and bobbin. New Owners Classes are by appointment. Please call the shop at 433-7203 to register. Never enough time to get everything done? Join us to sew with friends (or make some new ones). Treat yourself to a mini-retreat! Monday, November 16: 10 am-5 pm Friday, November 19: 10 am - 5 pm Bring your machine and project to work on. Advance registration is required to save your spot. 4
