St. Paul s Episcopal Church, Columbus, MS ALTAR GUILD Communion service ALTAR.. 6.8.13asl Linens are in top large drawer marked niches and second small drawer in Sacristy. 1. Remove LINEN ALTAR PROTECTOR from the Altar (return to Sacristy drawer on roll roll top side up). There should be a clean WHITE FAIR LINEN on the Altar under the Altar Protector. If it is dirty or wrinkled, put behind Sacristy sink and call Linen Chairman for that month to come launder it. Then replace with new Fair Linen from the Sacristy drawer. 2. Add CORPORAL (place at center front edge of Altar) and put on top of FAIR LINEN (Fair Linen already on Altar---Fair Linen should be centered and overhang over the left and right of the Altar equally). Make sure that Corporal and all linens have seams on the bottom as in this picture to the right. Wafers & Wine left on CORPORAL after service are CONSECRATED (Put extra in AUMBRY, consume, or pour directly on the ground outside. Anywhere else left on Altar or Credence Table is not consecrated. Never return used wine in Chalice to a cruet. See Between 8:00 & 10:30. 3. Check COLOR (Look at Church Calendar on Bulletin Board for the color of the date you are setting) of the PAIR of properly colored silk ANTEPENDIUMS.a heavy iron bar slips into slot of white fabric and place this bar at back of Altar which holds Antependium in place under the Fair Linen they should be centered in wooden panels on front of Altar...Just stand back and look from a distance be careful not to fall.

4. BOTH sets of CANDELABRA pair of Eucharistic (single candle) and pair of Threebranch/Office should be on Altar. Eucharistic always sits on Altar, on left and right edges, in front of the wooden Re-table candle stand, and as far back against the Re-table as possible to be out of Priest way. Three-branch can sit on top of wooden Re-table candle stands or on one of the Re-table shelves, if flowers sit on wooden candle stands. All BRASS candelabra are lacquered and do not need polishing. Remove candelabra to the Sacristy and place on half-round table under wooden table where money is counted Get Clear Plastic Liquid Wax Bottle which is under Sacristy sink, far right door, in front of large pump bottle refill from large bottle if low of liquid wax..then. Altar Guild members must check and REFILL EACH candle in all Candelabra.by gently UNSCREWING Brass TOP/follower to see if Liquid Wax is inside at the Top.HOLD BRASS TOP/follower THERE and DO NOT PULL WICK COMPLETELY OUT OF CANDLE (leave most of wick dangling inside candle), DO NOT TWIST WICK/brass screw piece OUTSIDE TOP OF BRASS TOP/follower Carefully open bottle, pour liquid wax almost to inside top Then put bottle down and turn TOP/follower about four (4) turns...do not tighten as hard as you can someone will have to open them after you. DO NOT play with wick on the top outside. When finished with all candles, return to Altar, CAREFULLY---do not trip. 5. TORCHES (on either side of Altar) need checked next for liquid wax. You can use top stair in front of Altar and place Torch down on bottom floor level or stand on our Altar Guild ladder from the closet. To open, twist the Brass Top/follower and check.if it needs liquid wax.carefully get bottle and fill holding Brass Top/follower with wick staying inside candle and FILL carefully. Twist Top several times to close and return Torch to Base. DO NOT play with the wick on the top outside.

Silver is in Sacristy locked cabinets at and above eye level to left of sink. 6. Place VESTED CHALICE (includes all items mentioned below) centered on top of and at the front of the Corporal WHEN it is covered with PROPER COLORED SILK VEIL and BURSE. JEWELED SILVER CHALICE and Silver Paten are in lower locked cabinet at eye level to far right and inside wooden box Lay PURIFICATOR, folded, (in top large drawer to far right front inside plastic box) across the top of Chalice Place SILVER PATEN (also in wooden box) across top of Purificator Place PRIEST WAFER on top of silver paten (Large wafers in their own plastic box in lower cabinet). Handle GLUTEN-FREE WAFERS first! Place LINEN PALL (Hard white square linen with cross in center; in plastic bag inside Purificator box) on top of priest wafer/silver paten Place appropriate COLORED SILK VEIL on top Place appropriate COLORED SILK BURSE on top of veil with fold edge toward the congregation. Make sure there are two (2) Purificators and one Veil, folded inside the Burse.. Use SILVER POLISHING CLOTH weekly to keep finger prints off silver 7. GLUTEN-FREE WAFERS* * * * * Make sure your hands are clean and washed. THESE WAFERS AT NO TIME CAN TOUCH THE REGULAR WAFERS Handle these Gluten Wafers always FIRST! * * * * * * * NON-CONSECRATED Gluten-Free Wafers are found in Specially Labeled box in lower locked cabinet at eyelevel to left of sink in Sacristy

