Kay Lynn Reilly www.kayreilly.com kaylynnreilly@gmail.com 435.668.3477 April 28, 2016 Dear Individualized Studies Committee Members, My educational evolution has been an intuitive journey of challenge, opportunity and endurance. Right out of high school I earned a certificate of completion from The Bryman School of Medical Assisting (1973). I worked in that capacity while earning my A.A. degree in Professional Photography (1977), until I started my own business in Wedding, Portrait and Fine Art Photography (1982). That business flourished and opened many doors for me throughout the 80 s and 90 s. My primary focus was high-end weddings in the Seattle area, which afforded me the opportunity to travel, exhibit and pursue personal photographic interests including Western landscape and rodeo. I had a chance meeting with Sue Copeland, editor in chief of Horse and Rider Magazine at one of my exhibits in Las Vegas during the National Finals Rodeo. She decided to do a feature story about me, and my hand-painted B&W rodeo photographs. They sent a writer from Los Angeles to my home in Seattle for the interview. I became their go-to photographer for a few years whenever they had an event in the Northwest or Western Canada. I won two 1st place photojournalism awards from American Horse Publications for the work I did with Horse and Rider. I also had photographs featured in AAA Travel Guide, St. George Magazine, and Elan Magazine. I was so blessed in that business for 26 years, but was not prepared for the meltdown of that industry. My business, which interlaced with every aspect of my life, became a casualty of the digital revolution and recession of 2008. Rather suddenly, I was out of work. Having no other significant skills outside of photography, I came to Dixie State College in 2009 in search of a path to re-invent myself. I was interested in art and also in nursing, but there was no foreseeable way to do both. Art would provide the opportunity to integrate with and expand upon my vast photographic skills, and seemed the most logical direction. The Integrated Studies program allowed me to pursue Art and Visual Technology, which I hoped would prepare me for a career in Graphic Design. 3
About halfway through my degree program, I became caregiver for my mother who was declining rapidly with Alzheimer s. It instilled in me a strong desire to work with individuals afflicted by dementia. Shortly after she passed away I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in ten years. I managed to stay in school through these setbacks. I happened to have all art classes during the three months of weekly chemo treatments. It was the only reason I left the house, outside of treatment and doctors. It was my salvation to be able to paint, and mold clay, and co-create with other artists. Art offered me an escape from some of the anguish of my daily life at that time. I experienced firsthand the power that art had on the mind/body to comfort and heal. The Individualized Studies degree offers the opportunity for me to connect my interests by using visual art and design skills to provide care to aging adults. I summarize this degree, which is unlike any other degree program at DSU, in the following mission statement. The mission of the B.I.S. in Creative Digital Therapeutic Support is: To prepare student entrepreneurs with a variety of design and technology skills for the development of aesthetic and sensory therapies to improve quality of life, comfort, and communication for the increasing at-need population of aging adults. This degree combines courses in psychology (PSYCH 1010), nursing (NURS 1005-1007), and interpersonal communication (COMM 2110) to build strategies and knowledge that serve to assist in geriatric care. Additionally, this degree builds skills in technical and visual design ( ART 3130 3D Design, ART 2270 Phenomenon of Color, ART 3430 Media Experimentation, VT 2500 Creative Imaging, VT 2600 Computer Illustration, DES 3300 Digital Video Editing) to aid with aesthetic and sensory therapies. Together, the combination of these courses articulate a coherent curriculum that enables students to provide a creative approach to therapeutic care designed to support comfort, communication and improved quality of life to the aging population. This degree incorporates the skills needed for small business development (ART 3800 Business of Art, WEB 3550 Internet / ecommece Marketing, DES 3800 Corporate Identity, VT 1300 Communication Design, and ENGL 3010 Writing in the Professions). In conclusion, the uniquely-designed thematic emphasis of Creative Digital Therapeutic Support will empower me in the pursuit of my post-graduate and 4
professional aspirations, beyond any other degree program currently offered at DSU. I thank you for your consideration, and look forward to your approval, feedback and guidance. Sincerely, Kay Lynn Reilly 5
