T H E I N D I A N I N S T I T U T E O F A R C H I T E C T S N A G P U R C E N T E R PROF. S.A. DESHPANDE STUDIO DESIGN COMPETITION - 2013 DESIGN ASSIGNMENT FOR EIGHTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ARCHITECTURE (INSTITUTIONS AFFILIATED TO R.T.M.N.U., NAGPUR) REG I O N A L M U S E U M & C E N T R E F O R C O N T E M P O R A R Y A R T Nagpur being part of the great Gondwana region has a rich geological history. Complimenting it, there is an anticipation of rich cultural history from traces of civilizations that existed in the past. Excavations that have been carried out in regions in and around Nagpur have more often than not, unearthed many hidden forms of human expressions. These range from the primitive megaliths and cave paintings to pottery and coins from the Bahamani period and remnants from the Gond, Bhosla and ultimately the British period. Nagpur, at this juncture is buoyant in the euphoria and momentum gained from unearthing of treasure it always possessed. History always strengthens self-pride. Sensing the charged mood and times we invite students to design a Centre for promoting and nurturing artistic expression. The aim is to design a precinct that shall serve as a melting pot for humanistic expressions. It shall comprise of a Regional Museum that will showcase the remnants from archaeological expeditions for the region of Central Provinces (as it was once known). Museums have a significant role in a city, as a civic space. The exhibits bear a testimony of time and layers of mystery. These unearthed pieces of artifacts can be a great source of inspiration and have a more lasting and lingering effect on a citizen. It can also generate a sense of pride and encourage citizens to explore and be inspired from the sites of excavation. Generating a general awareness towards the extensive archeological work being carried out is a key motive for proposing a Regional Museum. It also hopes to further extend the research work devoted to the study of this region. A better understanding of the history of region has always helped us grasp the unique attributes which a region possesses. This becomes further relevant in this period of homogenization.
Second part of the assignment is to design a Centre for Contemporary Art. It is anticipated to be an umbrella space for the budding artists of the region. It aims to generate a contingent environment where artists with different mediums of expression can come together, get mutually inspired and benefit from each other s presence. Artists would be able to rent and use the proposed workshop and studio spaces, to work on their projects or conduct public workshops. They could also showcase their work in the exhibition galleries and confront an audience in auditorium and Open Air Theatres through events. Centrifugal energy of spaces like these can have a self-assuring effect on artists, as over a period, they metamorphose into an experimental workshop like setup that could in effect generate a guild like fraternity. Throughout history, important cities have always served to be centers of cultural intensification. History has always inspired the contemporary and art has always played a pivotal role in defining a cultural identity. The assignment provides an opportunity to generate a precinct that combines history and the contemporary. Like a magnet it could attract and incubate the exploits of researchers, fine and performing artists, and mature their expression into vocabularies that could shape and influence generations. Nagpur as a city has a lot to offer and express and has a potential for being a gateway city and undergo cultural intensification; the project anticipates achieving the same.
