Installing Rail Bases Two Rail System (Top and Bottom Rail) NOTE: If you ordered the rail system with the optional MicroStar LED lighting, refer to page 13 before continuing. Option 1: If your rail design calls for surface mounted bases use the following instructions: Step 1: According to your assembly drawing snap chalk lines on the mounting surface (deck, interior floor, etc) to produce straight lines for installing your bases. Chalk lines should always be set according to the assembly drawing specifications, but at a minimum of 2 away from the edges of the deck boards where the deck boards overhang the joists to avoid splitting the board when drilling the holes for the surface mount base. This will ensure that the railing is straight. Important!! When mounting on a deck, for greater stability, surface mount bases must be installed on the boards directly over the
Page 5 of 18 joists. A minimum of 2 of the 4 supplied screws for the bases must be screwed through into the joists. Where screws are not inserted directly into the joists, the under part of the deck should be reinforced for greater stability. NOTE: It is very important to secure the surface mount bases into the joist supports below for overall strength and stability. Most decks have double joists at the perimeter, and for best strength, two base screws should be located in each of those. Carefully determine the position of the first base and last base according to your assembly drawing, very. Verify that the spacing of intermediate posts matches the assembly drawing layout for your deck railing. Mark the location of the screw holes and pre-drill holes through the deck boards and into the joists below; be careful not to drill oversize,. NOTE: Make sure that the base is aligned and perfectly level. Matching stainless steel shims are available if required. Fasten the base to the deck with the wood screws provided. If the lighting does not work, recheck the wire connections. For the last railing section, tape the each connector to insure they do not touch and then tape the end wire connectors together and store the excess in the top rail before finishing the installing. Option: If wiring isolated sections of rail, use one of the following two options: For Railing Installations over a Wood Deck Wire the section directly to the transformer. Run the wiring from another section under the deck and through the mounting base. For Railing Installations over Concrete or Masonry Wire the section directly to the transformer. Run the wiring from another section under the concrete or masonry and through the mounting base. Step 4: Once railing is completely installed and lighting is fully functional, set the timer on the transformer for the desired lighting period.
