Letter From The Prez Photo by Cheryl Cissell The Kentuckiana Blues Society's 25th Anniversary Celebration is Saturday, November 16 at Headliners Music Hall. Doors open at 5:30 pm with the music starting at 6:30 pm. Most of the bands on The Louisville Blues Compilation Volume II CD are donating their time to the KBS and will be at the show. Admission is $10 but it's free for KBS members so do not forget to bring your membership card. Tickets for non-members are available at Headliners when they are open and online at http:// headlinerslouisville.com/. Seating will be limited so get there early if you want a table. The upstairs balcony area will be reserved for KBS members only. WFPK's Kevin Yazell and Woodrow on the Radio will co-host the event. We'll also have at least one food truck on the premises. Natalie Carter is updating the History of the KBS presentation and it will be playing between bands. Our thanks to this year's sponsors including Four Roses Bourbon, WFPK 91.9 FM, Voluforms, Better Days Records and the Kentuckiana Blues Radio Show. This issue of Blues News is dedicated to the making of The Louisville Blues Compilation Volume II disc. It's been twenty-three years since the first compilation album was released by Scott Mullins and Rollin' & Tumblin' Records. The KBS assisted on that first release and we thought it was about time to get out another collection of Louisville's best blues music. You can pick up a copy of the CD at KBS events including the anniversary show at Headliners. As for local retail outlets, the CD is available exclusively at Better Days Records. They have two locations: 1765 Bardstown Road and 2600 W Broadway in the Lyles Mall. Many thanks to Ben Jones and his staff at Better Days Records for their support of the KBS. If you prefer digital downloads, the compilation can be purchased online at cdbaby, itunes, Amazon, Google+ and Gracenote. Byron Davies of the 100 Proof Blues band was awarded this year's Sylvester Weaver award at the Garvin Gate Blues Festival. A record crowd turned out this year since the festival restarted in 2007. The presentation of the KBS plaque to Byron took him by surprise but was well earned considering his long career in our blues community. Byron told me that October 12, the day he played at Garvin Gate and was given the award, was his dad's birthday. His dad passed away 17 years ago but Byron was sure that he was looking down from above on the event. Byron was very happy that his son, who is in the navy, and his wife Debbie were there to share it with him. It was also a bittersweet moment considering the year both Byron and bandmate Lamont Gillispie have had with their fights against cancer. Byron is in his second month of chemo and Lamont had surgery to remove the tumor on his esophagus on October 17. Please keep both of these men in your hearts and in your prayers. The Fundrazr page is still active if you wish to contribute. All money collected goes to help the guys with their medical and daily expenses. Go to https://fundrazr. com/ and search for Lamont and Byron. Each year cancer claims more than half a million people in the US alone. I hope you will also consider visiting the American Cancer Society page at http://www.cancer.org/ and making a contribution. Gary Photo by Bob Brown BLUES NEWS November 2013 3
