Measure up your benchtop 1. Measure the size of your benchtop area in sections. Be sure to mark measurements in metres, as shown in the example. (Note: 100cm = 1m) 2. To calculate the square metre area (m 2 ²) of your benchtop using the table below, multiply length and width of each section, then add the m² area of each section to give you the total m² area of your new benchtop. 2.2m W Benchtop A Benchtop B Benchtop C 0.6m W 1.8m 0.6m 0.9m Calculate square metre area (m 2 ) Benchtop Section A 2.2 x 0.6 = 1.32 Benchtop Section B 1.8 x 0.6 = 1.08 Benchtop Section C 1.8 x 0.9 = 1.62 TOTAL m 2 (A+B+C) = 4.02 Overhang 1.8m One Benchtop Transformations Kit covers 4.6 sq. m. PREPARE THE BENCHTOP: (Time needed: approximately 20-45 minutes) 20-45 MINUTES Tools needed: Diamond-Embedded Sanding Tool, 50mm Smooth Painter s Tape, Drop Cloths, Lint-Free Cloths/Rags, Vacuum or Hard Brush and Dust Pan, Dust Mask and Disposable Gloves 3

The following steps will allow the Base Coat to attain maximum adhesion. A. Make sure the benchtop area is in good condition and that all cracks, chips and dents have been repaired. (See Benchtop Preparation and Repair in the FAQ section.) Then, clean the benchtop thoroughly with soap and water to remove any contaminants. Allow to dry. B. Wearing a dust mask and gloves, thoroughly sand the entire benchtop surface using the Diamond-Embedded Sanding Tool. Place both hands firmly on the Diamond- Embedded Sanding Tool and sand in a circular motion. Pay special attention to the splashback and the front edge of the benchtop. Be careful when sanding around the sink and other areas since the Sanding Tool can easily scratch these surfaces. Remove dry caulk around the sink or splashback using a putty knife. C. Use a shop vacuum with hose attachment to remove sanding dust and wipe down the benchtop with a damp, lint-free cloth. If you don t have a shop vacuum, you can use a hand brush and dust pan. Once the surface is dry, rub your clean, bare hand on the benchtop to check for dust. If you see dust on your hand, wipe the benchtop down again and allow it to dry fully. Repeat as necessary until all sanding dust is removed. D. Carefully inspect the surface to ensure that the entire surface is de-glossed. IMPORTANT: Complete de-glossing is CRITICAL for proper coating system performance. For proper adhesion, prime bare timber with Rust-Oleum Zinsser BIN Primer. E. Next, mask off the sink, appliances and all adjacent areas with smooth Painter s Tape. Spread the drop cloth on the floor along all base cabinets. Apply smooth Painter s Tape on the wall behind the splashback. F. Review Application Recoat and Drying Times on page 9. 4

STEP #1 APPLY BASE COAT (Time needed: approximately 30-60 minutes) 30-60 MINUTES Once the benchtop has been prepared, you will apply two even coats of the Base Coat, 2 hours apart. Preferred application conditions are between 16-27 C and 30% - 70% humidity. Any conditions outside these parameters will effect dry time. Tools needed: Base Coat, Stir Stick, 150mm x 10mm Nap Roller, 150mm Roller Frame, Mini Roller Paint Tray, 50mm Synthetic Paint Brush and Disposable Gloves A. Thoroughly stir the Base Coat using a stir stick. Pour a portion of the Base Coat into a clean paint tray. B. Starting with the splashback, use a 50mm synthetic brush to apply an even coat of Base Coat. Brush C. Be sure that your coverage includes 2-5cm of the flat benchtop surface that connects to the splashback. This will prevent your roller from accidentally bumping into the splashback while rolling. D. Working from back-to-front, use the enclosed 150mm x 10mm nap roller to apply an even coat of Base Coat over the entire benchtop, slightly overlapping each stroke. Then use the brush again to coat any tight spaces (i.e. around the sink or in the corners). Roller 5

IMPORTANT: If applying black benchtop paint, the appearance of the wet paint will be a dark grey colour and the first coat will dry darker. After application of the second coat, once dry, you will achieve a jet black colour. IMPORTANT: If applying white benchtop paint to a dark surface you may still see the original surface after the first coat. This is to be expected and will hide after the second coat is applied. E. For each section, once the Base Coat has been applied to the entire surface, reroll in one, uniform direction towards your body. (Do not back track more than a 3-4 metres to areas that have already tacked up.) F. After the Base Coat has been applied, quickly inspect the entire benchtop for sags, mistakes, or areas of thin coverage. Apply more Base Coat where necessary. To repair accidental bumps, see Benchtop Preparation and Repair in the FAQ section. G. After the first coat has dried for at least 2 hours or until the inside edges are dry, repeat steps A-F and apply a second even coat of Base Coat. (Pay special attention to where the benchtop meets the splashback, this takes the longest to dry.) H. Once the second coat is dry to the touch (approximately 2 hours) and before it completely dries, be sure to remove the tape by first scoring it around the edges. IMPORTANT: Allow the coating to dry overnight. Be sure to, apply the Protective Topcoat within 24 hours of applying the Base Coat. STEP #2 APPLY PROTECTIVE TOP COAT (Time needed: approximately 45-60 minutes) In this final step, the Protective Top Coat will create a beautiful, lasting and protective finish for your new benchtop surfaces. When applying the Protective Top Coat, ensure proper ventilation. 45-60 MINUTES 6

