Ohio Department of Transportation Office of Traffic Engineering October 20, 2006 To Holders of the ODOT Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM), the Sign Design Manual (SDM) and the OTE Standard Construction Drawings (SCDs): As of October 20, 2006, the Traffic Engineering Manual (TEM) and the Sign Design Manual (SDM), Section 295-2 of the TEM but published separately, have been revised. This revision involves Parts 3 (Markings), 4 (Traffic Signals), 6 (Temporary Traffic Control), 8 (Railroad-Highway Grade Crossings) and 12 (Miscellaneous) of the TEM, as well as the Regulatory Chapter and Appendices A and C of the SDM. As of October 20, 2006, three Traffic Standard Construction Drawings (SCDs) have also been revised. This revision involves only minor revisions in MT drawings issued September 5, 2006. The updated publications and the separate TEM, SDM and SCD revision packages are available from the links below, the ODOT Design Reference Resource Center (http://www.dot.state.oh.us/drrc/), or from the Office of Traffic Engineerings Home Page (http://www.dot.state.oh.us/traffic/), using the Publications/Documents link. Each revision package includes a detailed Revision Log. The TEM and SDM Revision packages are set up to print double-sided sheets. TEM Part 12 is being replaced completely; however, the other TEM and SDM revisions involve individual sheets or groups of pages. The pages should be printed and inserted into your manual by page number (or sign code number). The SCD Revision package is set up to print single-sided. The individual drawings are arranged by number. Per ODOT policy, paper copies of the publications are no longer distributed to all holders. Revisions will only be available via the web pages noted above. For questions, comments, or concerns please contact either: Juanita Elliott, P.E., Traffic Standards Engineer or Lisa McConnell, Traffic Standards Technician (614-644-8143 or Juanita.Elliott@dot.state.oh.us) (614-728-9361 or Lisa.McConnell@dot.state.oh.us) TEM SDM OTE SCDs Whats New Page Traffic Home Page October 20, 2006 Revision Package for the TEM, includes Revision Log October 20, 2006 Revision Package for the SCDs and PIS, includes Revision Log

Standard Arrow for ODOT Guide Signs The standard arrow details on the previous page are from the FHWA Standard Highway Signs manual. The tables provide dimensions based on the shaft width (dimension A). Once the shaft width is selected, all other arrow components (except shaft length) are proportional, as shown in the table. The formulas used to generate the values in the table are as follows: B = 1.150A C = 2.030A D = 0.155A E = 0.200A To provide consistency between designs, and to simplify sign layout and fabrication, ODOT has standardized on several standard arrow shaft widths, and used these repeatedly on Guide Sign designs. The most common standard arrow shaft widths used on ODOT Guide Signs are 1.75, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.5 inches. As stated above, the shaft length is not established in the FHWA design. Shaft length is typically in the range of three to five times the shaft width. Shorter shaft lengths would generally be used when the standard arrow is placed in a vertical or slanted orientation, or when the arrow is placed at the end of a line of text. Longer shaft lengths would generally be used when the standard arrow is placed horizontally at the bottom of the sign. To provide consistency between designs, ODOT has standardized on two shaft lengths for each of the shaft widths shown above. These are shown in the table below: Standard Arrow Shaft Lengths Based on Shaft Width Shaft length for vertical or slanted orientation, or when placed at the end of a line of text Shaft Width (inches) 1.75 2.5 3.0 4.5 5.5 8 12 18 Shaft length for horizontal orientation at the bottom of a sign 8 12 15 22.5 Standard Arrow Placement in SignCAD When placing standard arrows on signs using the SignCAD software, use the Standard Arrow feature, and set the parameters as follows: Standard Arrow Dimensions for SignCAD Shaft Width (inches) SignCAD Parameter Formula 1.75 2.5 3.0 4.5 Head width 2B + 2E = 2.70A 4.725 6.75 8.1 12.15 Head length C + E = 2.23A 3.9025 5.575 6.69 10.035 Radius E = 0.20A 0.35 0.5 0.6 0.9 Draft E = 0.20A 0.35 0.5 0.6 0.9 Shaft A 1.75 2.5 3 4.5 Length Vertical or slanted orientation, or when placed at the end of a line of text 5.5 8 12 18 Horizontal orientation at the bottom of a sign 8 12 15 22.5 Revised 10/20/06

SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION The purpose of this appendix is to provide information regarding the design and fabrication of designable guide signs. These are guide signs which do not have a standard, uniform size. The height and width of these signs are variable. The overall size of guide signs on freeways, expressways, ramps and approaches thereto is determined by the size of the sign elements. The element sizes are grouped by the level of signing. The appropriate level of signing is determined from Table 1-1. The appropriate element sizes are shown in Table 1-2. Each element or element grouping has minimum spacing requirements. The element sizes, when used with the appropriate horizontal and vertical spacings between elements, and edge spacing factors, determine the overall size of the guide sign. Please note that the letters and numbers shown throughout this appendix are intended to be representative of the alphabets used on designable guide signs, although they are not necessarily identical in appearance to those that would actually be used on a sign. The character set was chosen for its ease of use in CADD drawing in the development of this appendix. The alphabets shown in the example layouts are for illustrative purposes only. The size and shape of the individual letters and numbers will be slightly different on a completed sign. Information regarding the use of alphabets on designable guide signs in contained in Section 2. Revised October 20, 2006 1.1 Appendix C
