Kingsley, a U.S. Air Force staff photographer, taken during World War II, the Korean War, the 1963 fire aboard the TSMS Lakonia, and at North and Shaw Air Force Bases in South Carolina. Kingsley joined the U.S. Army as a member of the 11th Armored Division during World War II. The division liberated Gusen and Mauthausen, two German concentration camps located in Austria. After the war, Kingsley reentered the military and joined the Air Force. He served as an information office photographer and was stationed in Korea and South Carolina before retiring from the military in 1968. Collection Overview The collection consists of approximately 90 photographs, 260 negatives, and three scrapbooks of Robert E. Kingsley, a U.S. Air Force staff photographer, taken during World War II, the Korean War, the 1963 fire aboard the TSMS Lakonia, a Greek-owned cruise ship that caught fire and sank, and at North and Shaw Air Force Bases in South Carolina. Inventory Photograph Album 1 Photographs and negatives, 1942-1964, undated Approximately 90 black-and-white photographs and 260 black-and-white negatives show Kingsley and other members of the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War, the 1964 rescue of people aboard the TSMS Lakonia, a Greek-owned cruise ship that caught fire and sank, and at North and Shaw Air Force Bases in South Carolina. Includes 16 Holocaust atrocity photographs taken at Dachau and Mauthausen concentration camps. Scrapbook 1 Scrapbook 1, 1953, undated Includes black-and-white photographs from the Korean War showing damage to U.S. planes; crashes, fires, injured airmen, and bomb damage to buildings; and portraits of American and South Korean servicemen. Scrapbook 2 Scrapbook 2, 1952-1967, undated Includes black-and-white photographs from the Korean War showing pilots, airmen, and South Korean civilians; U.S ships, planes, and airfields; landscapes, street scenes, and bomb damage to buildings; a 1952 group photograph of Kingsley and other lab personnel; and performers at a Christmas 1952 USO show.
