INTRODUCON Asphalt Emulsion As asphalt cement is not fluid and not applicable under ambient conditions, different methods have been used to increase applicability. At high temperatures energy consumption and combustion risk increases; on the other hand, when solvent chemicals are increased, risk of flammability and toxic factors increase. Because of these disadvantages, experts have chosen to thin asphalt cement with water and this material obtained is called the asphalt emulsion. In production of asphalt emulsion chemicals called emulgators are used. These emulgators become + or charged when dissolved in water. Depending on these charges, they are named anionic or cationic emulgators. Asphalt emulsions are also divided into two general groups in relation to the emulgators used: anionic asphalt emulsions and cationic asphalt emulsions. These groups can be divided into subgroups depending on their setting properties: Rapid setting emulsions, medium setting emulsions and slow setting emulsions. Chemical Composition of the Asphalt Emulsion Asphalt Cement : %40-70 Water (Softened) : %30-50 Chemical (Emulgator) : %0.2-2.5 Solvent : %0-30 Additive (DOP) : %0-4 Additive (Latex) : %0-1 Emulgator Types Anionic Emulgators (Negatively Charged) Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxide They make the emulsion alkaline. ASPHALT ACHINES AND EQUIPENTS USAGE AREAS OF ASPHALT EULSIONS Asphalt emulsions are mostly for surface coating, adhesion layer, coating layer, patch works, slurry-seal layer and moisture preventing works in cement foundations. In addition, it is applied as darkening layer in airports. A. Surface Coating In accordance with the Road Scientific Specification, for surface coating RS-1, CRS-1 veya CRS-2 bitumen binders complying with the TS 1082:2007 standard. B. Adhesion and Asphalt Layer usage areas of asphalt emulsions In accordance with the Road Scientific Specification, SS-1, SS-1h, CSS-1, CSS-1h type asphalt emulsions are suitable for coating and RS-1, RS-2, CRS-1 and CRS-2 asphalt emulsions are suitable for adhesion. C. Slurry-Seal and icro Surfacing Applications As binders, slow setting cationic or anionic SS-1, SS-1h or CSS-1, CSS-1h emulsions manufactured in compliance with the TSE standards can be used. To enhance adhesion, to prolong the life of the binder, to prevent softening and fracturing upon heat changes and to ensure fixation, modified asphalt emulsions can be used. D. Cold Application and Patch Works CRS-1 or CRS-2 type rapid setting cationic asphalt emulsions, modified in accordance with the TS EN 12591:2011 standard can be used as asphalt emulsions. This asphalt emulsion has high adhesion due to the modifier substance in it. After setting, adversities such as detachment from the asphalt etc. are not experienced since it has high adhesion and has rubber based additives in it. E. Darkening Layer In general in military airports, a thin bituminous layer called the Fog-Seal layer is spread to strengthen the vision area which reduces in time as the colour of the apron is lightened. To this end, RS-1 or CRS-1 type asphalt emulsions are applied. F. Preventing oisture in Cement Foundations As is known, curing plays an important role in manufacturing with cement. Rapid evaporation of the water in it causes cracks. Thus, especially in summer, a membrane layer that will prevent rapid evaporation of water is required. RS-1, RS-2 and CRS-1, CRS-2 type asphalt emulsions meet his requirement. 9

ETES 20 ASPHALT EULSION PRODUCON SYSTE This model that can provide continuous and high capacity production on a specially produced chassis, ensures all the properties that a modern system must have, thanks to its product diversity. The main reason that this model is preferred is that it can also produce PB based emulsions which has been developing in recent years. As production is uninterrupted and continuous, the system was designed as a movable chassis with double solvent tanks. In the production process, the pumps for liquid material such as bitumen, solution, solvent, DOP, latex are operated by an invertor and they have the capacity to feed materials to the process at desired ratios. In addition, a flow meter is placed at the rear of each pump, ensuring that the amount the system requires during pumping are compatible with the data from the flowmeter. The bitumen and the solvent are passed through the static mixer at the prescribed ratios so that the bitumen has the desired penetration values. In addition, the DOP material is mixed at the static mixer at a certain ratio to enhance the adhesive capacity of the bitumen. The bitumen from the static mixer stably reaches the colloidal mill. The solution is prepared in tanks manufactured from polypropylene (PP). A weighing unit was designed for the other additives in the prescription. Hence, all additives are arranged easily and are stably sent to the solution tanks. The system has two different equipments to heat the water necessary for the solution. The cold water from outside is easily heated with electric heaters or a plate heat exchanger placed at the emulsion product outlet. In virtue of this contemporary practice, time and heat energy is saved. The solution, the temperature and ph value of which is suitably adjusted and which is homogenously mixed, passes thorough the 316 quality stainless steel in-line vertical centrifuge pump, to reach the colloidal mill. ASPHALT ACHINES AND EQUIPENTS The bitumen and the solution that reach the mill are mixed, broken up at high speed, to form a perfect emulsion. The bitumen emulsion, the approximate temperature is 80-90 C, is passed through a plate heat exchanger to decrease the temperature to 60 C. Subsequently, the other additives are added by the help of a different static mixer and different bitumen emulsions can be produced. After the samples taken from the sampling valve are tested and approved, the bitumen emulsion is delivered to the storage tanks. The whole system is either full automatic or can be controlled manually. 15

