Back to Business It was Monday, September 10, 2012, my Medicare Birthday, and President Tom Jeffry made fellow birthday boy Bill Bloomfield (who had just announced his engagement to Susan Sweet) and I (without prior notice) sing to each other (Bill looked disapprovingly at me before I sang, asking, Are you really going to do this? ). All survived..nehal Patel told us her aunt told her to drink milk to promote fairer skin and described her serendipitous meeting with Lisa Hemmat that brought her to Rotary..Birthday Boy Bill Bloomfield hosted a Labor Day club gathering in the absence of our regular meeting.alex Yoffe and his fellow Bruins celebrated UCLA s upset of the Cornhuskers. And, oh yeah, yawn, the Trojans won too.. By the time you read this, Randy Meadors will have hosted his annual Star Party, weather permitting..russ Rothner is organizing another Heal the Bay beach cleanup. Details forthcoming...dennis Ridge is looking for at least 20 volunteers to deliver backpacks and school supplies to Moffat School, and to read to the kids, at 9 am on September 18..Ray Padilla kindly donated four primo Bruin tickets, picked up in auction by John Osten. And More Business Paul Allman is promoting attendance on October 27 at the annual District Paul Harris Celebration. This year it s a Masquerade Ball (several club members donned masks today to set a good example, and President Tom digitally donned both a mask and toupee). It s $125, all counting toward a Paul Harris Fellowship.Paul also passed out raffle tickets, one book of 12@ for whoever gave $100 to the RI Foundation this year (it s not too late to chip in).susan Adams needs signups (this is a whole-club commitment) for the Hometown Fair (October 5-7) Burger Booth and Wine Booth (Wine people who need t-shirts need to let Susan know).october 2 is the District Breakfast with a Tuskegee Airman; let Kathleen Terry know you re coming..robin Gary still needs Richstone volunteers. Teche, with kayaks, boardwalks, birds, wildlife, crawfish boils, dancing, Cajun music, Louisiana Rotarians, plantation visit, natural history, cultural history, alligators, a Tabasco plant tour and, believe it or not, much more. Not to be missed! Spouses, partners, fiancé(e) s, and significant others welcome. (Susan, you can come without Congressman Bloomfield.) Working Mom Lynn Range After just under a year s membership in the club, Lynn Range presented her craft talk. A product of Chicago, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Rockville, Maryland, she grew up doing serious ballet and musical theater. She did one year, her senior year, at Palos Verdes High, where she met Greg Range, a friendship she renewed many years later (he flew her to Paris to propose marriage in 1991.) They have two athletic sons, one still at home and the other playing water polo at Johns Hopkins (I just made the connection she said she thinks of Maryland as home). A UCLA Econ grad, she has done lots of things Bullocks manager, cosmetics distributor (to major stores), art consulting (to major corporations), Design Art Concepts, and now real estate. She s proudest of being a mom, active for years in PTA, kids sports, and parent activities. The family travels, and have studied together French (Laissez les bon temps roulez!), Spanish and Italian. She does Yoga and Taekwando. She met Jim Hunter as a Sandpiper with Jim s wife, Joanne, and thus became a Rotarian. Fire Chief Robert Espinoza Manhattan Beach Fire Chief Bob Espinosa gets his name from his Nicaraguan grandfather and is a second cousin of Richard Ackerman. Raised in Inglewood, he s a Leuzinger High alum who learned firefighting in the Army (Alaska and Arizona). He did a brief stint with El Segundo s Fire Department, which included seeing action during the Rodney King riots, and then spent 24 years with the Long Beach Fire Department (including fighting an 18th Story fire and doing rescue in a 200-vehicle pileup). He became Rialto s Fire Chief and came to Manhattan Beach in June 2011, where Les Silverman sponsored him into our club. Bob has a former wife and a current wife, both named Laurie Ann, resulting in three children, six
grandchildren and three stepchildren. Most of the Manhattan Beach Fire Department contacts are for paramedics and public service calls, with only 2-3 serious fires in an average year. Service For Self It felt like a back-to-work day. We ve had another great Manhattan Beach summer, but at this meeting we remembered our main reason for being things like Richstone, beach cleanup, Hometown Fair, RI Foundation, and support of schools. Come to think of it, none of these feels like work. Service and fellowship, service and fun. Service Above Self? Well, yes, but we get more out of this than anyone. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallet Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the quiet revolution of hope. Isn t it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place. How Well Do You Know Your Piers? The first Manhattan Beach Pier was all wood construction and built in 1902. It was destroyed in a storm in 1913. The second (and current) Manhattan Beach Pier was completed in 1920. The Roundhouse on the pier was finished in 1922 The Manhattan Beach Pier was declared a California Historical Landmark in 1995.
RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Get Involved Welcome to our New Members! Become more than a member of your Rotary club, become a Rotarian. Get involved in your club, your community and your world through the opportunities offered by our Rotary club and Rotary International. Long-time Rotarians agree that involvement is the key. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, help out with weekly meetings, or as part of a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and understand what Rotary does. District 5280 also offers opportunities for you to get involved. Attend your district s conference to learn more about Rotary and celebrate the good works of your district. Host the visiting Group Study Exchange team or help organize the district s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program to see what clubs working together can do. These activities will help you meet Rotarians outside of your club, widening your circle of friends and expanding your service potential.
Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Patti Panucci, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club s attendance record is reported district-wide. Let s help Patti keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you re not a Board member, and it s a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Patti s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you re not sure it s a make-up--hey, tell her anyway. Local Rotary Make-Up Clubs Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
