GOOD TO KNOW Our fabrics have been tested At IKEA we test the fabric covers on our sofas and armchairs so you can be sure they re durable. The fabric s ability to resist abrasion is tested by using a machine to rub it against another fabric while applying firm pressure. A fabric that can take 15,000 cycles is suitable for furniture that must withstand everyday life at home and if it can take more than 30,000 cycles, it is very resistant to abrasion. All fabrics are sensitive to sunlight, which is why we also check that our fabrics resist fading effectively. Durable in different ways Tough tests are an important way to check the durability of our fabric covers, but they don t tell the whole story. Durability also depends on materials, construction and manner of use. Heavy, tightly woven fabrics with a flat surface are most resistant to abrasion. Fabrics with a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres can withstand abrasion better than fabrics with only natural fibers. Yarndyed fabrics are more durable than fabrics with printed patterns. And a dirty cover wears out faster than a clean one. The fabric is also affected by how you use your sofa of course. EDUM: fabric made of a polyester- and cotton mix. The woven textile creates a finely striped effect. FINNSTA: hard-wearing fabric with structure, yarn dyed in different shades. Cotton polyester blend. Washing instructions Resistance to abrasion (cycles) Light fastness (0-6) Machine washable at 40 C. 25.000 5 Machine washable at 40 C. 25.000 5 HILLARED : 55% cotton, 25% polyester, 12% viscose/rayon, 8% linen. Machine washable at 40 C. 30.000 5 RANSTA: strong, hard-wearing cotton fabric in solid plain weave. Machine washable at 60 C. 30.000 5 SANDBACKA: 77% cotton, 23% polyester. Dry-clean. 35.000 5 STENLI : 100% cotton. Machine washable at 40 C. 25.000 5 VISLANDA : 100% cotton. Machine washable at 40 C. 25.000 5 GLOSE: Soft, dyed-through 1.1 mm thick grain leather that can withstand both wear and tear and strong sunlight as it s treated with a protective fade-resistant coating. Easy to care for by vacuuming regularly and treating with ABSORB leather care set to keep the leather soft, supple and beautiful. SEGLORA: A full-grain, 1.2 mm thick leather of the highest quality. It is highly durable and becomes more beautiful with age, as it develops a darker tone. It has been treated with only a light coating which allows the leather to breathe and preserves the natural feel of the leather. Use a soft brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner to keep clean, and a damp cloth. Do not use any leather care products on this leather, including ABSORB. SMIDIG: Soft, hardwearing 1 mm thick leather that is treated with a thin coating to protect from dirt. Easy to care for by vacuuming regularly and treating with ABSORB leather care set to keep the leather soft, supple and beautiful. CARING FOR YOUR FABRIC ARMCHAIR At IKEA we have many different cushions, so chances are good you ll find one that s just right for you. The majority of our fabric cushions are removable and washable, which makes them very practical. If you should happen to spill something on them, it s not a catastrophe all you have to do is remove the cushion and wash it. You can even buy a new cushion to revamp your armchair or match a newly renovated room. One idea is to have several cushions that you can switch between one for every season! Take care of your armchair With a little care you can keep your fabric armchair looking good for longer. Vacuum it regularly, since dust and dirt break down the fibres and impair the quality of the fabric. Try to protect your armchair from exposure to direct sunlight. It s a good idea to close curtains or blinds during the hours when the sunlight is strongest. Easy to wash Our removable cushions can either be machine-washed or dry-cleaned. You should always wash the entire cushion, so there is no risk of colour shifts between different areas. How the fabric should be washed depends on the material, how it is woven, the texture and the shape of the cushion. For this reason, it is essential to follow the washing instructions on the label. Close the zipper on the cushion when you wash it it reduces stress to the inner seams and zipper. Don t put the cushion in the dryer it may shrink. Hang it up to dry instead. It s better to iron the reverse side of the fabric and to do it while the fabric is still a bit damp. That makes it easier to get creases out and easier to put the cushion back on the armchair. Removing stains If you should get a stain on your cushion, it s important to remove it immediately. Sometimes ordinary water will be all you need. If you re not sure what caused the stain, it s best to take the cushion to be professionally dry-cleaned. Otherwise, you risk washing in the stain rather than washing it out. If you use a stain remover, it is advisable to first test it on an area of fabric that is not usually visible. The stain should be lifted and not rubbed away. The majority of our fabric covers are removable and washable. Protect your armchair from direct sunlight with blinds or curtains when the sun is strongest. If you should get a stain on your cover, remove it immediately.
