1 1. Laying in the construction lines This step is the standard technique used by animators and comic book artists to build up the construction lines for the head. Refer to the first image in the PDF to help you with this step. It is done by first lightly drawing a circle and then a convex triangle joined to this. A central line is then drawn down the face, follow the contour of the face as you do this. Then draw 2 lines across the face to position the eyes, and then a line for the nose and mouth. The next stage is to lightly define the eyes, nose and the mouth, you can then add the ear, the eyebrows and eyelashes. Once you have lightly laid in the head you can lay in the neck, shoulders and clothing. Refer to the second image in the PDF to assist you with this. 2 2 Defining the head All of the construction work is laid in and can now be defined. Use an electric eraser to remove all of the construction lines, and then define the finished lines with a sharp 2B pencil. We suggest using the 300gsm watercolour paper in this project. This paper is of a medium texture on the facing side and smooth on the backside. The smooth side is the better of the sides to use for drawing. Remember to keep your construction lines very light and when defining any lines keep a sharp point on the pencil. of Mont Marte International Ltd ACN 1015898 Copyright ofcopyright Mont Marte International Pty Ltd ACNPty 101589897

1 3 3. Roughing in the hair Refer to the first image in the PDF and select a hair type that you would like to create. The hair can be thought of in clumps or masses that flow in a certain direction. These are called ribbons. Lay these in with light strokes. 4 4. Drawing the rose Refer to the second image and recreate the rose. Start with the outline and work from the outside in and in a circular fashion moving to the middle. Create the leaves by lightly sketching in the shape and then add the serrated edges and then add the veins. 5 5. Defining it all Your drawing will be fairly light at this stage. Define everything to the same level so it is all balanced. If you want to add more detail to the hair, you can do it at this stage. Build it up slowly.

6 6. Detailing In this stage we finish the eyes and ears. The eyes are actually quite simple and can be created in 4 steps; 1) Draw in the eye profile. 2) Fully shade the iris. 3) Shade the top 3/4 of the iris 4) Draw the pupil again. 5) Remove the highlights with an electric eraser. 7 7. Painting This lesson predominantly covers the drawing side of creating a Manga themed piece but we have added a little step regarding painting the piece with watercolour. If you would like to add this step to your drawing we have used the 18 piece Half Pan Watercolour Set and used the following steps: 1) Create a skin colour from White, Yellow and a touch of Red and apply it onto the face, body and neck. 2) Darken the skin mix with some Yellow Ochre and a touch of Umber and apply it to the left side of the face and the right eye socket. 3) Paint the hair Purple 4) Paint the rose Red. 5) Paint the leaves Green and 6) Paint the eyes a Light Blue.
