South End Historical Society 532 Massachusetts Avenue Boston, MA 02118 http://admin@southendhistoricalsociety.org The Richard O. Card Collection Creator: Richard O. Card Extent: 4.67 linear feet Languages: English Processing Archivist: Kristen Peterson, 2017 Repository: South End Historical Society Citation: Courtesy of the South End Historical Society: The Richard O. Card Collection. Conditions on Use and Access: Digitized copies of this collection are open for research. Certain materials, such as newspapers and atlases, are restricted and not open for research due to their fragile condition. Copyright: Copyright restrictions may apply. Provenance The contents of the Richard O. Card Collection were donated to the South End Historical Society in Boston in 1966-2000 by Richard O. Card, founding president of the South End Historical Society. Arrangement and Processing Notes The collection maintains Richard O. Card s original arrangement, organized by subject matter. The majority of the photographic collection is in its original binders, with each photograph glued to black construction paper, accompanied by a descriptive caption glued below each photograph. The original order of the binders has been altered due to combining two sets of binders into one collection. The collection will eventually need preservation care to detach each photograph from the construction paper and remove potentially harmful glue. Biographical/Historical Note As an early project to increase the recognition and visibility of the South End Historical Society, Richard O. Card created this collection for research and educational purposes. Richard O. Card is a founding member of the South End Historical Society, first president, and longtime historian and friend of the society. In additional to the vast inventory of photographs, his donations within the collection include a broad arrangement of objects of the South End and greater Boston spanning from the mid-19 th century to modern times, with many of the photographs taken by Richard himself. This collection will help the South End Historical Society in its continual efforts to document

the ever-changing landscape and architecture of the South End. The Richard O. Card Collection also includes books, ranging from historical texts about the city of Boston to a wide range of original texts and primary source documents dating as far back as the mid-19 th century including Boston city directories, almanacs, social registries, and pictorials. Other objects within the collection include maps, atlases, and pamphlets. These, paired with the multiple newspapers and a collection of Otis Everett letters dating from the 1850s, help to create an invaluable view of life in the South End from the mid-1800s to the end of the century. The South End Historical Society s strives to collect, preserve and promulgate the physical, social and intellectual history of the South End of Boston. Collections are primarily made up of archival material relating to mid- to late-20th century Urban Renewal and architectural preservation. Collections also contain numerous images, maps, books, pamphlets, files, and other assorted items from all periods of the South End s history. Separated Materials Books and pamphlets have been cataloged into our library. Related Materials The Everett Family Letters, 1851-1859 Sources of Information http://southendhistoricalsociety.org South End Historical Society: The Richard O.
