Remember to sign up for the UFO Challenge. It is only $10 to sign up and think of all the unfinished projects you can get done to make room for more. I will be helping Marilyn this year so we will be busy buying prizes and making sure we have enough buttons for your UFO badges. QUILT RETREAT We have three openings for our October Quilt Retreat. Our Retreat is scheduled for Friday October 19 through Sunday October 21. A single room is $402, Double is $302 and a Triple is $272. The cost includes your meals. Payment will need to be paid in full at the October Quilt Guild Meeting. Dianne and I are very excited about starting a Guild beginner, small art quilt group. Look for our intro article inside this newsletter. Candy should be back from her vacation for October s meeting. She should be all fresh and full of new ideas. Keep on quilting, Charleen If you have never joined us for a retreat, please think about joining us in October. It is not very often that we have openings so close to retreat time, so we would love to have you join us. If interested, please e-mail me at colleen.sandiego@gmail.com. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Colleen McCune Quilt Retreat Chair 2

Friendship Quilter s of San Diego October 2018 PROGRAMS WORKSHOP Our workshop this month is called Paper Dolls for Grown Ups. It is about creativity, rethinking how you look at fabric, exploring decorative stitches and most importantly having FUN! Each fashionista that you create will be unique and is usually an expression of your personality. Finished pieces are small, so you will not be left with the dreaded UFO. I already checked out the fabric at Paradise and found some super fun prints with donuts, dogs, cats, popsicles and hedgehogs! What will you find in your stash to tell your story? All levels of experience are welcome. All that you need to be able to do is turn on your sewing machine and thread the needle. Kathryn will be teaching this class at Quilt Festival in Houston in November. So, if you cant make it for her class, then here is your chance to be the early bird! Workshop will be held at Paradise Sewing on Tuesday, October 9th from 10-4pm. There will be an $8 handout fee payable in class. Programs will be providing some salad bar starters and you are invited to bring a topping and??? for a shared lunch. LECTURE Meet our October guest lecturer, Kathryn Pellman. She is an artist, fashionista, cook, baker, gardener and storyteller. Her whimsical quilts combine fashion and quilting along with her passions to create single frame cartoon stories that invoke fashion illustration and feature mostly long limbed and knobby kneed female figures she call fashionistas. She describes her quilts as a celebration of women and femininity. 4

Friendship Quilter s of San Diego October 2018 PHILANTHROPHY Philanthropy would like to thank very sincerely an anonymous angel who donated a generous check in order for us to purchase a new roll of batting. Please know, dear angel, that it will warm many tired, aching bodies! Thank you again. That's it! I quilt! Ruth O Neil In The News Are you intrigued but feel intimidated by the thought of making art quilts? If so, join Charleen and Dianne as we search for answers and ways to express ourselves. This is a group for new textile artists at the beginning stage so we can find our way together. No meeting times or dates have been set yet, but they will be during the day. We have some helpful books to use in learning techniques and getting ideas and you probably have ideas to share. We would like to start with collage and how to get started. If that sounds good to you, come on and join us. It will be fun! 5
