Twin Cities kick off for the program year!! A Message from the President Another Stellar Lineup! By David Baldwin, JD, CLU, ChFC, CFP, MA President Hello, chapter members, and welcome to the 2005-2006 program year. This year will build on the great success of last year. As you may know, the Twin Cities Chapter has received the Chapter of the year award for 2004-2005! Your board has been working hard to expand the excellent education programs, provide additional networking opportunities, and improve ethical behavior in the financial services profession. This year, almost all programs will offer CE credits for insurance as well as CLE credits. We will continue to pursue CLE approval. We expect these programs will attract more CPAs and attorneys to our events, which will increase our networking opportunities. We will expand our partnership with Rotary clubs and the Center for Ethical Business Cultures to provide ethical education and awards. Look at the exciting lineup of meetings! Full-Day Ethics and Estate Planning Symposium Last year, this event attracted almost 300 people. This event will be repeated on May 4, 2006 at the Sheraton in Bloomington. Watch for more details! Two Half-Day Continuing Education Events This year, we will give you two opportunities to receive 4 hours of Continuing Education credits at once. One event will be a debate on active vs. passive investment management. Another event will be an indepth look at the advantages of how to use trusts in financial planning. Three Two-Hour Breakfast Meetings This year we have outstanding speakers lined up to address estate planning, qualified plans, and deferred compensation issues. Please remember to invite the attorneys and CPAs you work with to our meetings! We are working on increasing our membership by offering programs that specifically address legal and accounting issues, as well as financial planning opportunities. Watch for special events! Finally, thank you for the opportunity to be your President this year. Working with all of you is a distinct pleasure. If you have a thought or comment you would like to share, please give me a call at 612-678-1521. If you would like to join a committee or attend a board meeting, please feel welcome. See you at the September 15 th meeting! SFSPTC Watercooler, 9/05 1
Twin Cities wins prestigious Chapter of the Year Award! By Mary Petersen, JD, CLU, ChFC, CFP Immediate Past President/Nominations Committee Chairperson Your Twin Cities Chapter captured the coveted Chapter of the Year Award for the 2004-2005 chapter year! Thanks to all our members and to our dedicated board, we ve gained recognition on a national basis for the quality of our membership and our programs. This is an outstanding first-time achievement for the Twin Cities. We competed in the largest chapter category and won based on our membership increases and the quality of our programs and daily operations. The competition was tough, but the Twin Cities won! Winning this award is a real testament to the strength of our membership and the direction we are headed. Our spring Symposium attracted new members from the CPA and attorney communities and we are seeing renewed interest from our long-time members. Stay tuned this year as there are many more great things on the way! As Chapter President last year, I want to thank each member and each member of our board for making 2004-2005 a stellar year. I raise my glass to each of you and say a heart-felt, Cheers!. The 2006 Minnesota Business Ethics Award (MBEA TM ) is GROWING! By Jim Christian, CLU, ChFC MBEA Co-Chair The Minnesota Business Ethics Award TM (MBEA TM ) was established in 1999 by the Center for Ethical Business Cultures and the Minnesota Chapters of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. The MBEA TM recognizes and honors Minnesota businesses that practice ethical conduct for the benefit of the workplace, marketplace, environment, and community. Minnesota has achieved a reputation throughout the nation and internationally as being a leader in corporate responsibility and publicprivate partnership. What s new this year? 1. The Center For Ethical Business Cultures and the Society Of Financial Service Professionals were joined with the Rotary Clubs of Edina and White Bear Lake (representing Rotary Districts 5950 and 5960) in 2005. Numerous other clubs have now expressed interest in participating. We will be using both our memberships to nominate and honor companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to our Minnesota and Society tradition of corporate citizenship and ethical business conduct. 2. The Education Forum and Awards Banquet will run concurrently with full-day event called The Ethics & Estate Planning Symposium. This event will again serve as our regular chapter meeting for May 2006 offering numerous CE credits, and will incorporate the MBEA Awards Ceremony during the lunch. How can I participate? Nominate one or more of your clients! A business may be nominated for the Award by anyone who is impressed with its demonstration of ethical business conduct. Nominating your clients can greatly enhance your business relationship! The fast one-page form is available on our web site at www.sfsptwincities.org or by calling our office at (651) 255-6556.
