PTO Pge 1 ModWood New Zelnd Technicl nd Instlltion Guide These guidelines should be red in conjunction with the New Zelnd Building Code (NZBC). Cluses tht pply to open, sltted decking nd blcony construction re: B1 Structure B2 Durbility D1 Access routes E2 Externl moisture (wterproofing to the building envelope) F2 Hzrdous building mterils (glss brriers) F4 Sfety from flling When building deck plese refer to the following stndrds: AS/NZS 1170, NZS 3602, NZS 3603,NZS 3604, NZS 3605, NZS 3640 nd NZS 4203. Other recommended references include BRANZ Build 139 Supplement: Timber Decks. Any deck or blcony 1.5 metres or more bove clered ground level requires building consent. However, even if building consent is not required, construction must still comply with NZBC requirements. Fixings nd Fstenings Hot dip glvnised steel nils nd screws mybe used to fix decking (NZS 3604:2011 Tble 4.3), but note 4 sttes, tht where timber hs been treted with ACQ or CuAz preservtive, minimum type 304 stinless steel or silicon bronze fixings must be used nd tht stinless steel nils should be nnulr grooved to provide sufficient withdrwl resistnce. Instll ModWood decking with 12 mm minimum gp between the building cldding nd the decking for dringe nd mintennce. Corrosion zones In zone B use of hot dipped glvnised fixings when instlling ModWood is possible s long s the requirements of NZS 3604:2011 Tbles 4.1 nd 4.3 re met. In zone C use of stinless steel (minimum grde 304) is conservtive decision which we recommend, however should you decide to use hot dipped glvnised steel fsteners when instlling ModWood the requirements of NZS 3604:2011Tbles 4.1 nd 4.3 must still be met. In Zone D & E, tble 4.1 requires ll structurl fixings in sheltered nd exposed loctions to be stinless steel (minimum grde 304) Slip resistnce In public res, it is recommended tht ModWood decking be lid t right ngles to the min direction of pedestrin trffic. A wter bsorbing mt my be necessry round swimming pool surrounds, pool rmps nd stirs leding to wter. Stndrds Austrli HB 198:2014 Tble 3B provide guidnce for pedestrin surfces for prticulr pplictions ModWood 137mm hs slip resistnce clssifiction of R11 rting ModWood hs lso been tested to the Dry Floor Friction Slip Resistnce Test AS 4586:2013 nd chieved clssifiction of D1 with men coefficient of friction of 0.6 which meets the criteri of D1 Sfety from flling When instlling stirs, elevted decking tht my require hndrils nd/ or blustrding then you will need to consult with suitbly qulified engineer on the regultory sfety requirements in these circumstnces. EXTERNAL STAIRS on the ccess route into house my provide ccess to deck or cross sloping site. If they re prt of the min ccess route to the house, they must comply with NZBC cluse D1 Access routes. The Acceptble Solution D1/AS1 is quite prescriptive, including requirements for stir pitch, riser height, tred depth, projections or nosing s, where open risers my be used, stir width, hndrils nd slip resistnce. Deck Brriers Informtion tht needs to be considered, if you re building deck or rmp where someone could fll verticlly one metre or more then you must comply with NZBC Cluse F4. In 2012, the Deprtment of Building nd Housing (now Ministry of Business, Innovtion nd Employment Building nd Housing) published Guidnce on brrier design, which gives guidnce nd recommendtions on designing nd instlling Building Code-complint brriers. As of December 2012, timber brrier complying with prgrph 4.2.7 of the Guidnce on brrier design meets the Building Code cluse F4 nd B2 requirements. Other brriers will need specific engineering design. Brrier elements- Brriers for residentil decks must: be continuous where the fll height is over 1.0 m be t lest 1.0 m high hve openings tht prevent 100 mm dimeter sphere pssing through hve less thn 15 mm gps between horizontl rils hve the top of the brrier t lest 760 mm bove fixed set hve no shrp edges or projections. Nil gun not preferred method. ModWood Therml Expnsion Properties Fixing tip The temperture of ModWood bord sitting in full sun for length of time is pprox. 