Meet President Richard Ham It was Monday, July 6, 2015, and President Richard Ham was our greeter as we entered the meeting room, where we encountered Mark Lipps at the podium, engaging in an extended roast and toast of President Rich (one year early, it seems) by way of introducing our new president. After his hilarious filibuster (he told us Rich s mentors are Napoleon, General Custer, and the Captain of the Titanic), complete with mostly irrelevant slides, Mark left the podium (and left us laughing) so that President Rich could finally take over Guests included MaryRose Jeffry, jealous not to be with husband Tom Jeffry, who happened to be back east on business and thus able to visit their new grandson, Parker, via son Adam, in Rochester, New York. (She also told us that their daughter Meg just bought her first home, in Chicago just two blocks from Paul Harris (yes, that Paul Harris) mansion..also present were President Rich s wife Judy, son Jason and brother Dwight. Money, Money, Money President Rich told us that Magic In Giving netted $127,000 and praised Jan Rhees for her leadership.shannon Ryan emphasized the importance to the club (both financially and in the community) for us to purchase tickets for the July 23 Host Town Committee picnic at Polliwog Park to mix and mingle with the athletes from Hungary and Nepal.Vinny Fazzino invited us to join him in taking the Casa Hogar kids camping the weekend of July 24-25..You may recall that

Past President Geoff Bremer promised to match the Happy Dollars contributed at his last meeting, and he came through, writing a check for $310 to the Club Foundation s new permanent endowment. Be A Gift To The World Our speaker today, in accordance with tradition, was our new president, Richard Ham (I will normally call him President Rich, but let s go with Rich just for today). Rich came with Powerpoint and slides with photos, and Donn Ennis got all of it on his Facebook post, but here s an overview: He first wanted us to know why this club is so good, mentioning good company, giving, involvement, helping others, fun, networking, friendship and leadership. He reminded us that the club s membership is close to full, and to check out any prospects with Ian Jackson first. He said his vision for the club year is to Be a gift to the world. He introduced our directors and chairs and said the club year will be much like the past year, with emphasis on Magic In Giving, members, publicity and the Club Foundation. He specifically noted that Larry Johnson is working on a million dollars in grants for Wells Bring Hope through the club, the district, RI and World Vision. He also has a new award planned for RI s Vocational Service month, October, when a club member will be named Vocational Person of the Year. A Brief Richard Ham Biography Rich also had a few words about himself. Raised in the San Fernando Valley, he went to Van Nuys High School with Dick Chase. Through

CSU Northridge and USC he obtained a BS in Physical Chemistry, but then got into computers and gave up ambitions for a PhD. He worked for Rockwell, TRW, Logicon and Aerospace Corporation (where his supervisor for a while was Wade Austin s wife Wanda Wanda is now the president, by the way). He did things like software development for satellites, working on a nuclear fuel reactor housing, B-1 bomber avionics, the Minuteman 3 (he commanded a launch at Vandenberg AFB), military satellites, and more (none of which I understand). On the side, he successfully invested in real estate. Rotarian Richard Ham Rich joined our club in 2007 and has been Program Chair, Vocational, Community, International, President-Elect and now President, and recently chaired the District s Guatemala Humanitarian trip. With all he does with his life, it s hard to see where Rotary can possibly fit in, but it so clearly does. With all he does with his life, one has to take a grain of salt with his closing line, and yet his history with this club makes his closing line convincing. Rich closed this talk, and this meeting, by telling us simply, Rotary is my life. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett Mark Burton On July 7, 2015, Mark Burton became the Mayor of Manhattan Beach in a ceremony at the start of a regular City Council meeting in the beautiful City Council chambers. The event was attended by approximately 30 of his fellow Rotarians, by far the largest contingent there, and Mark acknowledged our presence there and even pitched the club, saying, If you ever get the chance to join this club, do it. The evening started with local musician Kevin Sousa singing his new song, I love MB, based on Randy Newman s I love LA. The song was promptly declared the City s Song by outgoing Mayor Wayne Powell. Mark laid out a very detailed plan for his 9+ months as Mayor and received multiple standing ovations from his family, friends and City folks who joined Rotarians in enthusiastic welcome to his new post.

RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the quiet revolution of hope. Isn t it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place. How Well Do You Know Your Piers? The first Manhattan Beach Pier was all wood construction and built in 1902. It was destroyed in a storm in 1913. The second (and current) Manhattan Beach Pier was completed in 1920. The Roundhouse on the pier was finished in 1922 The Manhattan Beach Pier was declared a California Historical Landmark in 1995. Share The Rotary Bulletin Include your spouse!
