Here s a way to make cover desgns out of nothng except a pen and rectangle (or ellpse) tool and some type. The technque s called step and repeat; you create one object such as a crcle, repeat t across your page untl t becomes a pattern, then add your words. The varatons? Endless. You ll see. 2 of 11

Crcles make especally good patterns because of ther smooth curves and seamless nteracton. Fll a feld wth crcles that just touch. Group. Copy the left column, and move the copy a half-column to the rght. Recolor. Set the opacty to, say, 50%, then step and repeat across the feld. Group. Repeat from the top down, dfferent color, 50% opacty. Group. Remove the corner crcles. Draw a whte, translucent crcle for the ttle pane, and just lke that, you have a harmonous pattern made entrely of crcles. 3 of 11

Delete the color fll, add a whte stroke, then fll the background wth a muted hue. Start wth your crcle pattern, add a permeter of crcles that bleeds beyond the page edge, Select All, and delete the color flls. To the crcles apply a whte stroke, opacty 30%. Fnsh wth a muted background color. Whle a crcular ttle pane harmonzes wth the crcles, here, the rectangular pane harmonzes wth the page. Together, ther large, squarsh shapes domnate the small, busy crcles and push them nto the background where we want them. Set the rectangle at 70% opacty, whch allows a hnt of pattern to show through and glues the ttle pane to the page. 5 of 11
