September 19, 2017 President's Medal for Former DIG D Roopa The former DIG of Prisons in Karnataka D.Roopa has been awarded the President s Medal for Meritorious Service. Ms Roopa shot into prominence when she alleged that preferential treatment was being given to the jailed AIADMK leader Sashikala, in the Bangalore Central Jail. She was later transferred to another position. New Appointments Made Senior IPS officer Y.C Modi has been named the chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved Mr. Modi s appointment as Director General of the NIA. He will take over from Sharad Kumar after he completes his tenure on October 30. Another senior IPS officer, Rajni Kant Misra, has been appointed Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Odisha sets up first Odiya language University The Odisha Govt has passed a bill which enables it to set up the first Odiya Language University in the state. The University will award degrees in literature, epigraphy and linguistics. Odisha becomes the fourth state in the country to set up an University for its language. The first three are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The University will be based in Bhubaneshwar. 69th Annual Emmy Awards Presented The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced at the Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles, California, U.S. The Handmaid's Tale became the first web television series to win the award for Outstanding Drama Series. INS Garihal carries relief material for Rohingya refugees under Insaniyat programme A ship of the Indian Navy INS Garihal has carried relief materials for the Rohinya refugees under the Insaniyat programme. This will help Bangladesh in relief operations. The ship will carry around 86 thousand family packs as part of relief work, to be distributed amongst the refugees. Russia, Iraq resume air travel after 13 years After a long hiatus of 13 years, air traffic has resumed between Russia and Iraq. The first scheduled commercial aircraft took off on the 17th Sept 2017. While the initial traffic is between Baghdad and Moscow, very soon it will be extended to the Iraqi city of Basra as well. Russia had suspended flights to Iraq in 2004. Japan releases postage stamps in honour of Indian Yoga experts In a rare gesture, the Japanese postal department has released postage stamps on Indian Yoga experts. Airtel Payments Bank becomes first Payment Bank in the country to integrate UPI on its digital platform Airtel Payments Bank integrated the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on its digital platform, allowing customer choice and convenience to facilitate secure digital payments. Airtel Payments Bank has become the first payments bank in India to integrate the UPI on its digital platform. In January 2017, Bharti Airtel launched Payments Bank in India to enable transactions on digital platforms. The initiative will allow bank customers to link their bank accounts to Bhim app and make UPI payments. Google Tez Payment App launched in India Google Tez has become the latest UPI-based payments app in the country. Sanjay Rajagopalan quits Infosys Infosys Senior Vice President Sanjay Rajagopalan has resigned from his post. The decision has come a month after Vishal Sikka stepped down as the company's MD and CEO. He was employed with Infosys from August 2014 to September 2017. Father of Indian nephrology Dr.K.S.Chugh dies of cancer The well-known nephrologist widely considered as the Father of Indian nephrology, Dr.K.S. Chugh died of cancer on the 17th Sept 2017. He was 85. Dr Chugh had published 413 papers including 38 chapters in national and international magazines and research publications. He was honoured with the Padma Sri. Louis Hamilton wins Singapore Open Grand Prix British racing great Louis Hamilton won the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix car racing tournament on the 17th Sept 2017.
