BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE The Mansfeld Family papers spans four generations from 1864 to 1956. They represent a sampling of materials from several family members, but primarily those of Samuel Jacob Mansfeld, the first son of Jacob Samuel Mansfeld. Jacob Samuel Mansfeld (1832-1894) arrived in the United States from Germany in 1856, working in various mining camps throughout the West before settling in Tucson 1869. On his arrival in Tucson he established the first news and bookstore in the Territory, which later became known as the Pioneer News Depot. J.S. Mansfeld and became very active in the community, he wrote the first Tucson City charter, and was appointed one of the first Regents of the University of Arizona, becoming instrumental in it success as an institution. He also was active in the city library and was one of the founding members of the Society of Arizona Pioneers. He married Eva Goldschmidt in 1878. They had four children Hanna Fredricka (1879-1942); Samuel Jacob (1881-1867) Phyllis (1883-1949) and Moses Montifore (1884-1959). Samuel (Sam) Jacob Mansfeld carried on his fathers civic activities being involved in the University of Arizona, the Arizona Pioneer s Historical Society, and founder of the Pima Pistol Club. He was also involved in various fraternal organizations, and during World War II was a captain in the Civil Defense program in Tucson. His business interests were almost as varied as his civic life. Sam was a part owner of the Eagle Milling Company with his uncle, Leo Goldschmidt, and was in the 1930s and early 1940s a partner in the jewelry store Greenwald and Adams. He also worked for his brother at Mansfield Motors. With his first wife, Vivian Ainsworth (1886-1926), he had two daughters, Ann-Eve (1908-1981) and Leonor (1909-1997). His second wife, Florence Ellen Farnsworth (1891-1967), brought three more children from a previous marriage into his family. Moses Montifore (Monte) Mansfield, Sam s brother, also was very active in the growth of Tucson. He founded and ran for 44 years Monte Mansfield Motors, which was the first Ford dealership in Arizona. He was also involved in the Arizona Pioneer s Historical Society and help to found the Tucson Airport Authority. Why Monte changed his last name to Mansfield is not known. With his first wife, Marie Kirkland, he had one son, Monte Mansfield, Jr. (1914-??). He had no children with his second wife, Eleanor Mary Walz. Three genealogical charts of the Mansfeld family are appended for use of the researcher. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Mansfeld Family Records, consisting of personal, business, and corporate, have been broken into five series: Personal Papers; Business Records; Corporate Records; Scrapbooks and Printed Material; and Photographs. The majority of the papers are from Samuel J. Mansfeld (1881-1967) and his second wife, Florence Farnsworth Mansfeld (1891-1967). The dates for this collection cover a wide span, 1862 to 1956, but the bulk dates are more limited, 1922-1956. Personal Papers, Series 1, has been divided into four sub-series: Biographical Information and Reminisces; Correspondence; Financial Records Eva Mansfeld; and Samuel Jacob Mansfeld Records. This series contains the letters, diaries, and jotted notes of the family. One of the more unusual documents is the small diary written in German by Jacob S. Mansfeld to his wife Eva giving strict instructions on how his funeral should be conducted. There are also a number of certificates (in Box 8) from various fraternal and civic groups. Included in the certificates is Jacob Mansfeld s election to the Pima County Supervisors in 1884. Business Records, Series 2, are contain the business records of Jacob Samuel Mansfeld, in specific the Tidball embezzlement case. The case concerned monies owed to both merchants in Tucson and the Federal Government by Zan L. Tidball, the U.S. Marshall in the mid-1880s. Also in Series 2 are the records p. 2

concerning the estate of C.F. Ainsworth, the father-in-law of Sam Mansfeld. Sam Mansfeld was made the executor after Mr. Ainsworth s death in 1934. Due to complications with various property sales and debts owed the final disposition of the estate did not occur until 1946. Association Records, Series 3, are the records of some of the groups that Sam Mansfeld was engaged. There are minutes from the Thirteen Club, a group of thirteen young men including Sam and Monte Mansfeld, and the minutes of the Arizona State Rifle Association. Also included in the Corporate Records are score sheets, minutes, and correspondence of the Pima Pistol Club, of which Sam Mansfeld was the founder and president. (See Series 4 for the Scrapbooks of the PPC). One other interesting item in Series 3 are Sam s notes and papers regarding the Arizona Civilian Defense Council, the group responsible for preparing Tucson for possible attack during World War II. Scrapbooks and Printed Material, Series 4, consists of various newspaper clippings and other items intended to be placed in scrapbooks and some small notices and announcements. Included in this series is a beautiful scrapbook (Scrapbook #1) by and about Jacob S. Mansfeld which includes letters from Charles Poston, Gen. George Crook, and notices of J.S. Mansfeld s appointment as regent of the University of Arizona. Monte Mansfeld also kept a scrapbook (Scrapbook #2) on his dealership and civic activities. Also included in Monte s scrapbook is an ornate resolution given to the family by the Arizona Pioneer s Society on the passing of J.S. Mansfeld. Finally, there are 10 scrapbooks (Scrapbooks #3-12), from Sam Mansfeld, on the Pima Pistol Club and the Arizona State Rifle Association, covering the dates from 1918 to 1954. These scrapbooks contain scores from various matches, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The final series, Series 5, Photographs, contains two wonderful albums and numerous family images. One of the albums (Box 9) shows various family members, University of Arizona Students, and the Los Amigo Club. The album was assembled by Monte Mansfield. Many of the images in this album date from 1900-1920 and all are very well identified there are some very good images of Eva Mansfeld and her daughters. The second album (Box 10) is not as well identified and appears to be trips to the St. Barbara and Alameda California. This album has a few images of Hanna and Phyllis (Pina) Mansfeld. There are some wonderful images in the loose photographs of family members, and of Sam and Vivian Mansfeld at Sabino Canyon, and at their home in Tucson. The other photographs in this series include a small card album of L.H. Manning and Leo Goldschmidt s trip to Mexico in 1892, card prints of St. Matthew s Military School (San Mateo, California) cadets and cabins (c.1895), and various images of unidentified Mansfeld family and friends. There are oversized photographs in Box 11, including portraits of Ann-Eve and Lenore Mansfeld, of the Williamson family, and large group shots from various pistol matches. p. 3
