Name VALUE Value is the relative lightness and darkness of a color or grey tone. Color as well as black and white, has value. When you turn a color photo into a black and white version you can see the relative values of the colors. You can't have any image without value, so it is very important for the artist to always be aware of the various values in his artwork and how they affect the composition. Drawings with low contrast in values, where most of the tones are washed out or grey, will look dull and subdued. The best artwork will have a full ranges of values, from the darkest darks to the lightest lights. Any artwork will "pop" and will be improved if the values cover the full range. The single most effective thing an artist can do to raise the quality of his art to a professional level is to develop a good eye for value. In value, it is the contrast of dark and light values that are important. If most of the painting is light, then the dark lines and shapes will catch the eye first. If the predominant value is dark, the light value will catch the eye first. As a general rule, light tones and white catch the eye first, but in the end, it's contrast that's most important. Use contrasting value as a way to bring the viewers eye to your focal point and as a means of managing your composition. Vocabulary (also on drawing vocab worksheet) Value The lightness or darkness of a color Cross hatching The use of line and overlapping line to create value. Stippling The use of dots spaces in indifferent ways to create value Chiaroscuro Method of arranging light and shadow in two dimensional art to create the illusion of three dimensional form. (from the Italian) Shade The darkness of a color; may be achieved by adding black. Value Scale The range of values from black to white and light to dark. Light Source Demonstrates the direction that light is coming from in a drawing, Gradation A gradual, subtle change in value using highlights and shadows to create the illusion of form. Transparent You can see directly through the object, such as clear glass. Translucent Some light can pass through object, such as stained (colored) glass. Opaque light does not pass through object, such as glass painted black.
Value Practice Tonal Value: Using Pencils and blending sticks to create a drawing that resembles a black and white photograph. Create a Value Scale: Usings your drawing pencils and blending sticks please create a 10 step value scale using the boxes provided below. Please make sure each box is filled in completely and that you can see the difference between each step of the scale Tonal Value Practice part 2 a. Choose any geometric shape b. contort that shape slightly to make it more interesting c. draw that shape 4 times and make sure that at one point all four shapes overlap d, lightly draw your overlapping shapes in the large portion of your square e, starting with light on the exterior parts of the shapes that are NOT overlapping, work your way in creting eaching overlapping spaces with a darker value until you get to the point where they all overlap (which should be your darkest spot.
Cross hatching The use of line and overlapping line to create value.
