Publishing your One-Name Study Seminar Creating a One-Name Website Introduction Evaluations: Tailor-made Website Evaluations: GEDCOM-based Publishing Evaluations: PHP-based Website Evaluations: Alternatives

PHP-based Website: Using PhpGedView Creating a One-Name Website, Teresa Pask / 47

PHP Websites: Technical View PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language. Much of its syntax is borrowed from C, Java and Perl with a couple of unique PHP-specific features thrown in. The goal of the language is to allow web developers to write dynamically generated pages quickly. It normally requires the following to be present on your web site: 1. PHP (a scripting language, 4.0 or higher preferred) 2. MySQL (a database, 4.0.1 or higher preferred, but will also work on earlier versions back to 3.23.0) 3. You may also need an FTP program Creating a One-Name Website, Teresa Pask / 48

PHP Websites: What Does That Mean to a Family Historian? It is a powerful way to manage and display your genealogy data on the internet, all without generating a single page of HTML. Instead, your information is stored in MySQL database tables and dynamically displayed in attractive fashion with PHP. It stores your data on your server instead of on your own hard drive. Alternatively, you can create a GEDCOM, and upload it from your website You can make it private so that only you can see the data. Or you can give access to a few other family members, or everyone. You can also allow other people to add information. It is installed on a web server (that has a MySQL database) Use a PHP Family History Program: PhpGedView The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding Does setting up a web server sound too complicated? Creating a One-Name Website, Teresa Pask / 49

PHP-based Family History Program A much simplier way is to use a web-hosting solution Provides web hosting services and products focused and specialised in collaborative genealogy Ourroots.info 5,000 individuals - $4.95 / per month + Optional adds on 5,000+ Advanced Package $9.95 / per month + Optional adds on PGVhosting 5,000 individuals - $5.95 / per month (includes options) 5,000+ Advanced Package $8.95 / per month Creating a One-Name Website, Teresa Pask / 50
