Featuring Washington Depot by Denyse Schmidt In this planned scrappy quilt, the florals and geometrics from the Washington Depot collection collide in an array of Hashtag Blocks in different print combinations. A diagonal setting is easy enough for a confident beginner when the block rows are joined with sashing strips. And, when the sashing is the same color as the block background fabric, as in this delightful design, the blocks seem to float on the quilt top. Sew the pieces with right sides together. You will make a total of 18 blocks in 8 different print combinations, using Fabric W 2 1 2 (6.35cm) squares and 2 1 2 x 4 1 2 (6.35cm x 11.43cm) rectangles with 2 1 2 (6.35cm) print squares, 2 1 2 x 4 1 2 (6.35cm x 11.43cm) print rectangles, and 4 1 2 (11.43cm) print center squares. Block and Sashing Assembly Note: The assembly method is the same for Blocks A-H. All remaining blocks (B-H) are assembled in the same manner, substituting the appropriate print squares and rectangles for each one as shown in the block illustrations (Figs. 4-10). 1. For steps 1-4, refer to Fig. 3. Row 1, Block A: For each row, arrange 2 1 2 (6.35cm) squares of Fabrics W and P with a Fabric W 2 1 2 x 4 1 2 (6.35cm x 11.43cm) rectangle in the order shown. 2. Row 2, Block A: For each row, arrange 2 1 2 (6.35cm) squares of Fabrics A and P with a Fabric P 2 1 2 x 4 1 2 (6.35cm x 11.43cm) rectangle in the order shown. Sew together and press as directed by the arrows. Make 4 of Row 2. 3. Row 3, Block A: Arrange 2 1 2 x 4 1 2 (6.35cm x 11.43cm) rectangles of Fabrics W and P with a 4 1 2 (11.43cm) square of Fabric D. Sew together and press as directed by the arrows. Make 2 of Row 3. 4. Sew the rows together to complete each block and press the seam allowances as directed by the arrows. In the same manner, make the required number of each of Blocks B-H, substituting the designated prints in each one (Fig. 4-10). You should have a total of 18 blocks that each measure 12 1 2 (31.75cm) square. Fig. 4 W V Fig. 5 W V W V G V G V W V M V W V G V G V W V W V W Make 2 Block C. Quilt Top Assembly 6. Follow the Quilt Layout for block placement and orientation. Arrange the blocks in the diagonal rows shown, alternating with 2 1 2 x12 1 2 (6.35cm x 31.75cm) Fabric W sashing strips between them and at the outer edges of each row. Add the sashing strips with cornerstones between the block rows. Note that the short, straight ends of the long sashing strips will extend past the setting triangles at the edges of the quilt layout. You will trim these later. Add Fabric L setting triangles at each end of the diagonal rows as shown. 7. Sew the blocks, sashing strips, and setting triangles together in their rows and press the seam allowances toward the sashing strips. 8. Carefully matching the seamlines where sashing strips and cornerstones insect, sew the rows together with sashing strips between them. Press the seam allowances toward the sashing strips. Add the last 2 Fabric L corner setting triangles and press. 9. Square up the quilt by trimming away the sashing strips that extend past the left and upper edges of the quilt top. Finishing 10. Prepare a 69 x 89 (175.26cm x 226.06cm) backing panel. Trim away any stray threads on the back of the quilt top. Press the backing and the quilt top to remove all wrinkles. 11. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top and baste the layers together using your favorite method. Quilt as desired. Trim the backing and batting even with the quilt-top edges. 12. Sew the 2 1 2 (6.35cm) bias strips of Fabric K together with diagonal seams to make one long binding strip. Press the seams open. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing and press. 13. With raw edges even, sew the binding strip to the top of the quilt and miter the corners as you reach them. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand-stitch in place. 7 of 8
