Your muter has been shpped completely assembled and ready for use. Inspect t car fully to make sure no breakage or damage has occurred durng shppng. If any parts are damaged or mssng, contact your nearest Sears Retal Store to obtan replacement parts before attemptng to operate router. A wrench and ths owner's manual are also ncluded. SWITCH T_otum your router ON, depress the swtch trgger. Release swtch trgger to turn your router OFF. LOCK-ON BUTTON The swtch of your router s equpped wth a lock-on feature whch s convenent when operatng for extended perods of tme. To lock on, depress the trgger, push nthe lock button located on the sde of the handle, then whle holdngthe lock button pushed n, release the trgger. To release the lock, depress the trgger and release t. Before connectng your router to power supply sour e, always check to be sure t s not n lock-on poston (depress and release swtch trgger). Falure to do so could result n accdental startng of your muter resultng n possble serous njury. Also, do not lock the trgger on jobs where your muter may need to be stopped suddenly. CHIP SHIELD A clear plastc chp sheld s nstalled on the front of your router for protectonaganst flyng dust and chps. The sheld sdesgned to ft the openng of the muter base. If necessary to remove chp sheld, squeeze the tabs on each end and pull outward. To replace, squeeze the tabs at each end, ft nto -openng, thenrelease. NOTE: Model No. 315.175060 has a chp sheld on the front and rear openng of the router base. For your protecton, do not use router wthout chp sh!eld(s) properly n place. Ifdesred, the horsepower label can be removed from chp sheld by smply peelng off. WRENCH STORAGE AREA Your router has a wrench storage area located onthe topend cap porton of the motor IlOusng.When nstallng orremovng cutters, remove the wrench from ts storage area. Proper storage of wrench when not n use wll help reduce the possblty of losng wrench. VARIABLE SPEED SWITCH WITH ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROL (MODEL NOS. 315.175050 AND 315.175060 ONLY) See Fgures lb and lc. The varable speed control allows the router speed to be adjusted from 15,000 to 25,000 rpm. The varable speed control selector s convenently located outsde the rght handle near the operator's thumb or hand. The best cuts are made when the cutter s fed thr ugh materal at the proper rate of feed. DUST BAG ASSEMBLY (MODEL NO. 315.175060 ONLY) See Fgure lc. The dust bag located on the sde of your muter provdes a dust collecton system for your router. For more effcent operaton, empty dust bag when half full. Do not connect r uterto power supply before nstallng dust bag or connectng t to a dust collecton system. To prevent the possblty of sawdust or foregn objects beng thrwn nto your face and eyes, never attempt to use your router wthout dust bag propedy nstalled. TO INSTALL DUST BAG: The dust bag should be nstalled by slpp_j t v_th a twstng moton over the blower exhaust. The bag should be nstalled wth the zpper down when router s n uprght postor. TO EMPTY DUST BAG: Remove dust bag from router, open zpper and shake out dust. Occasonally turn the dust bag nsde out and brash the accumulaton of dust from the nsde of the bag. The shank of your Cutter should be close to but not touchng bottom of collet. Tghten the collet nut securely by turnng clockwse.,._wth_be wrench provded. See Fgure 3. DEPTH OF CUT ADJUSTMENTS See Fgures 4, 5, _nd 6. We recommend that cuts be made at a depth not exceedng 118n. and that several passes be made to reach depths of cut [u greater than 118 n. uoo startng causng serous njury.! Falure to unplug your router could result n accdental Place your router on a fat surface, loosen lockng knob, and tum depth adjustng rng untl cutter s nsde -- _subbase. See Fgure 4. Tum depth adjustng rng untl tp of cutter touches fat surface. Tum the depth ndcator rng untl the zero lnes up wth the ndcator pont on the base. NOTE: The depth ndcator dng s also a zero reset ndcator when settng cutter at zero depth of cut, then t becomes the depth adjustng rng. See Fgure 5. Poston your router so that the cutter can extend below the subbase for desred depth settng. See Fgure 6. Tum the depth adjustng rng to obtanthe desred depth of cut. DEPTH OF CUT ADJUSTMENTS WHEN ROUTER IS MOUNTED TO A ROUTER TABLE See Fgure 7. The depth of cut s readable from both sdes of the depth ndcator rng. The bottom rng s