nvws.org September 2012 September s Meeting Wednesday, September 12th @ 7:00 pm Mesquite Club 702 E. St. Louis Ave. Las Vegas, NV 89104 Board Meeting Wed, September 12th@ 5:30pm September s Program Critique Meet Bring those paintings (up to 3), finished or in progress, for a lively discussion of what you can do to add that WOW factor. Bill Fravel, Sharon Menary and Ed Hoag will each lead a discussion group. Fall Show Entries Due Bring a disk with your.jpg entries, the entry form and fees. If you are not able to supply digital images, you may bring your unframed painting(s) to the meeting to be photographed. Potluck Bring your favorite dish to share with your friends and fellow artists. Reminder Time to return the videos that you rented all summer and rent some new ones!! Welcome back everyone, hope you had a great summer with plenty of time to play with your paints and brushes. Your NVWS board members and committee chairs have been working behind the scenes to plan a variety of activities for the coming year. We have workshops, demonstrations, paint-outs, shows and much more in the works. Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. and will be a potluck, so bring your favorite recipe to share with your friends and fellow artists. As with any club there are always changes and when you pick up your directory you will notice we have several vacant volunteer opportunities available. Currently we need a Parliamentarian, Hospitality Chair, Historian, Co-Chair for Western Fed and Video Librarian. If you are interested in any of these positions, your help would be greatly appreciated. The Fall Show entries are due at this first meeting and to participate you must have paid your dues for the current year. So check your records and if you have inadvertently forgot to mail your dues payment, please bring a check for $40 along with your Fall Show entry form and fee to the meeting. Please see the Fall Show entry form for details regarding submission. The Birgit O Conner workshop planned for October is not yet full, so please contact Sharon Menary if you are interested in attending. We also have a few frames left from the Western Fed show last year, so please contact Ed Hoag if you re interested in these. I look forward to working with all of you to create another great year for our society. There are so many new products, materials, and techniques to enhance watercolor paintings; it is an exciting time to be an artist. My goal this year is to paint more frequently for fun and be less attached to the outcome. When I set my expectations too high, I find myself avoiding the process. That s a shame, because once I begin I become so immersed in the imaginative and creative aspect of painting, the stress disappears and I can play. Let s hear it for more play time, we can all use that. Hope to see you at the meeting. Barbara Stanton, NVWS President September 2012 Nevada Watercolor Society page 1

From Our NVWS Member BARBARA YOERG From the Sketchbook of Barbara Yoerg After finishing my novel, the in-flight magazine and perusing the Sky Mall catalog on a flight recently, I pulled-out my sketchbook and pondered what to draw. Then I looked out the window down 37,000 feet and saw color country where the Green River enters the Colorado. The landscape was extraordinary and I knew that there were only a few minutes to capture the essence of the panoramic vista. By reducing the scene to basic shapes of squares, triangles, circles, cruciform and spirals, a design emerged. The resulting three-inch by five-inch thumbnail sketch was completed within a couple of minutes. Once home, value was added to the sketch using transparent watercolor. Happy with the results, a larger sketch was made altering some of the shapes enhancing the design. With some tweaks in the overall design, I m ready to make the sketch into a full-size painting. I hope that this will inspire you to carry a sketchbook and use it whether you fly, ride in a car, train, or bus, then paint with wild abandon.
