The Historic Morganton Festival, Inc. is partnering with Burke County Public Schools to offer a student technology competition during the 2018 Morganton Festival. MADE, which stands for Morganton Arts Design and Engineering, will engage local Middle School and High School aged students in an innovative competition designed to showcase desirable, employable skill sets. MADE Competition will take place on Saturday, September 8th during the Morganton Festival in downtown Morganton. This will be the inaugural year for the competition, which has the support and momentum to grow. While there have been many changes over the years, Morganton now finds itself with growing/expanding industry, a renewed focus on technology and engineering education and by 2021 will be the home to the North Carolina School of Science and Math s western campus. M.A.D.E. Eco Chair Challenge Design Brief - Kellex, a local manufacturer, is looking to develop a chair that they can easily be produced and manufactured in developing countries. Materials - Given the limited resource availability, the chair needs to be made with easily accessible materials. Given the growth of worldwide shipping, the manufacturer has decided the chair will be made with cardboard (which will be provided by a sponsor), a common water based glue and/or hot glue. Paint may be used as a top coat for protection and design. Constraints - It is of benefit (but not required) if the chair can be assembled on site with prefabricated parts without adhesives. (The parts can be easily assembled into the working chair.) - The chair needs to hold a 250 lb person of average height. - The chair s comfort is considered in the judging. - It should repel exposure to light rain. - Appearance and design are considered. Design should be based on a design era/ movement. Example: (Art Deco, Bauhaus, arts and crafts, 1920 s etc) - The chair should fit into a box that is 32 length X 32 width X 45 height - Each team is recommended to have four (4) members but may have up to eight (8) members. - Cardboard will be provided by Packaging Corporation of America. Each group will be given ten 8X4 sheets. Contact Abby Gentry to coordinate pickup. Artifacts to Submit - Due on Friday, September 7th - Design Portfolio that includes 1. Your design brief which should include a summary of chair design and use 2. Concept Sketches 3. Orthographic Drawing of final product using 3D CAD software 4. Parts Drawings using 3D CAD software 5. 1/8th scale 3D printed model 6. Designer s Log chronicling the progress and process of the design. 7. Final Product Judging Final product and design portfolio to be on display in the MADE (Morganton Arts Design & Engineering Tent - 111 North Green Street) at the Historic Morganton Festival on September 7th and 8th. Judging will take place on Saturday, September 8th at 10:00am. Teams must be on site to present their projects and address questions from the judges.