ETES 12 ASPHALT EULSION PRODUCON SYSTE This odel preferred for quick and convenient installations is mostly suitable for sold slurry seal applications. As production is uninterrupted and continuous, the system was designed as a container As production is uninterrupted and continuous, the system was designed as a movable chassis with double or single solvent tank(s). A weighing unit was designed for the other additives (emulgator, acid and stabiliser) in the prescription. Hence, all additives are arranged easily and are stably sent to the solution tanks. This dosing unit is used externally and can be integrated into the system if desired. The whole system is either full automatic or can be controlled manually. We, Okur akina, prefer imported bitumen emulsion mills (colloid mills), having a superior crushing capacity (0.1 μm crushing size), with constant or variable revolution. Depending on the choice of the customers, we can also use domestic mills in our asphalt emulsion systems. 16

CBTES 30 CUTBACK ASPHALT EULSION PRODUCON SYSTE The production system, which has been included recently in our product range, is mostly preferred by the construction firms in developing countries. Okur akina can provide petroleum based bitumen emulsion (Cut-Back) instead of the water based bitumen emulsion depending on the customer s choice; this system has a high capacity and is sensitive and stable, in virtue of the research conducted. In the production process, the bitumen is sucked from the filter by the invertor bitumen pump, passes through the flowmeter and is sent to the static mixer in accordance with the prescribed ratios. Similarly, kerosene is sucked from the filter by the invertor pump and is sent to the static mixer in accordance with the prescribed precise ratios, thanks to the signals from the flowmeter. All equipments are exproof. The static mixer designed by us, Okur akina, is manufactured from stainless steel of quality 316, and is the heart of the system in virtue of its homogenous mixing capacity. The bitumen and the kerosene reaching the static mixer are homogenously mixed to forma perfect Cut Back emulsion. The Cut-Back bitumen emulsion is tested by the samples taken from the sampling valve and is sent to the storage tanks. The whole system is either full automatic or can be controlled and operated manually, by a PLC. CBTES 30 CUTBACK 22

LABTES ASPHALT EULSION PRODUCON SYSTE This model, which provides production under laboratory conditions, is preferred for being movable as well as being able to manufacture different products at very small scales. Bitumen emulsion producers desire to get results quickly with the least cost to increase product quality and to see the performances of different additives. This desire makes laboratory type bitumen emulsion production system indispensable. In the production process, the bitumen and the solution pumps are operated by an invertor and they have the capacity to feed materials to the process at desired ratios. In addition, a flowmeter is placed at the rear of each pump, ensuring that the amount the system requires during pumping are compatible with the data from the flowmeter. The bitumen tank has a volume of 30 litres and is manufactured of stainless steel of quality 316, with an agitator. The bitumen pump, operated by an invertor, stably delivers the bitumen to the mill with the signals it takes from the flowmeter or the digital counter. The solution tank has a volume of 30 litres and is manufactured of stainless steel of quality 316, with an agitator and electric heater. The solution pump, operated by an invertor, stably delivers the bitumen to the mill with the signals it takes from the flowmeter or the digital counter. All equipments are manufactured of stainless steel of quality 316. The bitumen and the solution that reach the mill are mixed, broken up at high speed, to form a perfect emulsion. The bitumen emulsion is tested using the samples taken from the sampling valve and is stored. The whole system is either full automatic or can be controlled and operated manually, by a PLC.