There should always be a TOTAL of THREE GLUTEN-FREE WAFERS for EVERY SERVICE. These wafers are placed in a PYX (tiny round box), labeled either Not Consecrated or Consecrated Consecrated Gluten-free wafers are kept in a PYX in the AUMBRY. Not Consecrated (It actually says Not Consecrated on top) Gluten-free wafers have another PYX, in the Cabinet, which is placed at the back left corner ON THE CORPORAL (picture to the right)before the service. Two PYX would be needed if there are not three (3) Gluten-free wafers blessed and in the Pyx in the Aumbry. If the Consecrated Gluten-free Wafer Pyx is on the Altar before the service, it is placed OFF the Corporal and at the same back left corner OFF the Corporal.one on and one off! Just check with Priest or Deacon if you ever have any questions. Have total of EIGHT gluten-free wafers in PYX for FESTIVAL services. 8. Place BRASS MISSAL STAND with large RED PRAYER BOOK to the RIGHT of the vested chalice at a slant so Priest can read from it. (These are both on the Credence Table when there is NO Communion service or during Morning Prayer or after Sunday Communion services.) 9. The BRASS GOSPEL BOOK is kept in a red cloth cover inside the higher cabinet to the left of the sink in Sacristy. It is placed on the Altar BETWEEN the vested chalice and the Left Eucharistic Candelabra. Place it toward the Front of Altar Table, stand up the book and open some so it does not fall over (not too close to front edge of Altar). If you ever have trouble, just lay it down right there to the left of Vested Chalice. 10. Two (2) live FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS Must be on altar by 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (Tell Florist this!) or day before You must be sure that they are there before the Sunday 8:00 a.m. service. Call St. Paul s Flower Donor for your Sunday at beginning of the month and ask which FLORIST (have their phone number) they will be using but first check with Monthly Chairman or Church Secretary. Write name of florist on Sacristy Calendar.

If flowers or greenery is draping over onto the Altar in the way of the Priest, it is your duty to get the scissors and a ladder out and trim the arrangements back. Stallworth brass vases are not lacquered and need Brass polishing. Please keep Stallworth vases polished with brass cleaner. Brass cleaner is under the sink. All other vases are lacquered. The Fran Hazard ceramic vases do have bases. You may use the bases or not use the bases. If you use the bases, you must put Hazard vases with base on the Altar ends on the Wooden Candle Stands of the Re-Table. Then you have to move the Threebranch candelabra to the top inside shelf of the Re-table next to the Large Brass Cross. Plastic Liners for Brass vases are never to be taken from the church. There are glass vases and green plastic containers in lower cabinets under Funeral Palls to put flowers in after service to take to the sick. There are also plastic sticks and St. Paul s Altar Guild cards to put inside vases; they are found in plastic shoe bag slots on inside of right closet door. There is green floral tape and oasis on a sliding shelf in the left closet. Rev. Anne Harris will be leaving her Sunday sermon in the Sacristy to take with flowers to the sick and shut-in, and you could also include a Sunday program. CREDENCE TABLE.. Place LINEN CREDENCE TABLE COVER centered on top of Credence Table and place another Cover on the small table under Credence Table. Check hem side of Linens. Place SILVER LAVABO BOWL and LAVABO BOWL TOWEL (towel found in 2nd small drawer in Lavabo plastic box) to the LEFT FRONT of Table. Towel is placed under bowl with half sticking out and falling over front edge. Place SILVER WATER CRUET with 2/3rds full of water on FAR LEFT BACK of Table with handle to the

