Tuskegee Airman Moret Becomes Honorary Member Calvin George Moret was voted an honorary member by New Orleans Golden Eagles Chapter; their first and submitted his name for Honorary Membership to Black Pilots of America, Inc. during the 2014 January Board of Directors Meeting. He was unanimously voted BPA s fifth Honorary Member since inception in 1997. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 15, 1925, he was the fourth of five sons of Adolph J. Moret, Sr. and Georgiana Perez Moret. He attended Corpus Christi Elementary Catholic School and graduated from Xavier Preparatory School in 1942. He entered the military in 1943 and trained in Tuskegee, AL and received his wings as a Flight Officer on November 20, 1944. His preparation for overseas combat duty continued with training as a bomber pilot. Upon completion, the war in Europe and the Pacific ended before he could be deployed. Prior to ending his military career on January 31, 1946, he acquired a commercial pilot's license. Following his discharge from military duty he returned to the family printing business started by his father in 1932. Calvin's flying experience continued at home in New Orleans. In the spring of 1949 Calvin and his brother Adolph, formed a flying club. Adolph Moret learned to fly before the war and was a civilian primary flight instructor for the Tuskegee Airmen from early 1942 until his acceptance of a commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1944. They grouped with about 20 other men, purchased a 3-place Piper Super Cruiser airplane and kept it in a hangar at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans until the summer of 1953. He and Adolph taught a number of the members to fly. One of their trainees acquired his Private Pilot license and went on to get his Commercial Pilot and Instructor license with instrument and twin engine ratings. In September, 1954 Calvin married Bernice Delery Rouege, a widow with a 5 year old son, William E. Rouege, Jr. In time they became the parents of Maria and Patrice Moret. The Moret Press, Inc., a printing company was started by his father and later operated by Calvin. All three children finished college and became an integral part of the family business. Calvin and Bernice celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary in March 2014. On March 28, 2007, The Tuskegee Airmen were presented the Congressional Gold Medal in the Rotunda of the nation s capital. Calvin and his wife were there to receive the medal along with many others which he had not seen in over 60 years. He was invited along with many other surviving Tuskegee Airmen to attend President Obama s inauguration. On June 29, 2013, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans presented Calvin Moret with the Whitney M. Young Legacy Award. Later, the members of New Orleans Golden Eagles Chapter voted unanimously to accept Calvin G. Moret as its first Honorary Member.
