FontWorks Quilted Wall Hanging In honor of National Quilting Month, use your embroidery skills on a quilt. Adding a special monogram or message with FontWorks will personalize your quilt even more. It s a nice touch for wedding quilts, baby quilts, or any other gifted quilt while using the Madeira Aeroquilt thread. Supplies: FontWorks from Designer s Gallery Baby Lock Ellisimo Gold sewing and embroidery machine 1 Yard of a beige tone-on-tone fabric for embroidered center and backing 3 Fat quarters Tear-Away Stabilizer from Baby Lock Madeira embroidery thread Madeira Aeroquilt 40wt quilting thread w/ thread adapter for larger spools Batting At the Computer: 1. Open the program by clicking on the FontWorks icon on the desktop. 2. On the top toolbar, click on the down arrow below the Hoop icon and select the 200mm x 200mm hoop. 3. To create the design with a single letter in the center follow the next set of steps: Click the Design icon (as shown below in the illustration). Starting on the left side of the hoop, left click and drag to size and place the design on the workspace. Make the design slightly smaller than the hoop that was placed on the workspace. To center the design select the design and click Tools on the toolbar. Click on the Center icon to center the design in the hoop. 4. To create the letter in the center of the design, click on the Text icon. Click anywhere on the workspace to open the Properties while following the next set of steps: Type a single letter in the Text field. The letter W was used in the sample. Place a checkmark in the TTF field. Select the font folder. In the sample, the Yummy Apolo TrueType font was used. If you do not have this font, you can use any other TrueType font or you can download it from a TrueType font website. Many TrueType font websites offer free downloads. Set the Height to 50mm. Under Style, select Column. Click Apply. Use the following illustration as a guide. 5. To change the color on the name, click on the color Palette tab in the Properties field and select a different color from the color choices. {Designer s Gallery}FontWorks Quilted Wall Hanging Page 3
6. Place the letter in the center of the design (as shown below in the illustration). 7. Click on File Save As and send to the media source in the format that your machine will read. Give this design a name. At the Cutting Table: 1. Cut one 12 square section from the tone-on-tone fabric. 2. Cut four 3½ wide strips across the width of one of the fat quarter fabrics for the inside sashing. 3. Cut four 2½ wide strips across the width of the next fat quarter sections for the outside sashing. 4. From the third fat quarter section, cut four 2 wide sections across the width of the fabric for the binding. Piece these sections together end to end. At the Machine: 1. Hoop the stabilizer along with the tone-on-tone 12 fabric square centered in the hoop. 2. Place the hoop on the embroidery unit. 3. Embroider the design using the Madeira thread colors of your choice. 4. Trim the section to 9 square with the design centered in the square. 5. Set the machine up for sewing. 6. Sew the sashing strip to the top and bottom of the center section. Trim the edges to square them up. Sew the remaining strips to the sides and square them up. 7. Sew the outer sashing to the top and bottom of the embroidered section. Square the ends. Sew the outer sashing sides to the sides and square up the corners. 8. Sandwich the backing, batting and top sections together on a flat surface. Lightly spray between the layers to hold in place. {Designer s Gallery}FontWorks Quilted Wall Hanging Page 4
9. Set the machine up for quilting. 10. Wind bobbins and thread the machine with the Madeira Aeroquilt 40wt quilting thread. 11. Using a stippling stitch, quilt the layers together. 12. Trim all the edges. 13.
