Access copies on 18 rolls of microfilm) Language: Captions on photographs are in English. Preferred Citation: [Specific item; box number; folder number; Leonard D. and Marie H. Rehkop Collection of Algert T. Peterson Glass Plate Negatives (C3888); The State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center-Columbia [after first mention may be abbreviated to SHSMO-Columbia]. Donor Information: Marie H. C3888 Rehkop/Peterson Photographs Page 2 Custodial History: Following the sale of his studio in 1949, Leonard D. Rehkop and his wife, Marie, cared for the collection. Sometime after Leonard s death in 1959, Marie gave the negatives to the Lafayette County Historical Society. The collection was later returned to her. She also loaned some negatives for use in Higginsville s Centennial book. In 1986, she donated the collection to the joint collection The State Historical Society of Missouri and the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection at the University of Missouri. Other Finding Aid: An item-level subject index is available at http://bit.ly/c3888index Processed by: Kathleen McIntyre Conway, March 31, 1994. Finding aid revised by Anne Cox on May 22, 2018. Historical Note: Algert T. Peterson was born in Yazoo, Mississippi, in 1880. He purchased a photography studio in Higginsville in January 1909, and at some point opened a branch studio in Concordia. In 1927 he sold his studio, including his equipment and negatives, to Leonard D. Rehkop and moved to Columbia, Missouri. Rehkop continued to operate the studio until 1949, when it was sold to James Russell Santmyer. Creators: Peterson, Algert T., 1880-1959 Rehkop, Leonard D., 1893-1959 Arrangement: The collection is arranged by format and size. Each negative has been assigned an identifier (ID No.) consisting of a letter which indicates the size of the negative (A=14x17, B=10x12, C=8x10, D=6x8, E=5x8 and 5x7, and F=3x5) and a number, which indicates a particular negative's location among negatives of the same size (e.g. B0203 is the 203rd negative of the 10x12 negatives). The number is located on the lower right-hand corner of each negative. Ninety-five film negatives and five photographs that have no negatives are indicated by the letter "G". Scope and Content Note: The Rehkop/Peterson Collection consists of negatives arranged by size and dating from the 1860s to the 1930s. The majority of the negatives dates from the 1900s and 1910s and has been dated by using the numbering system that appeared on the envelopes that originally housed the negatives. Those negatives that were not included in Peterson's numbering system have been tentatively dated by the processor. Also included in the collection are prints of fifty-eight of the negatives and brief descriptions of some of the negatives, written by Mrs. Rehkop. The negatives appear as positive images on the microfilm. The photographer often used a blue toner on the negatives to diminish shadows. This toner appears as a white hazy area on the microfilm copy of the negatives.

C3888 Rehkop/Peterson Photographs Page 3 The pre-1909 negatives were taken by earlier photographers in Higginsville, two of whom were R.A. Wells and ------ Peters. Post-1927 negatives were taken by Leonard D. Rehkop. The vast majority of the negatives are studio portraits of individuals, families, and groups; most of these portraits are identified. Images of Higginsville and Concordia, Missouri include buildings, such as churches, the Confederate Soldiers Home, and Higginsville Milling Company. Also pictured are civic groups, local sports teams, and community events, such as the Concordia Street Fair.