back and point to the front. Place SILVER OVAL TRAY CENTER FRONT of Table with small bag of 50 wafers. Cruets, Chalices, Ciborium, Lavabo bowls, wafers, trays, etc. are found in niches of lower locked cabinet. The 2nd SILVER CHALICE is placed in the CENTER BACK of Table (behind tray). The Chalice should have a folded PURIFICATOR lying over the top of it with a LINEN PALL on top of both. This Chalice and Purificator must be checked after 8:00 service to make sure that it was not used. Place 2 nd SILVER WINE CRUET with 1 1/2cups wine to the RIGHT BACK of Table with handle to the back and point spout to the front. (Wine is in locked top cabinet in Sacristy as well as measuring cup.) This Cruet must be checked after 8:00 service to make sure it still has 1/1/2 cups wine for 10:30 service. Place SILVER JULEP CUP ¾ filled with water on the LOWER SMALL TABLE under Credence Table. Place linen pall on top or small plastic bag. Place one large and four smaller SILVER ALMS BASINS on 2 nd SHELF. Each should have a red velvet circular piece in center. Make sure they are stagger stacked to get out easier. They could use some touch up with the Silver Polish Cloth each Sunday. Wine and communion wafers on credence table are NEVER consecrated. SMALL SQUARE TABLE BY BAPTISMAL FONT.. Put Table on Baptismal Platform in front of North stained glass window. Place CREDENCE TABLE COVER centered on top of Table Place CIBORIUM with 100 wafers to the LEFT side of the Table (on a small piece of paper write number of wafers and place inside ciborium when needed) Place 1 st SILVER WINE CRUET with 1 cup of wine to RIGHT side of the Table with point spout to the front and handle to the back (measuring cup in top left sacristy cabinet)

LECTERN.. Place Pair of Proper Colored SILK LECTERN HANGINGS Find these hanging backward in Sacristy cabinets Check seasonal colors on church calendar on bulletin board PULPIT.. Place Proper Colored SILK PULPIT HANGINGS on the hooks on top Find these hanging backward in Sacristy cabinets Check seasonal colors on church calendar on bulletin board Place SILVER JULEP CUP ¾ filled with water and covered with LINEN PALL or PLASTIC on right ledge under pulpit podium HYMN BOARDS.. Place appropriate Title for Sunday at top of Hymn Board and Hymn Numbers below (this can be found on program). If title cannot be found in cards, use COMMUNION or No Title at all just hymn numbers. Check for variation from 8:00. Slide in cards from the side of Hymn Board through slots Hymn Numbers o 1- Processional o 2- Sequence o 3- Presentation o 4- Recessional o Omit Communion Hymns

AUMBRY and SANCTUARY LAMP.. The Aumbry (Box on the wall) is the only place where we leave consecrated elements of bread (regular wafers and Gluten-free wafers) and wine. Please keep door closed. Consecrated wafers are placed in SILVER CIBORIUM. If there is extra consecrated wine on the Corporal and in the SILVER WINE CRUET after 8:00 service, pour it in the GLASS WINE CRUET already in Aumbry. If consecrated wine remains in CHALICE, you must consume wine or pour wine directly onto the ground. DO NOT POUR DOWN SINK. Our sink drain does NOT go directly to the ground. Never return used wine to a Cruet. Consecrated Gluten-fee wafers are kept in PYX inside the Aumbry. Sanctuary Lamp Candles can be founf in Sacristy in lower right cabinet on the East wall. Candle should be burning when we have consecrat elements in the Aumbry. You have to stand in the Bishop s chair, remove cushion or use ladder to take the plastic candle holder out of the red glass and replace with new Sanctuary candle. Be careful! If at all possible, ask Sexton to replace Candle.

CANDLE LIGHTERS.. Can be found in Main Church on Wooden Stand by Church Flag Check to see if WICKS need to be replaced o Wicks can be found in white box in lower Cabinet on North wall of Sacristy under Silk Hangings o Slide the lever on the side of Candle lighter all the way up toward the lighter end to see how long the wick is o If the wick is short, pull it out o Take new longer wick, push end through the open hole at end, and PULL through about an inch and FOLD back o Then pull lever back down the side of the lighter, wick will disappear inside tube, until a half inch sticks out, CUT off where needed. The CUP that extinguishes candle should be cleaned under the hot water and washed out with a paper towel to remove soot and wax. This dirty wax when hot can drip and ruin our linens. Then wipe inside of Lighter with Olive Oil on paper towel. Make sure that no matches are left on any wood. Burnt matches should be put under water faucet in sink or water bowl in sacristy and placed in secure place so that they can be disposed of properly. TORCHES.. Make sure filled with Liquid Wax. Make sure that Torches are not too close to the wood wall before service. They should match. You can move brass base stand away from the wall with your foot to prevent fire. Acolytes process and recess with Torches. During the service Torches stay lit and in place on the floor on either side of the Altar. TO CLEAN You will need to put Torch brass cup under Hot Water to remove debris from brass.then add olive oil to inside of cup after cleaning (find olive oil in small jar under the sink). LOCK all Cabinets after you set up for service. Sacristy cabinet doors can be left open during 10:30 service on Sunday morning. *Any Wine, Water or Wafers left on Credence Table after any service are not consecrated. Just return them to proper containers in Sacristy. Look at AFTER 10:30 service. 6.11.13 Thank you Altar Guild+
