GARDEN CLUB FIONA D., DALIA S. & FIONA M. At Solana Ranch, there is an immense amount of enjoyable activities hosted by parent and teacher volunteers. One of the sorts of activities open to grades one through sixth is Garden Club in which is hosted by Mrs. McSherry and I hope you can enjoy all that this club has to offer. Edition 01 Gardening club is a great way to meet new people, as well and to learn new things about plants. For instance, did you know that dill and carrots don t grow well near each other, and they also look alike from above ground? And it s a great thing to grow your own food, Last Friday we made smoothies with kale, lettuce and blueberries! and maybe if you enjoy gardening you can plant your own garden at home! From planting to harvesting you can feel pride in how you helped the garden thrive and grow. While doing this activity you can also enjoy this fun experience with friends. Also once it s time to harvest, you can eat the edible crops. This club can be quite an exciting Friday avocation, and something to look forward to every week. At this delightful club McSherry has established you can practice leadership habits of synergization and proactiveness. At this club be ready to be active to take care of the garden. We synergize and show proactiveness when we plant seeds together, weed the plants, harvest, and enjoy the final product of these organic foods with each other. Some things that you can do at this club are weeding, planting, harvesting, sometimes making salads and smoothies, and watering. Last Friday we made smoothies with kale, lettuce and blueberries! -Fiona M. Some things we have planted include carrots, kale, lettuce, radishes, broccoli, eggplants, and wildflowers. Some of these plants grow to be really big, although some are small. I hope you will think to go to Gardening Club in the future! 2
BOOK REVIEW: GIRAFFES CAN T DANCE FIONA M. Giraffes can t dance is a book for all dancers, animal lovers, and the world! It is about - you guessed it - a giraffe that can t dance? Or can the giraffe dance? Read the book to find out! Who is Giles Andreae? Andreae is an author who brings life to his stories in many wonderful fashions. The morals are significantly beautiful and his characters are very relatable. Other children s books of his are: Dinosaurs Galore!, I Love My Daddy, I Love My Mummy, et cetera. Giles Andreae is a British artist, poet and greeting card writer, creator of the Purple Ronnie and Edward Monkton series. This author writes great books! 3
Edition 01 BOOK REVIEW: THE NERDS SERIES a great book for NERDS An Adventurous Book Series FIONA M. The NERDS series is a great book for everyone. It has adventures and jam packed superheroes who save the world. NERDS stands for National Espionage Rescue and Defense Society. This series has heroes gone rogue, multiple Earth s, science, crazy tech, and more. It s is a great book for all ages and it teaches you different codes, and it is absolutely hilarious. This series is amazing and I recommend it for you! Who is Michael Buckley? Michael Buckley, A.K.A Beanpole. Is the author of this series. He is also an internet celebrity, comedian, and vlogger. He also wrote the SIsters Grimm series. More books by Michael Buckley are The Sisters Grimm, Raging Sea, and many more. HOLIDAY CHEER FIONA D., FIONA M., DALIA S. PHOTOS: SAMANTHA F. Some families celebrate Christmas, others also celebrate Hanukkah, some families celebrate Kwanzaa, and other families celebrate different holidays that aren t near the holiday season. But no matter what holiday you celebrate, there are different traditions within those holidays. Let s look at some more common traditions, starting with Christmas. Most people who celebrate Christmas have a Christmas tree in their house, decorated with ornaments that represent their loyalty to the Christian beliefs. Families often have a great meal all together on Christmas Eve. A more recent tradition is to hang up the decorations on Thanksgiving and leave them up until Christmas. 4
HOLIDAY CHEER (CONTINUED) One other tradition is when people put up stockings on the fireplace because of this old folktale. There once was a family who was very poor, one of the men s daughters wanted to get married, but they didn t have enough money. It is said that on Christmas a stocking with enough money for the girl to get married was hung on the fireplace. A Hanukkah tradition is at night after sunset we light the candles. Every day we add another candle till the Menorah is full. Hanukkah lasts 8 nights. Here is the backstory on Hanukkah. The Jews had oil to last 1 night but, the oil lasted 8 nights and that s why we have Hanukkah. So now we light the candles 8 nights in a row in the winter.
