NORTH PITTSBURGH QUILTERS GUILD MARCH 2014 NEWSLETTER www.npqg.org May love and laughter light your days And warm your heart and home. May good and faithful friends be yours, wherever you may roam. May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures. May all life s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours! Have you finished your quilt for the show yet? The March 4 th deadline is right around the corner. To date, we have received 2 applications. Two quilts do not make a very good showing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get your applications to Louise Warner as soon as possible. The quilt does not have to be finished. As long as we can get a picture of the quilt top, that is sufficient for the application. I am still looking for a few slice quilts. If you have not made previous arrangements to drop your quilts off at Carol Hartman s or with me at Joann Fabrics, PLEASE be sure to bring them to the March meeting. If you can only get to Joann Fabrics in the daytime, you can leave the quilt at the Viking Sewing Center. They have graciously offered to collect them for me. We still need donations for the dream baskets. Trish previously sent an email about the items that we need. We will be talking about volunteers for the show at the March meeting. Sue Orleman is heading up this portion for the show and she will be your contact person when you decide to sign up.

I hope everyone is mentioning the show to everyone they see. Posters and flyers will be available at the meeting. Sue Sebastian is heading up the publicity committee. Please contact her if you need any of the posters or flyers to hand out or hang up at your library, church, school, etc. We need to get the word out to as many people as we can. Thanks for your support. With your help we can make this a very successful Show. Carol Beck Hi all! Gee, it seems like a long time since we have been together. We all will remember this winter for a long time. I have seen signs that spring will come again. Sam s club is loaded with summer furniture, inflatable swimming stuff and daffodils blooming! This newsletter is loaded with lots of important information as we are trying to get caught up after missing two meetings. We have so much going on. The community service project, the quilt show and two wonderful workshops are all ahead of us. What an exciting way to end the winter blues. Speaking of community service, please come as early at 6:00 with your machine to gain a little more work time at the next meeting. National Quilting Day will be celebrated on Saturday March 15 th. Let s celebrate the whole month and finish our quilts and enjoy the creative process. I m looking forward to seeing you all at the March meeting. Donna

Please remember to contact Elsie Richards with requests to send our cards in our Sunshine Program. dbemrich@yahoo.com If she doesn t know who could use some sunshine, she can t send some. Thanks. Your hospitaility duo is asking for Fat quarter goodies for March meeting. Please sign up. Sylviaklynn@gmail.com Thanks, Sylvia. Just a reminder.. The dream basket committee is still in need of donations for the baskets. We plan to have several quilting and sewing baskets; a knitting and crochet basket, a Pittsburgh themed basket, and a holiday basket. Items for any of the themed baskets would be appreciated. Thank you, Tricia COMMUNITY SERVICE - Betty Kanis, Chairman This month is our Community Service workshop. We will finish the star blocks and assemble them into quilt tops. We need sewers with their machines and basic sewing supplies including a light neutral thread. You will not need cutting supplies (cutters, mats, rulers, etc.) as everything is precut. There is no hand sewing to be done. We could use 2 more ironing boards and irons. If you can bring one, please let me know in advance. Also, please bring any star blocks that you have not turned in yet. We need them all. We have received permission from Sister Agnes to access the facilities at 6:00 that evening. If you would like to come early and get a head start on sewing, it would be appreciated. An extra hour of sewing time can mean a lot. Our regular meeting is still scheduled for 7:30, at which time Donna will have a short business meeting.

I will also be asking Guild members to help with the quilting and binding. A couple have already wolunteered. We have all necessary supplies such as backing, batting, and fabric for finishing. Nancy Jeffries has volunteered to do the pillowcases. I hope to have 5 or 6 tops completed. On April 10, the QOV Group is doing a presentation of 40 quilts at the Semper Fi Camp for Disabled Veterans. Hopefully ours can be among them. Thanks once again to all of you for your hellp and cooperation with this project. All fabric being used has been donated by guild members. PROGRAMS - Loretta Crum, Chairman Thanks to the efforts of Lisa Cope, we will enjoy a special treat in April a lecture and two workshops by Jan Krentz, nationally and internationally known quilt teacher and lecturer. Jan hails from California and is known for her exquisite work with various star and diamond patterns. She has written five detailed books explaining and illustrating her techniques. Jan frequently teaches classes at national quilt show, so bringing her to the Burg saves us travel expense as well as lowers our cost for the classes. April 1 meeting Jan Krentz will explain her quilts and techniques for making her fabulous quilts. Jan will discuss her quilt images and construction techniques and, of course, WOW! Us with a trunk show of her beautiful creations. Any non-members who attend this lecture must pay a $10 fee at the door. This includes any guests that a member may bring. April 1 workshop is Hunter Star Asymmetric. Supply list is on our website or on Jan s website www.jankrentz.com/workshops.php April 2 workshop is Love That Lone Star (lone star basics) The supply list is on our website or check it out on Jan s. Workshops will be held at Kearns Spirituality Center. Attendees may bring their own lunch or take a lunch break with Jan at the Passavant Cafeteria. The member fee for each workshop is $50. Those who attend both receive a reduced total price of $90. Payment guarantees your space in the workshop. If all spaces are not filled by Guild members by Monday, March 17, the workshops will be open to non-members at a fee of $60 per workshop. That means that your payment must be received by March 17. Loretta Crum will take registrations at meetings or by email at Loretta.crum@verizon.net or by phone at 412-366-1609. There will be a signup sheet at the March meeting. Payment

should be given to Loretta at the March meeting or mailed to her at 109 Gadshill Place, Pittsburgh PA 15237. Please see Jan Merritt or Linda Williams to pick up your raffle tickets they will be looking for you but don t be afraid to grab them first. Jan is collecting the blocks for Donna s President block compilation, if you are ready. Last chance for the Fons and Porter Subscription Special if you would like a one-year subscription for the special offer price of $15, with some added perks. 3 spools of thread and 2 bonus instruction booklets. Please see Jan to sign the form and submit a check for $15 payable to the Build. We will proceed to send in our order. Jan has two names and checks so far. The offer is over mid-march. So, please be sure to get your order in at the March meeting. Jan and Linda Preview Party The Preview Party is held the night before the quilt show for all the participants who have quilts hanging in the show. It is at this event that the winners are revealed and the prizes are handed out. Volunteers are needed to provide cookies for this event.