IMPORTANT: Contents of Protective Top Coat are flammable until applied to the surface. Extinguish all flames and pilot lights, and turn off stoves, heaters, electric motors and other sources of ignition during use until project is complete. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Do not smoke. Tools needed: Protective Top Coat Part A and Part B, Stir Stick, 150mm x 6mm Velour Roller, 150mm Roller Frame, 50mm Synthetic Paint Brush, Mini Roller Paint Tray, Scrub Pad, Drop Cloth, Lint-Free Cloths/Rags, Safety Glasses, Disposable Gloves and 50mm Smooth Painter s Tape. A. Using the Scrub Pad, sand the entire benchtop. Use only enough pressure to create a smooth, lightly textured surface. Give the benchtop a wipe down with a damp lint-free cloth and allow to dry. Note: While sanding, the Base Coat will look lighter in colour, but will come back to its original colour when the Protective Top Coat is applied. B. Mask off the sink, appliances, and all adjacent areas with smooth painter s tape. Spread the drop cloth on the floor along all base cabinets. Apply smooth Painter s Tape on the wall behind the splashback. IMPORTANT: Once mixed and activated, you will have 90 minutes to apply the Protective Top Coat. Do not use leftover Protective Top Coat after 90 minutes, even if it s still liquid. C. Wearing gloves and safety glasses, mix contents of Part B Base for 2 minutes before combining. Then pour the entire contents of Part A Activator into the Part B Base and thoroughly mix with a stir stick for at least 3 minutes. It is important to stir thoroughly for proper activation. Then, pour a portion of the blended Protective Top Coat mixture into a clean mini roller paint tray, and cover the remaining paint in the can. 7

D. Use a 50mm synthetic paint brush to apply an even layer of Protective Top Coat to the splashback and along the edges. Be sure your coverage includes 2-5cm of the flat benchtop surface that connects to the splashback as you did in the application of the Base Coat in Step #1. This will prevent your roller from accidentally bumping into the backsplash when rolling. Use Masking or Painter s Tape to de-lint the velour roller by wrapping it around the roller and then removing it E. For even coverage and to avoid roller marks, you must use the 150mm x 6mm Velour Roller provided. Roll an even coat by starting the roller in the middle of your benchtop, working up and back down. This prevents pooling by the splashback and helps to evenly disperse the Top Coat. Slightly overlap the strokes over the entire surface of the benchtop and over the front edge as you did in the application of the Base Coat in Step #1. IMPORTANT: Remove any dust or debris that may settle in the Top Coat prior to drying. Touch up areas as needed with roller. F. For each section, once the Protective Top Coat has been applied to the entire surface, reroll in one uniform direction. G. Allow the Protective Top Coat to dry undisturbed, taking steps to make sure the benchtop is not touched or brushed up against. Keep windows closed, pets away, and ceiling fans off. 8

H. Allow coating to dry overnight. The benchtop will dry to the touch in approximately 7-8 hours. Score the smooth painter s tape along the edges of the benchtop. Then carefully remove the tape. I. Allow the Protective Top Coat to dry 48 hours for light use. Wait 7 days for full cure and maximum stain resistance. See Maintenance and Care in the FAQ section for definition of light use and full use. Note: Dispose of velour rollers and paint brush. Avoid leaning in to or touching the benchtop while wet or tacky. APPLICATION RECOAT AND DRYING TIMES: Apply when room temperature is between 16ºC and 27ºC Base coat: Recoat after 2 hours. Let dry overnight. Protective Top Coat: Apply within 24 hours of application of Base Coat. Benchtop Use After Painting: 48 hours for light use. 7 days for full use. 9