20-25 C wrmer thn the mbient ir temperture. As ModWood expnds in het nd sun, to void building stress into your screen nd hving possible lengthwys shrinkge, it is best to fix your screening bords when the mbient temperture is less thn 25 C nd when the bords re not sitting in full sun (see coefficient of therml liner expnsion on our website.) It is importnt not to leve bords lying in full sun for long periods of time prior to instlltion. Conversely fixing screening bords in mbient tempertures significntly colder thn the verge men temperture for your region my lend to incresed deflection during wrmer periods. ModWood Instlled with KlevKlip Conceled Fixing System ModWood must not be instlled over hed with KlevKlip i.e. ceiling or soffit pplictions. *If ModWood is instlled using the KlevKlip conceled fixing system this llows 4 mm side by side gp which is cceptble provided:- minimum clernce from wll must be t lest 150 mm nd the upright spn must be reduced to 800 mm centres for continuous or single spn instlltions. Mximum height of the screen from ground level if KlevKlip system used is 2400 mm. Where butt joints re required with KlevKlip system - doubling the posts nd clips re required t these points. Refer to KlevKlip website for fixing nd dhesive instructions: www.klevklip.com.u ^ Do not use nils for 137 mm bord Generl When fixing, ensure tht you strt from one end nd then fix progressively long the bord length. This will ensure tht you ren t building stress into the bord, which my occur if you fix off the bord ends first nd then fix off the intermediry posts. Pre-drilling nd countersinking is lwys essentil. Fixing too close to bord end will cuse splitting - no closer thn 15 mm nd no closer thn 20 mm from edge. Do not overdrive fsteners. The hole drilled must be slightly greter thn the outside dimeter of the screw thred. Screw down with low torque, tke prticulr cre t ends of the bords. Ensure the hed of the screw finishes flush with bord surfce. Fsteners in low corrosion res must hve glvnised coting or equivlent. In high corrosion res use stinless steel fsteners. Fsteners must be instlled perpendiculr to the bord fce i.e. do not skew fix. Use only fixings which comply with New Zelnd Stndrds ModWood must not be used s prt of the frme or used s structurl element. ModWood cn be instlled overhed so long s it is fce fstened with screws. Verticl Upright (post) Uprights must be rigid nd fixed t bse eg. min 65 x 65 mm steel or 90 x 90 mm timber. Do not use ModWood for the upright. Posts must be instlled perpendiculr, prllel nd squre to ech other - nd must hve sufficient rigidity to remin so during service. Note: Footings should be s per locl council regultions. Plese note: Due to the moisture normlistion of the wood fibres in the product, ModWood screens cn in some circumstnces show some deflection between the uprights.

PTO Pge 4 Fixing Instructions for ModWood Flme Shield Storge nd hndling Store ModWood in flt, dry re under roof nd off the ground. Alwys crry ModWood on edge. Ventiltizon Good ventiltion for your deck is essentil. Check our chrt for ground clernce informtion. Do not prevent irflow by seling off deck ends, for exmple with grden beds, trees or solid objects. Instlltion Fixings must not be closer thn 15 mm from the end of the bord nd do not skew fsten. Double fix on ech joist. Fsten 20mm from outside edge of the bord. When butt joining top fix bords it is recommended to hve 45 mm joists. Stgger joints do not crete sem of joins. Screw fixing Pre-drilling nd countersinking is essentil when fixing with screws. Drill-bits used must be t lest the outside dimeter of the screw thred (preferbly slightly oversize). As minimum, glvnised coted screws re recommended for low corrosion res. Use stinless steel screws for high corrosion res. Screw down with low to medium torque. Do not overdrive screws, prticulrly ner the ends of the bords. Screws should finish flush with top of bord. Nil fixing Pre-drill with drill-bit lrge enough to provide slight clernce on the shnk, then fix with dome-hed glvnised nil. Do not punch the nil heds under the surfce. In high corrosion res, we recommend stinless steel decking nils (pre-drilling hole with clernce is still required). Nil Guns As with ll decking, the preferred methods of fixing re drill nd screw, or drill nd nil. Should you decide to use nil gun, you need to stisfy yourself tht nil penetrtion nd retention is stisfctory. Such tests should be crried out prior to instlltion. The preferred nil gun is the Pslode Duo-Fst CNP 65 Coil Niler. Use dome hed stinless steel decking nils. Double fix on ech joist. We do not recommend nil guns for use on decking greter thn 23 mm thickness, or for use on steel joists. When fixing bords by nil gun, pre-drilling nd hnd niling is essentil for ech fstener within 50 mm of the end of bord. Conceled Fixing with ModWood KlevKlip is the preferred method of using conceled fixing with ModWood. For ll informtion on KlevKlip, plese contct: www.klevklip.com.u Plese note tht when using conceled fixing products, it is still importnt to ensure tht the ModWood stndrd gp spcings for side-by-side, butt-joins, nd end spcings re still strictly dhered to. Importnt plese check you use the correct model KlevKlip to fit the chosen ModWood bord. Refer overlef. Flme Shield, is certified to AS1530.8.1-2007 with BAL-40 rting.
