SECTION 12345.1 - MODULAR STEEL LABORATORY CASEWORK 1 PART 1 PRODUCTS 1.01 MANUFACTURER A. Casework and equipment manufacturer: ALIR Systems, Inc., 245 Harrison St, Jamestown, New York, 14701. 1.02 CASEWORK MATERIALS A. Sheet steel: Mild, cold rolled and leveled unfinished steel. B. Gauges of metal used in construction of cases shall be: C. 20 gauge: Door and drawer interior panels, security panels, removable back panel, scribing strips, filler panels, soffits and slopping tops. D. 20 gauge: Drawer bodies, exterior drawer/door panels and shelves E. 18 gauge: Outer Door and Drawer pan, Case tops, ends, bottoms, top front rail, internal front posts, backs, concealed cross rail, vertical center rail, and aprons. F. 16 gauge: Top rail reinforcement, sub-base, table legs and frames. G. 10 gauge: leveling gussets H. STAINLESS STEEL SPEC IS THE SAME BUT WITH A #3 or #4 SATIN FINISH WITH TYPE #302 STAINLESS 1.03 CASEWORK FABRICATION A. Base Units and Cases: 1. Base units, 35 ½, 28, and 24 3/8 high: Die formed 18 gauge furniture quality steel fabricated as a complete and integral unit, reinforced with internal front posts and a 16 gauge internal top rail on all cases greater than 24 in width. Integral bottom, bottom back and top back with (1) removable access panel in (door units) or (2) panels in (side-by-side combination units.) Sink cabinets are identical, except exclude top back. 2. Wall 24, 31 ½, and 36" high and tall cases 84" high: Die formed 18 gauge furniture quality steel fabricated as a complete and integral unit, reinforced with internal front posts. Back shall be formed steel panel and sides shall extend past cabinet back ¾ providing recess for imperfections in wall without scribe strips. Bottom to have provisions for task lights. 3. Posts: Front post fully closed with full height reinforcing upright. Shelf adjustment holes in front and rear posts shall be perfectly aligned for level setting, adjustable to 1/2" o.c. Indicator holes shall be provided every 3 ½ for easy shelf adjustment. 4. Bottoms: Base units, wall units and tall cases shall have one piece bottom with front edge formed into front rail, rabbeted as required for swinging doors and drawers and flush design for sliding doors. Holes or capped punch-outs for leveling screw access are not acceptable. 5. Backs: provide fixed backs in sliding door base units, wall units and tall units. Provide drawer units without backs. Cupboard units shall have removable back panels. (Vermin proof spec: drawer units to receive removable backs as well) 6. Top rail for base units: 18-gauge unit shall interlock with end panels, flush with front of unit. All cases grater than 24 wide shall be reinforced with 16-gauge reinforcement channel. 7. Horizontal intermediate rails: Recessed behind doors and drawer fronts; pre painted and removable for later revisions in cabinet configuration. Horizontal intermediate rails painted post installation leave exposed metal on case when reconfigured and therefore are not acceptable. 8. Integral sub bases for base and tall units providing 4 high x 3 deep toe kick. Sub base has 13 gauge welding leveling gussets at corners. Cases are provided with [4] 3/8 diameter leveling 9. screws with access holes on inside of cabinet for ease of leveling cabinets. Access holes are provided with plug buttons to be installed after case is level. 10. Tops of wall cases: One piece, with front edge formed into front rail. B. DRAWERS:

SECTION 12345.1 - MODULAR STEEL LABORATORY CASEWORK 2 1. Drawer fronts: 3/4" thick, double wall construction, prepainted prior to assembly and sound deadened. (Optional wood and laminate drawer fronts) 2. Drawer bodies: Bottom back and sides formed into one-piece construction with top edges formed and exterior flanges at front for attachment of drawer front leaving no exposed fasteners in drawer interior (No tool required for removal of drawer.) 3. Drawer Suspension: Removable, self-closing, bottom mount pre-epoxy coated with captive roller and positive in stop. Slide shall have 125 lbs dynamic, 150 lbs. static load per pair rating, must be self-closing within last 3 of travel, and must prevent drawer fronts from contacting the cabinet body. Suspension must carry manufactures lifetime warranty. On file drawers provide: Removable, full extension (3-member) ball bearing drawer guides, 100 lbs. dynamic, 150 lbs. static load per pair rating. Suspension must carry manufactures lifetime warranty. (Optional on all cases) 4. Provide drawer with rubber bumpers. 5. Provide security panels for drawers with keyed different locks (as required). I. DOORS: 1. Solid panel doors: 3/4" thick, double wall, telescoping box steel construction with interior sound deadening; all outer corners fitted smooth. Reinforce interior of front panel with welded angle. Secure hinges with screws to internal front posts at case and taped inner door leaf. Hinges shall be removable; welding of hinges not acceptable. Doors shall close against rubber bumpers. (Optional wood and laminate drawer fronts) 2. Frame glazed doors: Outer head to be one piece construction. Inner head to consist of top, bottom and side framing members which are removable for installation or replacement of glass. Provide vinyl glazing retainer to receive glass. In all other respects, framed glazed door construction and quality shall match solid panel doors. 3. Sliding doors - solid or framed glazed: Design for tilt-out removal. Doors shall ride on nylon tired sleeve bearing rollers in aluminum extended bottom track and shall close against rubber bumpers. 4. Unframed sliding glass doors: Glass with edges ground set in extruded aluminum shoe with attached translucent pull (top and bottom extruded aluminum track). Provide rubber bumpers at fully opened and closed door position. J. SHELVES: 1. Form front and back edges down and back ¾. Form ends down ¾. 2. Reinforce shelves over 36 long with welded angle reinforcement the full width of shelf 3. Pull out shelves: same suspension as specified for drawers. K. HARDWARE: 1. Drawer and door pulls: 4 natural aluminum wire pull offering a comfortable hand grip, and securely fastened to doors and drawers. 2. Flush pulls: shall be contemporary style, recessed into panel cavity from surface of outer pan. 3. Hinges: institutional type, 5-knuckle projecting barrel hinges with hospital tips. Minimum 2-1/2 long, 13 gauge, type 302 or 304 stainless steel. Hinges to have brushed satin finish and shall be attached to both door and case with three (3) screws through each leaf. Welding of hinges to door case shall not be accepted. Doors 36" and under in height shall be hung on one pair of hinges, and doors 42" and taller shall be hung on 1-1/2 pair of hinges. 4. Removable core locks: can be keyed alike or different, and grand-master-keyed as directed. 5. Friction catches: for doors shall be spring actuated, nylon roller type, adjustable with strike. 6. Shelf adjustment clips: Die formed, zinc plated steel designed to engage in shelf adjustment holes.