GOOD TO KNOW DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEATHER AND MATERIALS When it comes to leather, most animal hides are too thick to be used for furniture. The hide must first be divided into two layers. The top layer is called grain leather and the under layer is called split leather. Grain leather is softer and stronger and split leather is less expensive. This is why IKEA often uses a combination of both, using grain leather on surfaces that are more exposed to wear, such as seating surfaces or backs and armrests, and split leather on other surfaces. Aniline leather and semi-aniline leather are types of full-grain leather. Pigmented leather can be either grain or split leather. How do the materials differ? There are many characteristics that distinguish the different materials, for example, suppleness, durability and texture. Therefore, certain types of materials are more suitable for certain furniture pieces and lifestyles than others. Bonded leather is highly durable and thick, which makes it a practical choice for families with children. Coated fabrics are also hardwearing and less expensive. The thickness of the leather can vary. The leather used in IKEA sofas is between 1.0 and 1.7 mm thick. All leather is tanned first, which means it is preserved. Then it is through-dyed and oiled. After tanning and dyeing there are different methods for finishing the surface of the leather. There are three main types of leather: pigmented leather, which has a protective surface of pigment semi-aniline, which has a slightly pigmented surface aniline leather, which has no pigment on the surface at all There s also bonded leather (also known as coated split leather) which has a surface covered with a thin plastic film. HOW ARE DIFFERENT MATERIALS TESTED? We test our materials thoroughly. First, we check the look and feel of the material. Then we check the thickness and softness. Next, technical tests are conducted, where the material is tested for tear strength, flexibility, colour fastness to rubbing and light, and fire resistance. To meet our standards in quality, we require that leather used on seating surfaces is able to withstand repeated flexing at a minimum rate of 20,000 times for grain leather and 10,000 times for split leather. Finally, we carry out a number of chemical tests on the materials to ensure they do not contain any forbidden substances. GLOSE thick grain leather Soft, dyed-through 1.1 mm thick grain leather that can withstand both wear and tear and strong sunlight, as it s treated with a protective fade-resistant coating. Easy to care for by vacuuming regularly and treating with ABSORB leather care set to keep the leather soft, supple and beautiful. SMIDIG thick leather Soft, hardwearing 1 mm thick leather that is treated with a thin coating to protect it from dirt. Easy to care for by vacuuming regularly and treating with ABSORB leather care set to keep the leather soft, supple and beautiful. For more information, please read the material tag. CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER ARMCHAIR There are a few simple things you can do to help keep your armchair looking great for longer. Vacuum regularly with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner since dirt can damage the surface. Remove any grease stains as soon as possible, since grease can dissolve the protective finish on the surface and damage the leather underneath. You can use our ABSORB leather cleaner and cream, which can be applied once a year to clean and protect your armchair. Please note that aniline leather like SEGLORA should NOT be treated with cleaning agents or cream (including ABSORB), as they will stain the leather rather than clean it. Instead, clean your full-grain leather armchair using the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, and if needed, wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth. Bonded leather, which is coated with a thin glossy film, doesn t need to be treated with leather cream, but it can be treated with ABSORB cleaner for bonded leather, which is specially formulated to protect and restore the shiny surface. Keep your armchair out of direct sunlight, and place it at least 40cm from any heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out. If you should get a stain on your leather armchair, remove it immediately. 6
