Turning Times THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE CASCADE WOODTURNERS August 2011 Please make sure that all content for the next newsletter reaches me by the 1st of September! rgklug@crestviewcable.com Thanks! NEXT MEETING: 7:00PM, THURSDAY, August 18 th AT FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL 5405 SE Woodward St, Portland, OR A Wonderful Picnic PRESIDENTS MESSAGE In case you missed it, we couldn t have asked for nicer weather for the picnic. Phil and Nancy Lapp graciously hosted the event. The food was terrific with more dishes than anyone could sample. Phil even dulled a perfectly good chainsaw cutting through dirt to carve out Hazelnut blanks for us from a downed tree stump. We had an inside-out turning contest with 3 teams (Kathleen Duncan/ Glenn Burki, Jerry Harris/ Steve Newberry, Jerry Klug/ Howard Borer). It was a fun contest with missed directions, one fly-away, liberal design interpretations and interesting tool control. The results will be shown at the August meeting. The next picnic isn t scheduled until the Summer of 2013. We passed around the first sign-up for the Graeme Priddle demo and hands-on sessions at the picnic. His demos are always informative and entertaining. After the meeting night demo with Graeme, we will sponsor a Friday (19 th ) hands-on, a Saturday (20 th ) open demo and a Sunday (21 st ) hands-on. You can e-mail me before the meeting to sign-up or take your chances on the meeting night. The open demo is $30 and Graeme will cover several topics. We have only 8 slots for each of the hands-on sessions ($90) and they will cover different topics (currently South Pacific Vessel and Surface Texturing ). Bring your standard turning tools for these classes along with carving and woodburning tools. We will go over this again at the meeting. Dave Williams dwilliams97007@yahoo.com - 1 -

I caught the wing on the other side of the cove that I was cutting. Normally this would have been at most a design altering cove cut. With inside out turning when the center has already been removed making this error creates not only a design revision but in my case the catch tore the set up off the lathe. I found that inside out turning is a really good teaching tool to remind you to make clean light cuts. With the inside removed your turning is no longer a simple spindle. It has become a very flexible set of interrupted shell pieces. Inattention or heavy cutting with dull tools will not work here. Try the inside out turning as it is both challenging and enjoyable. - 2 -
WOODTURNING/EXERCISE VIDEO Robin Wood makes a wooden bowl from an oak log section that came from Sherwood Forrest. (You may enjoy the video more with the sound turned off) It is interesting how fast he turns using a foot powered pole lathe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3rz2ltc8ps&feature=related -Enjoy SYMPOSIUM SCHEDULE SWATurners Symposium, Waco TX August 26 th 28 th Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposium, Loveland CO Sept 11 th 12 th Yellowstone Woodturners Symposium, Billings, MT October 1st & 2nd North Carolina Woodturners Bi-Annual Symposium, Greensboro NC Nov 4 th 6 th DEMOS - CLASSES SEMINARS Rockler Woodworking 503-672-7266, www.rockler.com Turning Fishing Lures Demo Aug 6 th 9:30 11:30 Talon Chuck Demo Aug 27 th 9:30 11:30 Woodcraft 503-684-1428, www.woodcraft.com Beginning Lathe Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Aug 20 th 10:00-4:00 Intermediate Lathe Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Aug 21 st 10:00-4:00 Pen Turning ($40) by George Hays, Sept 10 th 10:00-1:00 Pen Turning ($40) by George Hays, Sept 14 th 1:00-4:00 Beginning Lathe Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Sept 24 th 10:00-4:00 Basic Bowl Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Sept 25 th 10:00-4:00 Pen Turning ($40) by George Hays, Oct 12 th 1:00-4:00 Beginning Lathe Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Oct 29 th 10:00-4:00 Turning Christmas Ornaments ($105) by Bob Tuck, Oct 30 th 10:00-4:00 Beginning Lathe Turning ($105) by Bob Tuck, Nov 12 th 10:00-4:00 Turning Gift & Specialty Items ($105) by Bob Tuck, Nov 13 th 10:00-4:00 Woodcrafters 503-231-0226, 212 NE 6th Ave, Portland, www.woodcrafters.us Turning a Bowls by Bob Tuck, Aug 27 th 10:00-3:00 LIBRARIANS CORNER If you have an interest in woodburning images on your turnings, airbrushing detailed animals (the same techniques are used for flowers or any other image) and/or piercing to embellish your work then you will probably enjoy the two disc DVD set just added to the library. The lessons on the DVD are by Brian McEvoy. Brian is best known for his deep boring system where he cuts tall thin vessels using 24 volts of light at the end of the boring bar to gage the thickness of the wood. With thin vessels he is want to decorate them and this DVD set shows how he does it. The run time is nearly 4 hours because he not only shows his techniques but demonstrates the entire process in real time with -- 3 --
Canadian pronunciation. If I see a fault with the DVD set it is that some of it moves slowly. If you want to learn the techniques and have never tried these types of embellishments, taking it slow and describing each step may just what you are looking for. Brian was a student of Frank Sodol as was Binn Pho. The piercing and coloring techniques have some similarities between Brian and Binn s work because of the Sodol influence. The DVD is Brian McEvoy s Secrets To Woodburning, Airbrushing, Texturing and Piercing Embellishments. COMING ATTRACTIONS August demonstration will be by Graeme Priddle with hands on work shops following. To see Graeme s work see http://graemepriddle.com. Friday August 19th is hands-on, Saturday the 20th is open demo and Sunday the 21st is another hands-on. $90 for hands-on and $30 for demo. September s demonstrator is Avelino Samuel from St Johns, U.S. Virgin Isl. You can see a few pieces at the Gallery St Thomas site http://gallerystthomas.com/avelinosamuel.asp x. Avelino is a teacher and has taught at the AAW symposiums. This is his first trip to the Northwest. Avelino will be instructing us on carving flutes in a vessel. Dale Larson is hosting an all day demo by Avelino at Dale s shop the day before the meeting, Wednesday, September 14 th. The cost will be $30 per person. Thursday evening Avelino will be the demonstrator at our monthly chapter meeting at the Franklin High School. October will be the annual club auction. -- 4 --
