Facts Title: KORANET (Korean scientific cooperation network with the ERA) Aim: To intensify and strengthen the S&T cooperation between Korea and the European Research Area Financed by: 7th Framework Programme, Capacities Programme, International Cooperation, Coordination Action, ERA-NET EC Budget: 2,4 Mio. Euro (total project budget: 2,9 Mio.) What are the objectives of KORANET? Improving information exchange and cooperation between Korean and European research communities Exchanging best practices as regards the planning and implementation of S&T policies and international S&T cooperation Promoting the cooperation between Korean and European research communities Analysing and further developing of existing cooperation instruments Coordinating bilateral approaches of EU Member States/Associated Countries and Korea Specifying priority thematic areas for cooperation Establishing an appropriate framework for strategic cooperation Developing a one-stop agency for Korean S&T interests Learning from completed and ongoing ERA-NETs (good practice) Developing and implementing a full concept for a joint funding programme in a thematic area (based on a pilot joint funding scheme) Increasing Korean participation in the EU Research Framework Programme

These objectives will be reached through Implementation of a knowledge-based dialogue between programme owners in EU Member States and Associated Countries and Korea Mutual learning through mapping exercises, foresight studies and analytical reports Information gathering and dissemination on EU-Korean S&T cooperation opportunities Networking thematic and regional competence networks/clusters in Europe and Korea Identification of options for joint funding activities of programme owners and development of respective implementation scenarios Implementation of a sustainable (pilot) joint funding scheme and assessment of its effectiveness and efficiency

KORANET work packages WP 1: Analysis, monitoring, review (WP leader: NRF and British Council) Mapping regional approaches: reports and specific studies on S&T cooperation, analysis of instruments of cooperation WP 2: Strategy and foresight (WP leader: Centre for Social Innovation) Strategic discussions, setting framework objectives, identifying areas of common interest WP 3: Joint funding (WP leader: Centre National de Recherche Scientifique) Development and implementation of a (pilot) joint funding scheme WP 4: Joint activities (WP leader: Technical Research Centre of Finland) Continuous scientific and policy dialogue (annual conferences, workshops, brokerage and information events, networking activities) WP 5: Organisation and management (WP leader: German Aerospace Center) General coordination of the project
