Artistic entrance examination Bachelor in Visual Arts Description and practical information 1. When? Dates of the artistic entrance examinations 2018: Students can choose between the following two options: Option 1: July 2 and 3, 2018 (two-day examination including an interview, starting July 2 at 9h). Option 2: September 3 and 4, 2018 (two-day examination including an interview, starting September 3 at 9h). 2. Where? Location: Entrance examination for Graphic Design: Keizerstraat 14, 2nd and 3rd floor, 2000 Antwerp. Entrance examination for Fashion: Handelsmuseum/Trade museum, Coquilhatstraat 16, 2000 Antwerp Entrance examination for In Situ³: Dambruggestraat 342, 2060 Antwerpen Entrance examinations for Painting, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture, Costume design, Jewellery Design: Mutsaardstraat 31, 2000 Antwerp (in the big hall, near the security building). 3. What to bring with you on the 1st day A typed curriculum vitae indicating the studies you have already completed; A typed or handwritten motivation of your choice of study (discipline); A portfolio with your work, drawings, sketches, posters, prints, photos, pictures of your art objects (such as sculptures), etc.; Materials (see the specific requirements listed below for each discipline). 4. Assignments and materials to bring according to the programme Photography 1. Creation of a photo series around a theme imposed by the Examination Commission. This assignment will be explained at the beginning of the entrance examination. 2. Discussion of this picture series during the interview, which starts in the afternoon of day 2. During the interview your portfolio, your curriculum vitae and your motivation will be discussed as well. 3. Written test with general questions, to assess your cultural knowledge, at the start of the examination. 4. Oral analysis of a few photos presented to the candidate Materials to bring along: digital camera (a pocket camera is also accepted). Graphic design Home Assignment: (consists of two assignments, to prepare in advance and bring with you on the first day of the artistic entrance examination) 1. A visual diary. Create a visual report on figures and objects in your daily surroundings and the public space. Use various techniques at your discretion drawings, sketches, photographic and/or typographic elements, collages, in a booklet of at least 16 pages. Decide on a format size and design a cover for your diary (front, spine and back cover) holding your name and a title. Create a personal, artistic and original graphic diary, which you can present during the entrance examination. 2. Select a graphic designer and one of his/her designs: motivate and discuss your choice in a short paper (max. 3 pages). School Assignment: 1. Observation assignment with objects. 2. Creative processing of the observation assignment. 3. Design assignment according to the imposed theme. 4. Illustrative assignment to text. 5. An interview where we assess your motivation, cultural interests, artistic background and discuss your home assignments. Bring along an example of a specific graphic design which appeals to you. Jewellery Design & Gold- and Silversmithing Home Assignment: To bring along on the first day of the entrance examination: 1. Your extensive curriculum vitae. 2. Your portfolio. 3. A written discussion with images of at least three contemporary jewellery designers who you personally appreciate (in Word). 4. A handwritten motivation of your study choice (min. 1 A4). 5. School Assignment: These assignments will be explained in more detail at the beginning of the entrance examination. 1. Observation skills test: drawing of a still life on various types and sizes of drawing papers (day 1). 2. To assess your level of creativity: creative interpretation of the assignment above (day 1). 3. Different experiments on 3-D designing with the use of different available materials (day 2). 4. An interview where we assess your motivation, cultural interests and artistic background (day 2). 5. A written test with general knowledge questions (day 2). Materials to bring along: glue, utility (Stanley) knife, scissors, ruler, tape, various types and sizes of drawing papers A1, A2, A3 and A4 (you are obliged to bring along a few sheets of paper from each size), Indian ink, poster paint (gouache), drawing pen, pencils, charcoal, eraser Fashion 1. Observation test: drawing of a fashion silhouette in pencil or charcoal or other black/white techniques. 