Purchase and rganize a 3-ring binder and flder fr exclusive use in this class. REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT ONE: Handwritten ntes f Chapters 1-3 in Give Me Liberty RATIONALE: It is essential that cllege-bund students learn t interact with text in a psitive and prductive manner. Learning t identify key infrmatin in a text is a skill that will serve any student f the scial studies fr years t cme. Over the curse f this year yu will becme an expert at reading many pages f text and rganizing key infrmatin int an utline frmat f yur chsing. Mrever, the AP US Histry exam is incredibly thrugh, and students are ften tested n bth ppular and bscure knwledge f U.S. Histry. Since it is lgistically impssible fr yur instructrs t teach yu ALL f the material yu will need t knw t d well n the test, it is essential that yu carefully read yur entire textbk ver the curse f the year. SUMMER TASK: Read and take ntes n Chapters 1-3 in Give Me Liberty. Yur utlines may be created in any frmat yu chse, but they must cver all f the imprtant names, terms, etc. Yur utlines must be handwritten. I recmmend using a pen with black ink. While I recmmend using either a Harvard Outline r Crnell Ntes (just d a quick Ggle search and yu will find directins, if nt email me), yu are encuraged t find yur wn style fr nte taking. Whatever wrks best fr yu is the best chice. Make sure it is rganized. Quick nte D nt try t write dwn EVERYTHING in the textbk. Yu ntes are suppsed t summarize the text.

This assignment is due n the first day f schl: Thursday, August 21. Yu will als have a large quiz ver these three chapters n the secnd day f schl. REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT TWO: Tw t three page paper n majr theme f the curse. RATIONALE: Writing well is arguably the mst imprtant skill a student can acquire. Being able t write clear, rganized, and effective papers is essential fr further success in high schl, cllege, and beynd. Mrever, this AP US Histry class will demand a large amunt f writing frm each student. The curse will fcus n persuasive and expsitry writing, and students will need t answer three essay questins n the AP US Histry exam in May (4 shrt answer questins, 1 lng essay questin and ne Dcument-Based questin (DBQ)). SUMMER TASK Yur assignment fr the summer is t write ne tw-t-three page paper that answers ne (1) f the fllwing questins, which are based n the majr themes f this curse: 1. Describe the impact f Eurpeans n Native American (Indian) cultures and the impact f native cultures n Eurpeans. Then explain why it was r was nt psitive that Eurpean culture prevailed. 2. Select any cmbinatin f tw f the three clnial settlement areas (Suth, New England, middle) and cmpare and cntrast them. Fcus n the mtives f their funders, religius and scial rientatin, ecnmic pursuits, and plitical develpments. 3. Write yur definitin f prgress. Then use this definitin t demnstrate that the discvery f America did r did nt lead t prgress in human histry. Yur paper must be typed in Times New Rman 12 pint fnt, duble-spaced, with 1 inch margins, and a title page. REQUIRED ASSIGNMENT THREE: Chse ONE (1) bk frm the attached list and keep a reading lg. RATIONALE: Fr this particular class yu need t have sme srt f prir knwledge. On the AP exam in May yu will be required t draw n this prir knwledge when answering the DBQ and FRQs. SUMMER TASK: Fllw the prcedures belw fr yur reading jurnal: The directins make this lk like a really cmplicated assignment. I assure yu it is nt. It is just a way t get yu t think abut the bk yu are reading. Yu will be ding this assignment 4 mre times during the schl year (1 bk per quarter)

PROCEDURE: As yu read, chse passages that stand ut t yu and recrd them in the left-hand clumn f a T-chart (ALWAYS include page numbers). D a little research abut a few bks befre yu narrw it dwn t ne. In the right clumn, write yur respnse t the text (ideas/insights, questins, reflectins, and cmments n each passage) If yu chse, yu can label yur respnses using the fllwing cdes: (Q) Questin ask abut smething in the passage that is unclear (C) Cnnect make a cnnectin t yur life, the wrld, r anther text (P) Predict anticipate what will ccur based n what s in the passage (CL) Clarify answer earlier questins r cnfirm/disaffirm a predictin (R) Reflect think deeply abut what the passage means in a brad sense nt just t the characters in the stry. What cnclusins can yu draw abut the wrld, abut human nature, r just the way things wrk? (E) Evaluate - make a judgment abut the character(s), their actins, r what the authr is trying t say Yu need a minimum f 25 entries. Sample Dialectical Jurnal entry: THE THINGS THEY CARRIED by Tim O Brien (nt all entries need t be this lengthy) Passages frm the text Pg#s Cmments & Questins -they carried like freight trains; they carried it n their backs and shulders-and fr all the ambiguities f Vietnam, all the mysteries and unknwns, there was at least the single abiding certainty that they wuld never be at a lss fr things t carry. Pg 2 (R) O Brien chses t end the first sectin f the nvel with this sentence. He prvides excellent visual details f what each slider in Vietnam wuld carry fr day-t-day fighting. He makes yu feel the physical weight f what sldiers have t carry fr simple survival. When yu cmbine the emtinal weight f lved nes at hme, the fear f death, and the respnsibility fr the men yu fight with, with this physical weight, yu start t understand what sldiers in Vietnam dealt with every day.

CHOOSING PASSAGES FROM THE TEXT: Lk fr qutes that seem significant, pwerful, thught prvking r puzzling. Fr example, yu might recrd: Passages that remind yu f yur wn life r smething yu ve seen befre A passage that makes yu realize smething yu hadn t seen befre Examples f patterns: recurring images, ideas, clrs, symbls r mtifs. Passages with cnfusing language r unfamiliar vcabulary Events yu find surprising r cnfusing Passages that illustrate a particular character r setting RESPONDING TO THE TEXT: Yu can respnd t the text in a variety f ways. The mst imprtant thing t remember is that yur bservatins shuld be specific and detailed. Yu can write as much as yu want fr each entry. Yu can use lse-leaf paper fr yur jurnals. Basic Respnses Raise questins abut the beliefs and values implied in the text Give yur persnal reactins t the passage Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Tell what it reminds yu f frm yur wn experiences Write abut what it makes yu think r feel Agree r disagree with a character r the authr Higher Level Respnses Make cnnectins between different characters r events in the text Make cnnectins t a different text (r film, sng, etc ) Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Cnsider an event r descriptin frm the perspective f a different character Analyze a passage and its relatinship t the stry as a whle **************************

TOP 8 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND J 1. Enjy yur summer. One paper, three chapters f utlining and review questins, and reading a bk shuld nt cnsume yur free time. G utside, g t the pl, r make plans with friends. 2. Explre histry. If yu take a vacatin, see if yu can stp at a histrical marker alng the way. Or, d a little research abut the place yu are visiting. Take the time t start thinking histrically. 3. Read. Try t read several bks ver the curse f yur summer, in additin t the required ne. Yu will d a tn f reading in this class this year and if yu are nt in the habit f turning pages it will be much mre difficult t adjust. Becme an infrmed Junir Citizen! Read the newspaper (and nt just the sprts sectin!). Watch the news. Try t keep updated n the wrld s events. 5. Learn yur gegraphy.