Sink supports: Sink supports shall be hanger type, suspended from top front and top rear horizontal rails of sink cabinet by four (4) 1/4" dia. rods, threaded at bottom end and offset at top to hang from two full length reinforcements welded to the front and rear top rails. Two 3/4" x 1-1/2 x 10 gauge channels shall be hung on the threaded rods to provide an adjustable sink cradle for supporting sinks. When sink capacity exceeds 3,750 cu. in., the sink supports shall be suspended from full length reinforcements welded to the two end rails. Two 1" x 2" x 10 gauge full length channels shall be hung from the four 1/4" dia. rods to provide an alternate sink cradle. 1.04 TABLE FRAMES A. Table frames: 3 3/4 high C channel front and back aprons, end rails and cross rails. ii. Table drawers: Provide front and back rails; drawer unit, hardware and suspension same as specified for base unit drawers. iii. Legs: 2 x 2 steel tube legs with welded leg bracket. Attach legs with 2 bolts to front and back aprons and weld to end rails. iv. Leg shoes: shall be provided on all table legs, unless otherwise specified, to conceal leveling device. Shoes shall be pliable, black vinyl material. Use of a leg shoe that does not conceal leveling device shall not be acceptable. 1.05 METAL FINISH A. Preparation: Spray clean with a heated cleaner/phosphate solution, pretreat with iron phosphate spray, water rinse and neutral final seal. Immediately dry in heated ovens, gradually cooled, prior to application of finish. L. Application: Electrostatically apply powder coat of selected color and bake in controlled high temperature oven to assure a smooth, hard, finish. Surfaces shall have a chemical resistant, high grade laboratory furniture quality finish of the following thickness: 1. Exterior and interior surfaces exposed to view: 1.5 mil average and 1.2 mil minimum. 2. backs of cabinets and other surfaces not exposed to view: 1.0 mil average C. Finish drawer bodies, inner door and drawer pans, sub bases, removable backs and concealed cross rails in harmonizing color. PART 2 EXECUTION 2.01 INSTALLATION A. Casework installation: 1. Set casework components plumb, square, and straight with no distortion and securely anchored to building structure. Shim as required using concealed shims or integral adjustment mechanisms. 2. Bolt continuous cabinets together with joints flush, tight and uniform, and with alignment of adjacent units within 1/16" tolerance. 3. Secure wall cabinets to solid supporting material, not to plaster, lath or gypsum board. M. Abut top edge surfaces in one true plane. Provide flush joints not to exceed 1/8" between top units. B. Work surface installation: 1. Where required due to field conditions, scribe to abutting surfaces. 2. Only factory prepared field joints, located per approved shop drawings, shall be permitted. Secure joints in field, where practicable, in the same manner as in factory, with dowels, splines, adhesive or fasteners recommended by manufacturer. a. Secure work surfaces to casework and equipment components with material and procedures recommended by the manufacturer.

Sink installation: Sinks which were not factory installed shall be set in chemical resistant sealing compound and secured and supported per manufacturer's recommendations. O. Accessory installation: Install accessories and fittings in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. Turn screws to seat flat; do not drive. 2.02 ADJUSTING A. Repair or remove and replace defective work, as directed by [Architect] [Owner] upon completion of installation. B. Adjust doors, drawers, hardware, fixtures and other moving or operating parts to function smoothly. 2.03 CLEANING A. Clean shop finished casework, touch up as required. B. Clean counter tops with diluted dishwashing liquid and water leaving tops free of all grease and streaks. Use no wax or oils. 2.04 PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK A. Take protective measures to prevent exposure of casework and equipment from exposure to other construction activity. B. Advise contractor of procedures and precautions for protection of material, installed laboratory casework and fixtures from damage by work of other trades. END OF SECTION 12345.1 ALIR SYSTEMS, INC. Subject to provisions of warranty, manufacturer agrees to repair or replace nonconforming products or its parts or refund the purchase price, at the manufacturer s option, for the warranty period following Substantial Completion.