convenent when usng your router mounted upsde down to a router table. The ndcator pont on the base can also be used when usng your router mounted to a router table. Set the cutter at zero depth of cut, rotate depth ndcator rng to desred depth of cut on the scale, then tghten lockng knob securely. VARIABLE SPEED (MODEL NOS. 315.175050 AND 315.175060) See Fgure 8. If your router s ether one of these two models, t has a varable speed control selector desgned to allow operator control of speed and torque lmts. To ncrease the speed and torque of your router, tum the varable speed controlselector to a hgher settng. Turn to a lower settng to decrease speed and torque. NOTE: If you do not want to use the varable speed control selector, turn to the hghest possble settng and the feature wll not be actve. PRACTICE BEFORE ACTUAL USE If your router s Model No. 315.175050 or 315.175060, we suggest that you practce wth the vadable speed feature of your router before nstallng a cutter and makng cuts n wood. Check the followng before connectng your router to power supply. Make sure power supply s 120 volts, 60 Hz, AC only. Make sure the spndle lock s n the unlocked poston. / Make sure the _gger s not n the lock-on poston. Make sure there s not a cutter n the collet. Make sure the collet does not extend below the subbase. Choose the desred speed from the speed selecton chart. See Fgure 8. Turn the varable speed control selector to the desred settng. Reman alert and watch what you are dong. DO NOT operate router when fatgued. FREEHAND ROUTING See Fgure 10. When used freehand, your router becomes a flexble and V-ersatlletool. Ths flexblty makes t possble to easly rout sgns, relef sculptures, etc. There are two basc technques for freehand routng:. Routng letters, grooves, and pattems nto wood. See Fgure 10. Routng out the background, leavng the letters or pattem rased above the surface. When freehand routng, we suggest the followng: Draw or layout the pattem on workpece. Choose the approprate cutter. NOTE: A core box or V-groove bt s often used for routng letters and engravng objects. Straght bts and ball mllsare often used to make relef carvngs. Venng bts are used to carve small, ntrcate detals. Rout the pattem n two or more passes. Make the frst pass at 25% of the desred depth of cut. Ths wll provde better control as well as beng a gude for the next pass. DO NOT rout deeper than 1/8 n. per pass or cut. POWER HANDLE Fg. 9 Page 13
PROPER FEED.ING The rght feed s nether too fast nor too slow. It s the rate at whch the bt s beng advanced frmly and surely to produce a contnuous spral of unform chps --wthout hoggng nto the wood to make large ndvdualchps or, on the other hand, to create only sawdust. If you are makng a small dameter, shallow groove n soft, dry wood, the proper feed may be about as fast as you can travel your router along your gude lne. On the other hand, fthe bts a large one, the cut sdeep orthe wood s hard to cut, the proper feed may be a very slow one. Then, agan, a cross-gran cut may requre a slower pace than an dentcal wth gran cut n the same workpece. There-s no fxed rule. You wll learn by experence.., by lstenng to the router motor and by feelng the progress of each cut. If at all possble, always test a cut on a scrap pece of the workpece wood, beforehand. SPEED SELECTION (MODEL NOS. 315.175050 AND 315.175060 ONLY) In general, f the materal beng cut s hard, the cutter sze s largel orthe depth of cut s deep (maxmum 118n.), then your router should be run at slower speeds. When these stuatons exst, turn the varable speed control selector untl the desred speed s reached. NOTE: Carbde cutters cut at hgher speeds than steel cutters and should be used when cuttng very hard materals. RATE OF FEED IMPORTANT: The whole "secret" of professonal routng and edge shapng les n makng a careful set-up for the cut to be made and n selectng the proper rate of feed. FORCE FEEDING Clean, smooth routng and edge shapng can be done only when the bt s revolvng at a relatvely hgh speed and s takng very small btes to produce tny, cleanly severed chps. If your router s forced to move forward too fast, the RPM of the bt becomes slower than normal n relaton to ts forward movement. As a result, the bt must take bgger btes as t revolves. =Bgger btes" mean bgger chps, and a rougher fnsh. Bgger chps also requre more power, whch could result n the router motor becomng