RA Ref Number: 36 Revision: 3 Project/Job Number Reference Insert Job Number Approval Date: 30/03/2018 RA Description: Installing Trunking Next Review Date: 01/04/2019 Notes: Please refer to Safe Working Practices 36 for definitions of items in this assessment. Created by: Lee Davies Risk Assessment Method & Scoring The summary risk assessment is calculated as Likelihood x Consequence and categorised as follows; 1 to 6 = 7 to 16 = 17 to 25 = High Risk Issued by: Issue Date: Insert Name Insert Date TASK HAZARDS PERSONS AFFECTED INITIAL RISK LEVEL CONTROL MEASURES REVISED RISK LEVEL Injuries from carrying / moving Injuries from cutting / setting Engineer / others present Likelihood 4 Engineer Likelihood 4 Engineers do not carry bundles of trunking through buildings alone, another person is present to open doors, warn others etc. Trunking is stored safely and not left lying around as a trip hazard. A dedicated work area is established for the cutting / setting of trunking, and spare lengths are kept here. Only the amount of trunking to be used straight away is taken to the work area, others are left in storage until they are required. Only engineers who are trained to do so install / cut Engineers use hand tools that are in good condition, with sharp blades that are not damaged or prone to snapping. Trunking is cut on a flat surface. Trunking is held firmly whilst it is being cut, either on a workbench, or other suitable surface. Trunking is drilled for fixings while it is flat on the work surface, if a full length has to be drilled / set, another person holds the trunking during this work to stop it from moving. Where possible pre made angles and bends are used to remove the need for on-site manufacture. RA Number: 36 - Issue Revision: 3 Page 1 of 5

TASK HAZARDS PERSONS AFFECTED INITIAL RISK LEVEL CONTROL MEASURES REVISED RISK LEVEL Injuries caused while lidding Trapped fingers, cuts. Engineer Likelihood 4 Only engineers who are trained to do so fit lidding to Lid edges are filed down to remove any sharp burrs prior to fitting. If a full length is to be lidded, this is carried out by two persons, one to support the weight, while the other person fits the lid. Steel trunking lids are cut so as to place half turn buttons where they will fully support the lid for it s whole length. RA Number: 36 - Issue Revision: 3 Page 2 of 5

Safe Working Practice: 36 Installing Trunking 1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this guide is to highlight safe working practices for: Installing Trunking THIS MUST NOT BE TREATED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING. 2 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Operators must wear Safety Boots/Shoes incorporating steel toe-caps CDI issued work wear Dust masks where appropriate Ear protectors - where appropriate. 3 BEFORE Trunking is used to house cabling where tray is not suitable. Typically where the containment run is on show, or where mechanical protection is required. CDI Group use three basic types of trunking; Steel in sizes of 50mm x 50mm up to 150mm x 150mm PVC Maxi trunking in sizes of 50mm x 50mm up to 150mm x 150mm PVC Mini trunking in sizes of 18mm x 25mm up to 38mm x 25mm. 4 DURING WORK Steel Cable Trunking Trunking shall be manufactured from mild steel, treated with primer and galvanised in accordance with BS: 729. Trunking up to and including 100mm x 75mm shall be of not less than 1.2mm gauge and sizes above 100mm x 75mm shall be of not less than 1.6mm gauge. Self-tapping screws shall secure the covers of the trunking, junctions, etc. All joints in the trunking system shall be made using purpose-made connection sleeves supplied by the manufacturer of the All junctions, tees, bends and similar accessories shall be supplied by the manufacturer of the trunking and fitted by an approved method. All junctions, tees, bends and the like shall be gusseted and provided with approved earth bonding connections. Expansion joints shall be fitted at not more than 15m intervals in straight lengths of They shall be self-adjusting, fitted with copper braid bonding strip. Trunking shall be fixed by suitable methods at intervals of not more than 1500mm on straight runs and adjacent to changes of direction. Any brackets shall be galvanised in accordance with BS: 729. RA Number: 36 - Issue Revision: 3 Page 3 of 5

Any screw heads inside the trunking shall be of the countersunk type, and include a washer of suitable size. PVC Trunking Non-metallic trunking shall be formed from rigid PVC and covers shall be of the clip-on type, arranged to overlap the sides of the Sections of trunking shall be connected together by coupling pieces, and changes of direction and junctions shall all be made using accessories manufactured by the trunking manufacturer. The trunking and accessories shall be installed and fixed in accordance with the manufacturer s recommendations. Trunking shall be fixed by screws through the back wall of the trunking, at intervals of not more than 1500mm on straight runs and adjacent to changes of direction, or at closer centres if so recommended by the manufacturer. Expansion joints shall be fitted in straight lengths of trunking at the spacing recommended by the manufacturer. Any screw heads inside the trunking shall be countersunk, and include a washer of suitable size. Mini trunking will be fixed using screws through the back wall of the trunking, and will use clip over type fittings of the same manufacture as the Skirting / Dado Trunking. Skirting/dado trunking shall comprise a back plate and a clip-on front fascia, of metal or PVC construction. It shall be suitable for use in any location and shall be of the size required by the particular Specification. Where outlets are required, they shall be flush-mounted within the trunking and shall where possible, match the other wall-mounted outlets used in the same area. The outlets shall be mounted in purpose-made accessory boxes. The boxes used shall be made to maintain the cable screening at outlet positions, and shall comply with BS: 4662. The trunking manufacturer shall make all corners, end caps and other fittings. They shall be extruded or cast of the same base material as the trunking to ensure that the screening effectiveness of the installation is maintained at all points along a run and at changes in direction. The trunking shall be fixed using countersunk screws through the back plate into plugged holes, with a suitable sized washer. When used as skirting trunking, a 10mm gap shall be left between the underside of the trunking and the floor slab or screed to allow for any deviation in the floor slab and for any future carpet or floor covering to be inserted. The various component parts shall be provided with earthing points so as to ensure the effective earthing of the complete trunking as an exposed conductive part in accordance with BS: 7671 Internal roughness, burrs, swarf, filings, sharp corners, etc. will be removed from trunking and accessories before wiring is installed. RA Number: 36 - Issue Revision: 3 Page 4 of 5

5 AFTER WORK Cable Trunking Lidding / Finish. All covers will be arranged to be removable, except that sections of trunking passing through walls, floors, etc., will have fixed covers for the thickness of the wall and floor plus 25mm or so. Where trunking is installed with the lid on the bottom, the cables will be retained within the trunking by means of purpose made cable retainers located at 500mm intervals. CDI GROUP LTD PLACES GREAT IMPORTANCE ON EVERYONE'S SAFETY: FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE MAY RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION RA Number: 36 - Issue Revision: 3 Page 5 of 5