2. Creative processing of a colour composition and processing in watercolour. 3. Design assignment according to imposed theme. 4. Interview. Materials to bring along on the 1 st day: canvas size A3 + A4 + A2 + watercolour paper, pencils and charcoal, brushes and pencils, watercolour paints, water cup (noggin), mixing pots, eraser, etc.. Costume design 1. Observation assignment of objects: drawing and sketching of a still life on drawing paper, format A3 Technique: a) black/white: (charcoal, Conté crayon, pencil or diluted ink...) b) detail in colour, technique of your choice (acrylic, gouache, tempera, watercolour, coloured pencils...). 2. Creative processing of the observation assignment: interpret a certain space/location to a dramatically loaded image on drawing paper, format A3. Technique: free. 3. Exercise on 3-dimensional design. Materials to bring along: Paper, scissors, sticky tape (optional: stapler), large sheet of sketch paper/newspaper/pattern sheet, pins (approx.. 80x10 cm) 4. Drawing (day 2) of a number of costume designs in colour (A3) of characters based on a text (dramatic text, fairy tale, story etc.). This text will be given to the student on the first day of the entrance examination. Materials to bring along: Sketch and canvas size A4 and A3, crayons, pencils, brushes, poster paint (gouache), water cup, eraser, etc. 5. Written test with general questions to assess your cultural knowledge, at the beginning of the entrance examination. To be prepared for the entrance exam for Costume Design, candidates are asked to have a good general knowledge of contemporary social events. A basic knowledge of the cultural scene in Flanders is also expected: candidates are asked to have attended at least ten theater shows (various kinds). Basic sewing and stitching knowledge is required to begin the study. During the practical tests drawing skills and the ability to create in 3D will be assessed. Fine Arts - option: Sculpture 1. Observation assignment: drawing of a plaster portrait bust at actual size, preferably in pencil or charcoal. 2. Modelling test: modelling of a full-size plaster cast. 3. Create an artistic intervention in one more of the atelier rooms of the Sculpture department. Make at least one drawing. During the interview you will present and explain your creations. 4. During the interview you will be shown some pictures of famous sculptures, which you will need to discuss. Materials to bring along: drawing paper around 70 x 100 cm, charcoal, pencil, eraser. Equipment for the modelling test is available. Fine Arts - option: In situ ³ 1. Observation assignment of a still life in charcoal and/or pencil. Materials: drawing paper 100 x 70 cm, charcoal, pencil, eraser. 2. At least 3 Perspective sketching of the atelier (size A4), free choice of materials. 3. Spatial exercise: create a spatial composition in a volume of 30x30x30 cm. 4. Discussion of three exhibitions that you recently visited. Describe each exhibition on a separate page with some exhibition images. Materials to bring along: drawing paper, charcoal, pencil, eraser, materials of your choice to create the spatial composition and volume. Fine Arts - option: Painting 1. Observation assignment: drawing of a plaster cast at actual size on drawing paper (approx. 50 x 70 cm up to 80 x 100 cm). Material: preferably charcoal or conté crayon, pencil or diluted ink. 2. Painting of a still life on canvas or primed (50 x 70 cm up to 80 x 100 cm). Choice of paint is free (oil paint, acrylic, gouache, tempera, watercolour). 3. Painting; self-selected theme, on canvas, paper or cardboard. 4. An interview to ascertain your motivation, cultural interests and artistic background. Materials to bring along: - Drawing paper, canvas, paint or other material of choice as described above. - Portfolio containing at least 5 paintings, supplemented with drawings and sketches. Only original work will be taken in consideration (no pictures of own work). Extra photos of own work can be added to clarify. It is always better to show more works than show too little. Fine Arts - option: Printmaking 1. a. Observation assignment drawing of a natural object (black & white). b. Creative interpretation of an object Material: charcoal or pencil. 2. Creative drawing exercise in black & white of a chosen theme Material: ink (pen or brush). 3. Observation assignment: drawing of a plaster cast Material: pencil or charcoal or other black & white techniques. 4. Perspective drawing.