FAQ s AND TILE CARE TIPS For additional information go to: www.rustoleum.com.au or www.rustoleum.co.nz GENERAL TRANSFORMATIONS QUESTIONS Q. IS BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS SAFE TO USE? A. Benchtop Transformations is safe to use. Follow supplied instructions for wearing mask, gloves or safety glasses as indicated. Use care, just as you would use any other refinishing product. Q. CAN I USE BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS OVER AN EXISTING BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS COATING? A. Yes, you can apply a new Benchtop Transformations coating over an existing Benchtop Transformations surface. The existing coating will need to be sanded thoroughly with the Diamond-Embedded Sanding Tool. Follow normal application process. BENCHTOP PREPARATION AND REPAIR Q. PRIOR TO USING BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS, HOW DO I REPAIR CRACKS, CUTS, CHIPS, SCRATCHES OR BURNS IN MY ORIGINAL BENCHTOP? A. Benchtop Transformations will coat and cover any burns and small scratches in the existing benchtop. Cracks, chips, deeper cuts or dents can be repaired by filling them with a 2-part epoxy putty. When the putty dries, sand the area until it is even with the surrounding surface. Once repairs have been made, follow the normal application process. Q. WHAT IF MY ORIGINAL BENCHTOP LAMINATE IS DELAMINATING? A. The original benchtop needs to be in good structural condition before refinishing. If there is delamination, properly reattach the laminate. If existing laminate is blistering, bubbling or buckling, do NOT use the Benchtop Transformations. 10

Q. WHAT IF I MAKE A MISTAKE DURING THE BENCHTOP REFINISHING PROCESS? A. If you accidentally remove the Base Coat by leaning into or touching the surface before it is dry, reapply paint right away. APPLICATION TIPS Q. BESIDES LAMINATE, WHAT OTHER SURFACES CAN BE REFINISHED WITH BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS? A. With proper surface preparation, and priming with Zinsser BIN Primer, Benchtop Transformations coating system will adhere to hardwood as well as metal trim. All benchtop materials should be sanded thoroughly with the Diamond-Embedded Sanding Tool and tested for good adhesion before coating the entire surface area. Q. HOW DO I REFINISH AROUND SINKS, STOVES AND OTHER APPLIANCES? A. Mask the sink and adjacent areas using smooth Painter s Tape. Be thorough about pressing in the edge to ensure none of the coating will bleed through. If you are planning on replacing your sink in the near future, now is an ideal time. Q. HOW CAN I AVOID POTENTIAL APPEARANCE PROBLEMS? A. When applying the Base Coat, apply the coating in smooth even strokes and finish with a final reroll in the same direction. If you see roller lines while rolling, you will see them in the final finish. Make sure coating does not pool up in the splashback inside edge and blend in the brush marks with the roller. The Protective Top Coat should be rolled until the mica flakes appear evenly. Again finish with a reroll, a final pass in the same direction. Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE SCREEN OF MY DIAMOND EMBEDDED SANDING TOOL GETS CLOGGED WITH DUST? A. Simply clean out the dust using a shop vacuum with a hose attachment. 11

Q. HOW DOES HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE AFFECT THE COATING APPLICATION PROCESS? A. Higher humidity will cause the Base Coat to dry more slowly. Ideal conditions are 50% relative humidity and temperature at or around 21ºC. Do NOT apply the Base Coat at relative humidity levels below 30% or above 70% and when the dew point is under 16ºC (negative). If humidity is low, use a humidifier to increase moisture levels in the room. Q. HOW DO I DISPOSE OF UNUSED PRODUCT AND SOILED RAGS OR BRUSHES? A. Cover any unused, unmixed products tightly for storage. Any mixed Protective Top Coat material will harden and cannot be reused. Cover mixed Protective Top Coat securely, allow to harden in the container, and discard according to local regulations. Base Coat tools can be cleaned with water. MAINTENANCE AND CARE Q. PLEASE DEFINE LIGHT USE VERSUS FULL USE? A. Once the Protective Top Coat is dry it is okay to wipe down the surface with water; okay for contact with lightweight items under 2kg; and okay for light food preparation. The Protective Top Coat needs to dry for 48 hours before light use, such as: Lightweight items under 2kg Wiping down surface with sponge & water Water pooling Light food preparation Cleaners or chemicals Using a toaster or kettle The benchtops need to dry for 7 days before resuming normal use. Never use harsh chemicals or super-abrasives to clean your benchtops. Wait 48 hours before caulking around the sink with 100% silicone caulk. 12

Q. HOW DO I SAFELY MAINTAIN MY NEW BENCHTOP SURFACES? A. Caring for your resurfaced benchtops is easy. To clean the surface, use a damp cloth or sponge and a mild soap or detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners or tools. The easiest way to avoid stains is to not let spills sit on the surface. All benchtop surfaces should be wiped clean regularly. Use trivets and potholders to protect against heat damage. In addition, utilize cutting boards for food prep to eliminate any chance of scratching. Q. HOW LONG WILL BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS LAST? A. With normal use and proper care, your refinished surfaces will last for years. Q. IS BENCHTOP TRANSFORMATIONS HEAT RESISTANT? A. Benchtop Transformations can withstand heat up to 57 C for SHORT PERIODS OF TIME. Cookware still hot from the stove, oven, or microwave, as well as electric skillets, waffle irons, curling irons and hot rollers, should not be placed directly on the coated surface. Use a trivet, insulated hot pad or other protective device beneath all heated objects. 13
