About us The Hydrographic Society UK is an independent, non-profit making, non-governmental, learned professional society. We provide a forum for all those involved in activities related to hydrography and associated disciplines, both in the UK and the overseas. The Hydrographic Society UK encompasses a wide range of specialisms and activities. Our Individual and Corporate Members operate in many sectors including surveying for nautical charting, offshore resources, construction, engineering, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, oceanography, geology and the manufacture and supply of related products. Our Purpose The Society aims to provide members with a range of relevant support and valued specialist services. We endeavour to raise awareness of the science of surveying at sea, and protect and promote the status of the profession. We provide a local, national and international focus for the discipline, and seek to advance the education and training of practitioners and those engaged in the study of hydrography and related subjects.

Our Strategic Objectives to promote the science of surveying in both salt and fresh water environments, including the adjacent shore and hinterland to encourage the broadest possible inclusion of people and organisations interested in hydrography and related sciences and create a network for their interaction to promote the dissemination and free exchange of information between all those engaged in hydrography and related disciplines to promote the highest level of accuracy and diligence in the application of hydrography and related sciences in accordance with internationally-defined standards to promote the advancement of education and training for those engaged in or intending to engage in hydrography and associated disciplines to offer support and guidance to those seeking Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in hydrographic surveying and associated sciences and technologies to promote the broadest pursuit of technological innovation for the purpose of hydrography and related sciences and technologies to raise awareness of the career opportunities offered by hydrographic surveying and associated professions to promote the highest possible standards of health and safety by and for the application of hydrography and related sciences

Post-Nominal & Fellowship Scheme The Hydrographic Society UK's Post-Nominal & Fellowship Scheme is open to all Individual Members although the precise entitlements and post-nominal letters offered vary according to their category of membership. The post-nominal classifications included in the scheme are Associate Member (AHydSoc) which is reserved for Student & New Graduate members, Member (MHydSoc) and Fellow (FHydSoc). Fellowship is awarded to members, nominated by their peers, for their outstanding contribution to the profession and/or a sustained and exceptional contribution to the Society. There are no additional charges associated with the scheme, other than those which apply to the relevant membership category. Our members Membership of the Society is global and broadly based, being drawn from approximately 45 countries. Individual Members represent all levels of expertise in the fields of hydrography, civil engineering, oceanography, geophysics and marine resource management, amongst others. Corporate Member organisations include oil and gas exploration companies, contract survey companies, port authorities, government, military and public service authorities, petroleum companies, research and educational institutions, telecommunications organisations, engineering consultants, acoustic, dredging and salvage contractors, oceanographic and survey equipment manufacturers and surveyors in all aspects of private practice. Membership is open to all individuals and organisations with any of these interests. No formal qualifications are needed.

What our members say Membership of The Hydrographic Society UK is essential in order to remain current with industry practices and new developments. The advantages of membership of The Hydrographic Society UK are enormous. It enables the Society to continue to organise, and you to attend, its increasingly popular events which contribute toward Continuing Professional Development. You get the opportunity to advertise your business, at a very modest cost, in Soundings magazine, the e-bulletin and on the website. I recently put out a tender to eight or nine organisations for the various elements of two entire vessel's worth of integrated survey system. Time was, as ever, short and I drew up the entire bid list from the Society's website. If your company wasn't there it was not invited to tender. From this, and many other points of view, the site is a very useful resource. As an Individual Member you get to see all the adverts for job vacancies which your employer cunningly removes prior to circulation, and you can advertise yourself as a consultant on the Society's website. The cost of membership is not as great as you might think and may be allowable against tax either as a charitable donation or as a professional fee. Some enlightened employers will reimburse your subscription fee.
