From Orange, cut a 12½ x 14½ piece for the background and three 2½ x 2½ patches. 2. From Purple, cut two 2½ strips. From the strips, cut eight 2½ x 2½ patches. Copyright 2011 All Rights Reserved Visit www.patricklose.com 3. From Yellow, cut two 2½ strips. From the strips, cut ten 2½ x 2½. The star appliques will be cut from the remainder. 4. From Black, cut two 2¼ strips for the binding and set them aside. The bat applique will be cut from the remainder. 5. Trace the templates onto the paper side of your fusible adhesive leaving approximately ½ between tracings. 6. Roughly cut the templates from the adhesive just outside of the traced line. 7. Place the adhesive templates onto the wrong side of their corresponding fabrics and fuse in place according to manufacturer s instructions. 8. Neatly cut the appliques from the fabrics on the traced template lines. 9. Peel the paper backing from the appliques and arrange them on the lower right corner area of the background referring to the illustration or photo for placement. Fuse appliques into place. 11. Place a piece of Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer behind the applique area and satin stitch or blanket stitch the raw edges, using Sulky Premium 40 wt rayon thread. Remove the stabilizer after stitching. 12. Refer to the Piecing Diagrams and proceed with piecing the quilt top. 13. Sandwich top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. I meanered in the sky background and crosshatched the patchwork. 14. Bind as usual, using the Black binding strips created in step 4, above. 15. Add a hanging sleeve, if desired. Grandma s Popcorn Balls INGREDIENTS 2 quarts popped popcorn 1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup sugar 1/3 cup water 1 tablespoon vinegar 1 tablespoon butter or margarine 1/4 teaspoon baking soda Makes 6 1. Place popcorn in a large bowl and set aside. 2. In a heavy saucepan, combine molasses, sugar, water, vinegar and butter. 3. Cook, without stirring, over medium heat until the mixture reaches 235 degrees F on a candy thermometer (soft-ball stage). Add baking soda and stir well. 4. Remove from heat and immediately pour over popcorn, stirring gently with a wooden spoon until well coated. 5. When cool enough to handle, quickly shape into 3-in. balls, dipping hands in cool water to prevent the syrup from sticking. 6. When completely cooled, wrap in plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon. Artwork 2010 Patrick Lose Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake INGREDIENTS 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 pinch ground cloves 1 pinch ground nutmeg 1/2 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed Makes 8 servings. 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. 2. In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Blend in eggs one at a time. Remove 1 cup of batter and spread into bottom of crust; set aside. 3. Add pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the remaining batter and stir gently until well blended. Carefully spread over the batter in the crust. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until center is almost set. Allow to cool, then refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. 5.
