R & D PROJECTS - 2014 & 15 1. GOVERNMENT SPONSORED PROJECTS 1.1 Completed projects (i) Project title : Designing a compressed air monitoring system to optimize energy consumption in a textile mills (Sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India) Objectives : To quantify the losses occurred due to compressed air leakage To assess the real-time performance of the compressors Development of the software for identification of compressed air losses. Research outcome: Compressed air monitoring system has been designed and as a pilot trial, it has been installed at NITRA for further studies. Refer Fig. No.1 of designed system installed at NITRA pilot plant. Features of Central Compressed Air Monitoring System : Collects data from all the stations, where it is installed. The data is logged into a database at regular intervals Provision to set alarm limits of each parameter. Every alarm event is logged into database. Report generation. Fig.1 : NITRA Compressed Air Monitoring System

Software Features : Datalogging interval 1 ~ 99mins Real time data of all the stations shall be displayed on computer screen. Reports can be generated date wise for all the stations or for individual station. Reports shall be generated in excel data sheet. 1.2 In-house Projects (i) Project title : Development of FR coated blackout fabric. Objectives : Literature survey on existing practices on development of FR coated blackout fabric used for curtains. Collections of blackout fabric and polyester fabric samples (including inherently FR polyester fabric) for the analysis of physicochemical properties. Treatment of polyester fabric with FR finish followed by Coating with various coating materials. Evaluation of developed FR coated blackout fabrics. Research outcome : Various types of FR blackout fabric have been developed. The fabric samples were coated with three types of coating material using coating machine. The coated material were tested for various properties like heat cutting ability, FR properties etc. (ii) Project title : Comparing comfort properties of hollow polyester and polyester blended fabric for sportswear. Objectives : To analyze the blended fabrics for comfort properties and compare the results To see the application of blended fabrics in the sports wear. Research outcome : Comfort properties of hollow polyester and polyester blended fabric for sports wear have been evaluated and product has been developed. (iii) Project title : Comparing dyeing behavior of hollow polyester and polyester yarns and their blends. Objectives : To dye hollow polyester and polyester and their blends with various disperse dyes. To compare dyeing behavior of hollow-polyester and polyester yarns and their blends using various tools like computer colour matching, spectrophotometer. Research outcome : Hollow polyester and polyester and their blends with disperse dyes have successfully dyed.

(iv) Project title : Development of stretchable knitted fabric. Objectives : To develope stretchable knitted fabric To evaluate the characteristic of developed fabric Research outcome : Stretchable knitted fabric has been developed using slack mercerisation Developed samples have been evaluated (v) Project title : To study dyeing behaviour of various inherent FR fibres Objectives : To dye the inherent FR fibres with suitable dyes To evaluate the colour strength using CCM To evaluate fastness properties Research outcome : Dyeing behaviour of inherent FR & FR fibres have been studied & evaluated using CCM. (vi) Project title : Development of fire & heat resistant multi layered self stitched fabric Objectives : To develop single, double and triple layer of fabric on loom using suitable weave design. To analyse various physical properties of the developed fabric for selection of suitable weave structure. To create flame retardant property in the selected fabric by application of a suitable chemical finish. To evaluate physico chemical properties of finished fabric. Research outcome : Fire retardant multi layered fabric have been developed. The fabrics were single & double layered (cotton, polyester or viscose fabric These multilayered fabric samples were tested for physical, chemical and FR properties. (vii)project title : Creating FR properties using locally available chemicals in cotton fabrics. Objectives : To develop FR fabric using locally available chemicals To evaluate the developed fabric for FR properties. Research outcome : FR Properties in cotton using locally available chemical have been successfully achieved.

