CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION The Renishaw Tool Touch Probe used on the Hardinge CONQUEST T42 Chucker and Bar Machine allows the operator to set tool geometry offsets quickly and accurately. Once the probe has been installed on the machine and properly calibrated, tool set-ups and changes can be done in seconds. - NOTE - Normally, it is not necessary to redatum the probe unless one of the following occurs: The probe arm has been dropped. The probe tip has been replaced. The machine is operating at a temperature that is significantly different than that which it was datumed at. - PRECAUTIONS - To insure optimum accuracy, the following precautions should be observed: 1. The arm must be kept for a period of time at the same temperature as the machine to be sure the arm is at the same temperature as the machine. 2. The machine should be at its normal operating temperature. 3. When datuming or tool setting is being performed, the arm should be stored inside the machine enclosure, in a safe location. 4. After tool setting or datuming has been completed, the arm must be removed from the machine and stored in a clean safe environment. 5. Do not lift the arm except at its base or otherwise mishandle the arm. Although the arm is ruggedly constructed, any stress applied to it may affect its calibration. 6. All procedures outlined in the Hardinge Datuming and Tool Setting Instructions must be strictly adhered to since many of the sequences can affect the safe and accurate operation of the machine if not followed. 7. If there is a conflict between the Renishaw documentation supplied with the probe system and the Hardinge documentation, the Hardinge documentation will apply. M-277 1-1

Using the values stored in offsets 28Z and 32Z calculate the value for parameter 5017 as follows: Add the Z tool length to the Z tool datum position to obtain the value for parameter 5017. Enter Z tool datum position from 32Z as a plus value. Enter Z tool length from 28Z as a positive value. Distance from Home to ZP datum point. Multiply by 25.4. Adjust to parameter value by moving decimal point 4 places to the right. In MDI mode, enter as a negative value in parameter 5017. 50. Press the JOG push button. Remove the cover and install the probe arm. 51. Verify the datum value for tip D using the following procedure: A. Use the axis jog push buttons and MPG handwheel to move tool tip D close to probe face D (ZP Face). Refer to Figure 2.1. B. Press the.0001 and Z push buttons under HANDLE. Then, press +Z push button under AXIS. Note that the push button indicator light will blink slowly. C. Position the cursor at geometry offset 29. D. Turn the handwheel in plus direction, one graduation at a time, until the value in offset 29Z changes. The new value should be within a few tenths of the value in 28Z. 2-10 M-277

- NOTE - If there is a large error, the probe will have to be re-datumed for all three points. E. Turn the handwheel in the minus direction and move the tool tip away from the probe. F. Jog the tool tip to a position where the axes can be homed safely. 52. Home the axes. 53. Remove the probe arm and install the cover. 54. Turn the probe option OFF as outlined on page 2-2. 55. Disable parameter editing. Refer to page 1-2. 56. Restore the values in offsets 25 through 32 to their original values. Refer to step 6 under TO QUALIFY THE TOOLS, page 2-3. This completes the probe datuming procedure. M-277 2-11
