Baby Quilt 42 by 42 Block Size 11 (11.5 unfinished) - 9 blocks required Fabric Requirements: (9) 2.5 by width of fabric (WOF) scrappy strips for flowers and border. (2) 1.5 by WOF strip of gold, red, orange or a darker yellow for flower center. (2) 3.5 by WOF strips of green for leaves. (1) 2.5 by WOF strip of a solid colored accent fabric for the corners of the border and the cornerstones. 2 yards background fabric. ½ yard binding fabric. Cutting Directions: There are lots of little pieces. Piecing will go much easier if you organize while you cut. Label 6 baggies A thru F (9) 2.5 strips of scrappy fabric cut into 2.5 squares. Each strip should yield 16-17 squares. (12) squares of each fabric will be used for the tulips and the remainder will be used in the outer border. Put the (12) squares in Baggie B. Put the remainder (4 or 5) in Baggie F. (2) 1.5 strips of fabric for the tulip center cut into (36) 1.5 squares. Baggie A. (2) 3.5 strips of green fabric cut into (36) 3.5 by 2 rectangles for the leaves. Baggie C. (1) 2.5 strip solid colored accent fabric. Cut (4) 2.5 squares corners of the outer border. Baggie F. Cut (4) 2 squares for the sashing. Baggie E. Cut (4) 1.5 squares for the inner border. Baggie E. Cutting Directions for Background Fabric: (7) 2.5 by width of fabric (WOF) cut into (112) 2.5 squares. Draw a diagonal line on the backside of (72) squares. Put the (72) in Baggie B. Reserve the rest (40) for the outer border Baggie F. (1) 11.5 by WOF. Cut into 2 by 11.5 rectangles. (2) 2 by WOF. Cut into 2 squares for the leaves. Baggie C. You need a total of (72) 2 squares background fabric. Draw a diagonal line on the backside of each square. (2) 4.5 by WOF. Cut (36) 2 by 4.5 rectangles. Baggie D. (2) 3 by WOF. Cut (36) 2 by 3 rectangles. Baggie D. (2) 1.5 by WOF. Cut (36) 1.5 squares. Baggie A. (2) 2.5 by WOF. Cut (36) 2.5 by 1.5 rectangles. Baggie A. Making (9) Tulip Blocks: Finished 11 (unfinished 11.5 ) 1. Baggie A. Tulip Center. Sew the squares together first. Press to the dark. Sew the rectangle to the squares. Press to the rectangle. Unit measures 2.5 square. Make (36) units. Cindy Carter 2008 Scrappy Spring Tulips Baby Quilt 5
2. Baggie B. Tulips. Making your HSTs. Pair (8) colored 2.5 squares of each fabric with a background fabric 2.5 square with a line drawn diagonally on the back side. Place squares right sides together. Sew on the diagonal line. Trim to ¼ on one side of the diagonal line. Press to the dark. Make (4) in each color combination for a total of (36). 3. Assemble the tulips. All pieces and units from Baggies A and B. You will have (4) units in each color combination for a total of (36). Each unit measures 4.5 square. 4. Baggie C. Leaves. 2 squares background fabric and 2 by 3.5 green rectangles. Sew one of the squares on the diagonal line to the TOP RIGHT corner of the green rectangle. Trim ¼ from seam line. Sew one of the squares on the diagonal line to the BOTTOM LEFT corner of the green triangle. Trim ¼ from the seam line. Press towards the triangle. You will have (36) 2 by 3.5 leaf units. 5. Baggie D Assembling the rest of your block. Press to the rectangles on both units. Sew the units together and press to the tulip. Sew tulips together. Nest seams together in the center. Press. 5. Baggie E Sashing and Inner Border Make three tulip rows. Join tulips with 11.5 by 2 sashing strips. Press to the sashing strips. Make two horizonal sashing rows. Join 11.5 by 2 sashing strips with 2 cornerstones. Press to the sashing strips. Sew all rows together according to the diagram above. Press to the sashing strips. Sew 1.5 by 35.5 side borders to the quilt. Press to the border. Sew 1.5 squares to the top and bottom inside borders. Press to the borders. Sew borders to the top and bottom of the quilt. 6. Baggie F Outer Border. Side Outer Borders. Sew (2). Alternate tulip and background squares. You need (19) squares in each row. Make sure each of the end squares is in the background fabric. Sew side borders to your quilt. Press to the insdie border. Top and Bottom Outer Borders. Sew (2). Alternate tulip and background squares. You need (21) squares in each row. Make sure each of the end squares is in the same fabric as the corners of the inner border. Sew top and bottom borders to your quilt. Press to the inside border.