2. ON-GOING PROJECTS 2.1 Government Sponsored Projects (i) Project title : Development of specialty embroidery yarn for application in stretchable fabrics, like knitted fabrics (Sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India) Objectives : To develop multi-component embroidery thread for stretch fabric. To produce multi-component embroidery thread using elastane filament, water soluble PVA fiber and polyester or viscose as sheath fiber on DREF-3 m/c. To carry out various types of embroidery with multicomponent thread and normal embroidery thread on knitted fabrics. To compare how multi-component embroidery thread and normal embroidery thread affects the stretch ability of the fabric. Progress of work : Procurement of dyed fibres (polyester & viscose) is under progress Up gradation of DREF machine (ii) Project title : Development of fabric smoothness tester (Sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India) Objectives : To design the apparatus as per the requirement. To develop/fabricate the apparatus as per the design. To take preliminary trials on the developed/fabricated apparatus to verify/optimise the suitability of design and if require to modify accordingly To analyse smoothness properties of various fabrics using newly developed/fabricated apparatus. Progress of work : Designing part of smoothness tester is under progress. 2.2 In-house Projects (i) Project title : A study on extraction and application of sugarcane fibres in textiles. Objectives : To explore extraction of fibres from the sugarcane bagasse and develop pure and blended sugarcane yarns using natural man-made fibres

Progress of work : Fibres have been extracted & treated with various chemicals & enzymes to get finer & smooth fibres. (ii) Project title : Development of suitable work-wear for workers of oil and gas industry. Objectives : To analyse the suitability of existing work-wear to withstand potential hazard like heat & flame in oil and gas industry. To develop suitable fabric compositions for workers Progress of work : Various types of fibres including Nylon 66, p-aramid, m-aramid, modacrylic, hollow polyester & FR viscose etc. were collected. These fibres were blended in different proportions and converted into yarn. Fabric samples were manufactured using these yarns. Testing of these fabrics are under progress. (iii) Project title : To explore the possibility and application of the corn husk in textiles Objectives : To extract and compare the composition and physicochemical properties of cornhusk fibres with other cellulosic fibres. To explore the possibility of development of yarns using any suitable yarn manufacturing technology either using 100% cornhusk or its blends. To optimize the dyeing process of cornhusk fibres using various classes of dyes and evaluating their physical and chemical properties. To finish developed material to impart softness and other required properties. To design and develop a product line using corn husks and their blends Progress of work : The corn husk fibres were dyed using various classes of dyes and their physico-chemical properties were evaluated. The blended yarns were woven in to various types of fabrics. These fabric samples were successfully dyed and finished with softener to impart softness and smooth feel. The garments and upholstery product lines were successfully developed. (iv) Project title : Studies of process variables on functional properties of cotton nylon fibre blends Objectives : To study the influence of spinning process variables on yarn properties produced out of various blends of specialty nylon fibre and cotton.

To study the migration behaviour of specialty nylon fibre in blended yarns. To study the behaviour of process variables of weaving on functional properties of fabric produced out of blended yarn of specialty nylon fibre/cotton. Progress of work : Literature review on the subject is completed Preparation of yarn samples out of specialty nylon fibre and cotton blends is under progress (v) Project title : Investigation on process variables on functional properties of cotton/corn blended fabric. Objectives : To have critical study of the properties of corn fibres Based on the study of fibre properties, to identify the processing and functional characteristics which may be influenced by process variables To produce yarn samples using corn fibres with different manufacturing process variables To produce fabric using yarn samples produced from corn fibres using different parameters To have detailed investigation on the behavior of the process variables on the functional characteristics of the fabric To explore the possibility of enhancing the flame retardant properties of the developed material, using flame retardant chemicals To apply statistical tool and prepare mathematical models for predicting the functional behavior of corn blended material Progress of work : Yarn & fabric samples (preliminary trial) have been developed with 100% corn fibre Following fabric parameters are to be tested to assess the functional characteristics such as flammability, abrasion resistance, air-permeability,& antimicrobial properties (vi) Project title : De-colorization of cotton textile wet processing effluent through nano particles Objectives : Preparation and characterization of suitable nanoparticles, optimization of conditions for best particles preparation. Study on dye removal efficiency using simulated and actual effluent generated from the dyeing of cotton and its blend with reactive, disperse, vat and sulfur class of dyestuff.

