GENERAL INFORMATION, TIPS and TRICKS 1. Please read the Assembly Instructions prior to assembling the unit. 2. To avoid damage, assemble the unit on a sturdy, level and non-abrasive surface.. Keep all hardware part out of reach of children. 4. Please wait until all steps are completed before fully tightening bolts. 5. Make sure all bolts are tightly fastened before the unit is used. This product is sold with two Tipping Restraint Hardware Kits. You must install the Tipping Restraint Hardware between the wall and the bookcase to prevent any accidents or damages. When properly installed, this restraint can provide protection against the unexpected tipping of the unit due to small tremors, bumps or climbing. The restraint is only a deterrent and is not a substitute for proper adult supervision. Use of tip-over restraints may only reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of tip-over. Assembly Instructions D B E A G 1-1/8 BOLT (6 used in this step) 1 FLAT WASHER (6 used in this step) 2 1. Unpack the unit and confirm that you have all the hardware and parts required. 2. Using the end wood dowels as a guide, align and attach the FIXED SHELF (G) onto the RIGHT SIDE PANEL (B) with two 1-1/8 BOLTS (1) and two FLAT WASHERS (2) through the cleat holes into place.. Attach the TOP FRONT STRETCHER (D) and TOP BACK STRETCHER (E) to the RIGHT SIDE PANEL (B) with the end wood dowels fully inserted. Make sure the cleats on both STRETCHERS (D and E) are up and face inward. When attaching the TOP FRONT STRETCHER (D) you will need to screw one 1-1/8" BOLT (1) and FLAT WASHER (2) through the cleat hole into the threaded inserts. 4. Using the bottom wood dowels as a guide, attach the BASE (F) to the SIDE PANELS (A and B) using four 1-1/8 BOLTS (1) with the FLAT WASHERS (2) through the cleat holes on the SIDE PANELS. Make sure the back edges are flush with each other. 6. Align and attach the TOP PANEL (C) onto the last assembly by using eight 1-1/8 BOLTS (1) with the FLAT WASHERS (2) through the cleat holes into the threaded inserts included in the TOP PANEL. Assembly Instructions I I 6 7 B C 4 I F 5/8 PAN HEAD SCREW (28 used in this step) 4 /4 SMALL BOLT (2 used in this step) 6 SMALL FLAT WASHER (2 used in this step) 7 7. Flip the unit around so you can attach the BACK PANEL (I). Now, go back and tighten all bolts. Make sure all the parts are tight and there are no gaps between the parts. This will help keep the unit square. 8. Lay the BACK PANEL (I) in place and proceed to attach. Align the pre-drilled large holes at the upper corners of the BACK PANEL with the threaded inserts on the TOP PANEL (C) and attach using two /4 SMALL BOLTS (6) with the SMALL FLAT WASHERS (7) into the upper corner large holes. Using the pre-drill holes on the BACK PANEL as a guide when attaching with the 5/8 PAN HEAD SCREWS (4). NOTE: We recommend attaching back panel with screws only at the corners first. Insert SHELF SUPPORTS () into the desired holes on the SIDE PANELS (A and B). Make sure you place the four SHELF SUPPORTS in the same level so the shelf is not tilted. Tilt and install the ADJUSTABLE SHELVES (H) onto the SHELF SUPPORTS () with the shelf molding facing forward. Secure the SHELVES in place with the 1/2 WOOD SCREWS (5) for extra support of the unit. Now go back and attach all the SCREWS to the back. 11. If necessary, adjust the pre-attached FLOOR LEVELERS at the bottom of the Bookcase to level the unit. Whalen Furniture Mfg., Inc. Assembly Instructions Tools required: Phillips screwdriver, Mallet, Power Drill, and /8 Drill Bit. 12. With help from your assistant, position the assembled bookcase in the desired location against a wall. Now, follow the instructions printed on the plastic bag containing the Tipping Restraint Hardware to mount the tipping restraints to the unit and the wall. NOTE: Young children can be seriously injured by tipping furniture. You must install the Tipping Restraint Hardware with the unit to prevent any accidents or damage to the unit. The tipping restraints are intended only as a deterrent, they are not a substitute for proper adult supervision. The tipping restraint is not an earthquake restraint. Care and Maintenance Use a soft, clean cloth that will not scratch the surface when dusting. Use of furniture polish is not necessary. Should you choose to use polish, test first in an inconspicuous area. Using solvents of any kind on your furniture may damage your furniture s finish. Never use water to clean your furniture as it may cause damage to the finish. Always use coasters under beverage glasses and flowerpots. Liquid spills should be removed immediately. Using a soft clean cloth, blot the spill gently. Avoid rubbing. Always use protective pads under hot dishes and plates. Heat can cause chemical changes that may create spotting within the furniture finish. Stains or marks from crayons or ink markers will be difficult to remove. In the event that your furniture is stained or otherwise damaged during use, we recommend that you call a professional to repair your furniture. Check bolts/screws periodically and tighten them if necessary. Further advice about wood furniture care It is best to keep your furniture in a climate-controlled environment. Extreme temperature and humidity changes can cause fading, warping, shrinking and splitting of wood. It is advised to keep furniture away from direct sunlight as sun may damage the finish. Proper care and cleaning at home will extend the life of your purchase. Following these important and helpful tips will enhance your furniture as it ages.