overloaded. Under extreme force-feedng condtons the relatve RPM of the bt can become so slow --and the btes t has to-take so large -- that chps wll be partally knocked off (rather than fully cut off), wth redoitng splnterng and gougng of the workpece. See Fgure 11. Your Craftsman Router s an extremely hgh-speed tool, and wll make clean, smooth cuts f allowed to run freely wthout the overload of a forced (too fast) feed. Three thngs that cause =force feedng" are bt sze, depth-of_ut, and workpece characterstcs. The larger the bt or the deeper the cut, the more slowly the router should be moved forward. If the wood s very hard, knotty, gummy or damp, the operaton must be "_q!_ed:b-'tllmore. TOO FAST TOO SLOW Fg. 11 You can always detect "rome feedng" by the sound of the motor. Its hgh-ptched whne wll sound lower and stronger as t loses speed. Also, the stran of holdng the tool wll be notceably ncreased. TOO SLOW FEEDING It s also possble to spol a cut by movng the router forward too slowly. When t s advanced nto the work too slowly, a revolvng bt does not dg ntonew wood fast enough to take a bte; nstead, t smply scrapes away sawdust-lke partcles. Scrapng produces heat, whch can glaze, bum, or mar the cut--n extreme cases, can even overheat the bt so as to destroy ts hardness. In addton, t s more dffcultto control a router when the bt s scrapng nstead of cuttng. Wth practcally no load on the motor the bt wll be revolvng at close to top RPM, and wll have a much greater than normal tendency to bounce offthe sdes of the cut (especally, f the wood has a pronounced gran wth hard and soft areas). As a result,the cut produced may have dppled, nstead of straght sdes. S_eeFgure 11. ='l'oo-slow feedng" can also cause your router to take off n a wrong drecton from the ntended lne of cut. Always grasp and hold your router frmly wth both hands when rouung. You can detect'too-slow feedng" by the runaway too-hghly ptched sound of the motor; or by feelng the "wggle" of the bt n the cut. DEPTH OF CUT As prevously mentoned, the depth of cut s mportant because t affects the rate of feed whch, n turn, affects the qualty of a cut (and, also, the possblty of damage to your router motor and bt). A deep cut requres a slower feed than a shallow one, and a too deep cut wll cause you to slow the feed so much that the bt s no longer cuttng, t s scrapng, nstead. Makng a deep cut s never advsable. The smaller bts especally those only 1/16 nch n dameter -- are easly broken off when subjected to too much sde thrust. A large enough bt may not be broken off, but f the cut s too deep a roughcut wll resulte and t may be very dffcultto gude and control the bt as desred. For these reasons, we recommend that you do not exceed 1/8 nch depth of cut na sngle pass, regardless of the bt sze or the softness or condton of the workpece. See Fgure 12. To make deeper cuts t s therefore necessary to make as many successve passes as requred, lowerng the bt 1/8 nch for each new pass. In order to save tme, do all the cuttng necessary at one depth settng, before lowerng the bt for the next pass. Ths wll also assure a unform depth when the fnal pass s completed. See Fgure 13. DIRECTION OF FEED AND THRUST The router motorand bt revolve na clockwse drecton. Ths gves the tool a slght tendency to twst (n your hands) n a counterclockwse drecton, especally when the motor s startng up. Because of the extremely hgh speed of bt rotaton durng a "proper feedng" operaton, there s very lttle kckback to contend wth under normal condtons. However, should the bt strke a knot, hard gran, foregn object, etc. that would affect the normal progress of the cuttng acton, there wll be a slght kckback-- suffcentto spolthe trueness of your cut f you are not prepared. Such a kckback s always n the drecton opposte to the drecton of bt rotaton. Toguard ag._tlst such a kckback, plan your set-up and drecton of feed so that you wll always be thrustng the tool to hold t aganst whatever you are usng to gude the cut m n the same drecton that the leadng edge of the bt s movng. In shod, when the gude s postoned as shown n the frst part of Fgure 14, tool travel should be left to dght and counterclockwse around curves. When the gude s postoned as shown n the secondpart of Fgure 14 tool travel should be rght to left and clockwse around curves. If there s a choce, the frst set-up s generally the easest to use. In ether case, the sdeways thrust you use s aganst the gude. Page15