Immobilization of nanoparticles on a suitable substrate and their decolorization efficiency estimation. Column studies for color removal using simulated and actual effluent from cotton textile processing industry. Progress of work : A suitable nanoparticle has been prepared and conditions for best particle preparation have been optimized. Studies on dye removal efficiency using simulated effluents containing reactive disperse, vat and sulfur dyes have been carried out. Effect of various salts and auxiliary chemicals on dye removal efficiency has been carried out. Immobilization of nanoparticles on a suitable substrate is being carried out. 3. PROPOSED PROJECTS (i) Project title : Study to enhance Indian Apparel Exports Objectives : To reduce spreading loss and cutting efficiency To develop process-wise benchmarks for sewing operations To suggest techniques for waste minimization and improve efficiency of various departments (ii) Project title : Development of protective work wear for cement porters Objectives : To determine the magnitude of occupational health hazards among cement porters To design and standardize dustproof and comfortable material such as gloves, socks and workwear for cement porters which can suit the climatic and working conditions To evaluate effectivement of the developed material in actual practice and standardization of test methods (iii) Project title : Development of multi layered flame & thermal resistant fabric for fire-fighter clothing

Objectives : To study existing fire fighter clothing/suit being used in India for their suitability related to safety and other physiochemical properties. To study fire fighter/clothing suit use in developed country for their safety and physiochemical properties. To identify gaps in the existing fire fighter suit being used in Indian fire fighters in comparison of fire fighter suit of developed country. Development of multilayered fabrics using various weaves structure, fibres composition and finishing applications in the manufacturing of fibre fighter suit. To evaluate multilayered fabrics for its performance, for safety and other physiochemical properties as per standard. Development of fire fighter clothing/suit (iv) Project title : Development of smart protective textiles for fire fighter, soldier and old-age people Objectives : To develop smart/intelligent textiles to be used by fire fighters and soldiers To develop smart textiles for old age people for continuously monitoring their health condition from distance. To assess the performance of those garments at laboratory level. To take field trial with real fighters, soldiers & old age people. (v) Project title : Development of safety work-wear for fuel filling station attendants by chemical finishing treatment. Name of sponsoring : UGC, New Delhi Objectives : To carry out survey in Delhi and NCR region to understand the type of work-wear being used for fuel filling attendants. Collection of present work-wear and testing to understand, type of fibres being used, weave particulars, comfort, durability and safety (Flame retardant) properties Manufacturing of different woven fabric samples by varying weave design and weave particular and evaluating various physico-chemical properties like weave particulars, air permeability, water vapour permeability, oil repellency etc. To finish suitable woven fabric with FR and oil repellent finishing chemicals

Evaluation of chemical finished sample for safety, durability and comfort properties and selection of suitable sample. Development of work-wear for men and women fuel filling attendants with the selected sample having good safety, durability and comfort properties Field trial of the developed work-wear (vi) Project title : Development of electronic drape meter based on image analysis technique Name of sponsoring : Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India Objectives : To develop an instrument to measure fabric drape using image analysis principle To measure the accuracy of the developed instrument (vii) Project title : Development of an adsorbent for removal of color from textile effluents Name of sponsoring : Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India Objectives : To develop an adsorbent material selective for a range of dyes used in textile industry. To study the properties of the developed material like its composition, adsorption capacity, chemical/thermal stability hydrolysis, water regain etc. Application of the developed material for removal of color from textile effluent. To optimize process parameters like feed compositon, ph, flow rate, temprature, etc. To search for a suitable eluent for regeneration of the adsorbent material for its reuse. (viii)project title : Developing cost effective process for manufacturing pashmina wool blended yarn on cotton spinning system using nylon/pva as carrier fibre Objectives : Literature survey and study on properties of pashmina fibre, and prevailing practices of spinning. Procurement of fibre compatible to pashmina like nylon staple fibre and PVA fibre Development of yarn on cotton spinning system and optimisation of key process parameters Comparative evaluation of the yarn and fabric properties made out of conventional yarn and developed yarn Comparative evaluation of cost benefit analysis

(ix) Project title : Electrospun nanofibre web in water filtration application Objectives : To synthesize polymer nanofibres and nanomaterials based membranes, spin by an innovative electro spinning. Development of next generation membranes with highflux, high retention, energy saving, and durability. (x) Project title : Proposal for undertaking development of energy performance measurement and monitoring system for textile industry. Objectives : To assess energy performance of facilities, equipment, system, process and persons. To generate reports as per the national and international standards. To create a databank of energy consumption data for verification and reporting of energy conservation measures.