TOPEDGESHAPING Upon completon of cut, turn motor off and let t come to a complete stop before removng router from work surface. ROUTER WORK GUIDE I Never pull router out of work and place upsde down on work surface before the cutter stops. EDGING WITH PILOT BITS The arbor-type bts wth plots are excellent for quck, easy, edge shapng of any workpece edge that sether straght or curved at a curvature as great or greater than the radus of the bt to be used. The plot prevents the bt from makng too deep a cut; and holdng the plot frmly n contact wth the workpece edge throughout prevents the cut from becomng too shallow. Whenever the workpece thckness together wththe desred depth of cut (as adjusted by router depth settng) are such that only the top part of the edge s to be shaped (leavng at least a 1/16 nch thck uncut porton at bottom), the plot can rde aganst the uncut porton, whch wll serve to gude t. See Fgure 15. However, f the workpece s too thn or the bt set too low so that there wll be no uncut edge to rde the plotaganst, an extra board to act as a gude must be placed under the workpece. Ths =gude" board must have exactly the same contour -- straght or curved -- as the workpece edge. If t s postoned so that ts edge s flush.wth the workpece edge, the bt wll make a full cut (n as far as the bt radus). On the other hand, f the gude s postoned as shown n Fgure 15 (outfrom the workpece edge), the btwll make less than a full cut -- whch wll alter the shape of the fnshed edge. NOTE: Any of the ploted bts can be used wthout a plotfor edge shapng wth gudes, as precedng. The sze (dameter) of the plot that s used determnes the maxmum cut wdth that can be made wth the plot aganst the workpece edge (the small plot exposes all of the bt; the large one reduces arff_unt by 1/16 nch). ROUTING WITH GUIDE BUSHINGS When usng the Template Gude Bushngs Item No. 9-25082 wth your router, you must vsually center the bt wth the bushng before begnnng your cut. Your routersubbase may be adjusted by loosenng the screws holdng the subbase to your router. Be sure clampng lever s locked before centerng bt n bushng. After centerng bt wth bushng, tghten screws frmly. Falure to center bt wth bushng or to frmly tghten --screwsafter centerng couldcause bt to come n contact wth bushng resultng n serous njury. ROUTER TABLES The use of Craftsman routers on router tables offered by other manufacturers has not been nvestgated for complance wth applcable safety standards. Do not use wth router tables that fal to conform to safe wood workng practces and offer proper guardng for the cutter. Wth bulb (E) pontng toward you, push bulb n and tum to the left to remove from bulb socket. NOTE: Lght bulb removal and nstallaton s smlar to removng and nstallng a standard automotve bulb. Install new bulb by reversng the above procedure. Reassemble all parts and tghten screws securely. E B PROPER CARE OF CUTTERS Get faster and more accurate cuttng results by keepng cutters clean and sharp. Remove all accumulated ptch and gum from cutters after each use. PROPER CARE OF COLLET From tme to tme, t also becomes necessary to clean your collet and collet nut. To do so, smply remove collet nut from collet and clean the dust and chps that have collected. Then retum collet nut to ts odgnal poston. LUBRICATION All of the bearngs n ths tool are lubrcated wth a suffcent amount of hgh grade lubrcant for the lfe of the unt under normaloperatng condtons. I When electrc tools are used on fberglass boats, sports cars, wallboard, spacklng compounds, or plaster, t has been found that they are subject to accelerated wear and possble premature falure, as the fberglass chps and grndngs are hghly abrasve to bearngs, brushes, commutators, etc. Consequently t snot recommended that thstool be used for extended work on any fberglass materal, wallboard, spacklng compounds, or plaster. Durng any use on these materals, t s extremely mportant that the tool s cleaned frequently by blowng wth an ar jet. EXTENSION CORDS The usa of any extenson cord wllcause some loss of power. To keep the lossto a mnmumandto prevent tool overheatng, use an extenson cord that s heavy enough to carry the current the tool wll draw. A wre gage sze (A.W.G.) of at least 14 s recommended for an extenson cord 100 feet or less n length. When workng outdoors, use an extenson cord that s sutable for outdoor use.
